Story 9’s writer here. Thanks so much for the feedback! You managed to articulate a problem I’ve been struggling to pinpoint in this first page for a while now, and it sparked the idea for a much better, less info dumpy alternative for some key exposition! As for the prosey first person, that was actually intentional (although I definitely overdid it here). A major part of the POV character is that he relies on folk stories as a form of escapism. I wanted to play around with style and make his voice feel ‘storybook-like’ at times because it’s a big part of how he processes things, especially the conflict between his more paranoid/imaginative side and his more grounded/logical side.

Fantastic to hear that it helped :D I know that these first page reads can sometimes seem brutal, but it helped me enormously when I submitted my first page to a convention when I was just starting this journey.

Congrats on your work so far! A 3rd person pov would let you occasionally dip into the POV's internal thoughts, and those could always be highly stylized, as you described, to be strangely antique or brothers grimm or william morris even. Then your writing enjoys three depths: the actual 3rd person prose, the POV's dialogue, and then last, their private fairy-tale themed inner monologue.

The premise of that last story sounded really interesting and I started to get hooked.

Interesting the first story I think was a re write of the edit vide you made on 5/30. You commented that you didn't understand the MCs response/tone to the death and that there was too much showing. It seems the author shortened it alot to be direct about the death and added the details about items poking her on the bed you suggested.

I agree, it's much more intense and to the point. But grammar, grammar, grammar.

If there's a preface or prologue, would a literary agent consider that the first page? or from chapter 1?
@releasingyourinnerdragon
@releasingyourinnerdragon 6 ай бұрын
I think they would likely consider the prologue the first page, but a preface (if it's not part the story) probably isn't page 1.

Tried to send an email to the address you gave near the beginning of the video, hoping to send you a first page. Unfortunately the email bounced. Fortunately, however, I spotted a redundant sentence right after sending. I have since fixed it. So I have already benefitted from you!😂

@@releasingyourinnerdragon ok, seems the reason it bounced is gmail's security filter blocking mail from my author address. I've sent it from my musician Gmail account instead (this account), so with any luck you'll find it easily.
