One of the best explanations as far as side by side pics of round vs square. And under 1:1/2 minutes.

*THE QUESTION IS:* Say you've saved 2 seconds cutting a log with square ground. Say you've cut 10, or 20, or 50, or 100 cuts in large 20" logs and saved yourself *200 seconds* (3 mins and 20 seconds). *BUT,* do you have to stop more often with square ground to sharpen the chain - spending 30 minutes *(1800 seconds)* to sharpen that chain?

This is bucking, it's often way better at felling (horizontal cuts). You don't sharpen any chain out in the field, period, that's money lost, you bring 3-4 spares. Sharpen at the end of the day back at camp/home.

That’s why you buy 10 chains then you don’t have to worry about it. When you have time you can sharpen all of them. You just change your chain out about every 2 tanks of gas.

@@austinryder7265 _'Where'_ or _'when'_ you sharpen your chains has nothing to do with how much extra time it takes. It still takes you an extra 10 hours by the end of the month to sharpen your chains - and it makes no difference whether you spend 30 extra minutes every other day in the field sharpening one chain at a time, or whether you spend an extra 10 hours sharpening 20 chains all at once. It's *still 10 hours* either way. I'm not saying that you *_do_* have to stop to sharpen more often with a square ground chain - hence why my comment started off with *"THE QUESTION IS..."*. I'm just laying out the math.

@@gatsbylight4766 First of all, the time you spend in a workshop, in a comfortable position, warm and dry, while sharpening your chains is not equivalent to the time spent hunched over, on a steep hill, soaking wet, with wasps chasing you and limbs falling nearby. Secondly, a chisel chain that is square ground is effectively sharpened into a chisel profile at each cutting edge. A chisel chain that is round filed is effectively hollow ground, and will get dull faster. Square ground chain cuts faster and stays sharp longer than round filed chisel chain. Semi-chisel chain may have similar duration of sharpness to square ground chisel chain, but it does not allow for cleaning up face cuts, adjusting aim, etc.

More time to maintain square cut chain. Chisel cut edges are more delicate-vulnerable to dirt and grit.

Hey Zsolt ..forgive me here but the profile you have as a "square ground " doesn't really look like a square ground to me. I could be wrong but the profile isn't quite right. My chain / files and the simington have a line up to the working corner ? Maybe this is a blunt chain. cuts well though.

About a 2 sec. advantage w/ square cut. Is it really that big a deal.....?

not really

that's a 20% speed difference. 8 hours of cutting instead of 10 hours

And soooon much smoother, resulting in less fatigue on hands and arms. Also you can dog in on face cuts harder without grabbing and chatter. Generally just better all around. But it takes a little more skill to file and the grinder is a lot more $$$.

@@michpatriot9097 people don't understand not only how much faster it is but how smooth it cuts but most important how much longer it stays sharp! Chains last longer!!
