My dad carried a Muskrat knife (Cammilus?) His only pocket knife. Used all week at work, then on weekends we fished and pheasant hunt or rabbitt, then ice fishing. When processing what ever, when blade dragged, he opened other side and continued not needing change his grip. He was a no nonsense guy. No pocket clutter, his knife, A Zippo and cigarettes. When I was 11, I bought a fillet once from a lure mtg and showed him how to use on the bass we caught, then the Muskrat no longer cleaned fish. That was almost 50 years ago! A good design for a simple man.

Nice video! I just picked up my first muskrat a couple of months ago. I like it because it is a slim pocket carry and having the same blade shape doesn’t really bother me as a lot of time on a multi bladed knife I only use the main blade. On a muskrat you don’t have that issue. Really nice knife, thanks for sharing it!

The Muskrat knife really works well for fine detailed skinning work on pelts. They are a smaller version of a Moose pattern. The first ones used a single back spring and the one you have is an improved muskrat that uses two back springs. Moose patterns often have one clip blade and one spear point blade and have 4”handles. Most use two back springs. The idea of opposing end blades makes a thinner two blade knife than a jack knife with both blades that open from one end. It also adds strength to the construction having only one blade in each set of bolsters.🎁🎄😊

Well said Gizmo. I'd wondered why there was an Old Timer Muskrat that has "Improved Muskrat" etched on the blade. Now I know! Thanks for stopping in.

I don’t have any regular muskrats, just the dog bone jack and carnivore jack. Don’t have any horn handles, either. I read they were kinda brittle. If that long, skinny blade was perfect for doing my job, like skinning muskrats, lol., I’d be happy to have two. I like a fat spear point best, though. Thanks for showing your muskrat!

Cool knife, it reminds me of the Carnivore RR. I like these Black Horn RR’s I will be hunting for them in the new year. The small Anvil you have there is just what I need, I’m using a Lump Hammer as an Anvil and it’s ok but not ideal. Great Show and tell 🎅🏻👍.

Thanks for the kind words Toad. I use that little anvil for tightening up older knives with blade play. The carnivore jack is essentially a muskrat so you're not wrong. Be well mate.

@@ThriftyKaniffy Woodcraft and Camping, written in 1884 by George Washington Sears (Nessmuk). Is one of the first guides to lightweight backpacking. Would you believe the knife cost $11.95 when it first came out. Skin all night, then strop it at the end of the night and you're ready for the next day. Either you love it or you don't. I like the frame but I also am not crazy about the matching blades, either. Yep, the older boxes were "you can collect them if you want to but they're really cheap!"
@ThriftyKaniffy3 жыл бұрын
I'll take the old yellow boxes if the quality is what these older ones were. I don't need the new bulky ones anyway, space wasters. We are in agreement with the Muskrat, had to own one though.

If you like that two blades serpentine shape but don’t care for two of the same blades, you can find jack knives with the same serpentine handles that generally come with a clip and a pen instead of two clips. Have one in my rotation and really like it.
