I have had all these tools for sometime and think they are brilliant and excellent value for money. The small shovels are great for emptying out bulk bags like you had in your recent patio videos. They also double up as great spades for a day at the beach! The picks are really good and come in handy no end of times in the garden, but I find they really excel when it comes to digging out roots and around tree roots where you often need a small pick to get in between the roots etc before bringing in the bigger tools. They are also great for clear out around stuff in the garden. I use them much more than I thought I would. The one slight issue is as you raised, the heads coming loose but a quick whack with the lump hammer sets them again for a good while. Your idea of using a bit of glue is a good one but I am not sure how long that would hold up for when they are used in anger but worth a go. The picks were finished a bit rough around the edges but after the first use it wasn't an issue as they had got pretty dirty and marked from use. For the money they really are good. Roughneck is a brand I have used for some time, their post hole diggers are really well made and have stood up to the test of time.

It's really good kit Des. I got mine in boxing day 2009 when a deep freezing night had burst the metal mains water pipe that supplied my house and my neighbours house. Seeing call out charge for plumber would be sky high we went down to Screwfix who were open and got 50m mdpe pipe and fittings and saw these which I think were new out that year. Seeing we needed to dig 2 trenches one 22m and another 17m at a right angle to it, in hard frozen clay soil with roots and stones, whilst missing the electric, gas, water and drain pipes all in the same area. They worked a treat and stood up to the abuse dished out. They are real value and one of the best buys I ever made. My tools would fill a B&Q Depot, I daren't think of the cost over the last 40 years 😬😭. They do a great tool that pries up boards like floorboards and pallet strips. That's great both the long handled and the smaller one I got have been great when you need to get something stripped out or demolished in a hurry. Roughneck are always coming out with great new tools. Enjoy digging stuff up, now you've got them you'll have to be using them.

I brayed the frozen ground with all of those and the pick and mattock especially took a beating for 3 days and the heads never moved. I would probably use a couple of wooden wedges, more like slivers really on the size of the heads, if you feel it's necessary. Don't screw into the handle, I think that would weaken it by creating a point of failure, 2 if you put a screw in both sides. I'd wait until you have a problem before doing anything rather than potentially damaging them.

I just bought the two mattocks for doing a dug out shelter sometime soon, I imagined them to be a little larger, can anyone recommend 1 that's somewhere between the size of these and a full size pick.
