Are the logs concreted into the ground? Here we have termites and everything thats wood cannot touch the ground.

The logs had about 6 inches of gravel under them and the ground there is very sandy and drains well. But filling around the log with road base works better than concrete for drainage, assuming it's not poorly draining soil. We dug down about 42", put in gravel and then 3' of post.

Why do some people build with round timbers and other split the wood to remove pith? Trying to learn and have a bunch of round wood that people are telling me I need to split before it gets cracked and ruined? Or is there a way to store rounds so this doesn’t happen?
@EssentialMountainHomesteading10 ай бұрын
All wood is going to check / split as it dries out. The best thing to do is know what you are going to build and then cut and prep your wood for your project. It may mean you have to cut your lumber over size and let it dry and then come back and recut it to the dementions you need for the project.
@AnxiousCowboy10 ай бұрын
@@EssentialMountainHomesteading so am I understanding correctly the checking is fine if you’re keeping it as round wood and using as such… but not so much if you are storing the round wood stock to eventually be cut into boards?
@EssentialMountainHomesteading10 ай бұрын
I think checking is fine in all wood and I think cutting your round trees into boards is a good way to help it dry sooner.

Is eye protection available? Why run the digger faster then an idle to lift a log? Noisy and wastes fuel it seems.

Look forward to seeing your videos, Josh. Would appreciate a little info on what we’re about to see. Is this your property? Is that the owner? Are we watching you guys build a barn? Are these your employees? Are you guys working in Utah or Idaho?

The rest of us were there to learn how to work with roundwood, we were repairing a berm shed, essentially a lean-to with a waterproof roof and earth on the back so it's just a hill from the road. So he was teaching total novices the ropes and we were learning as we worked.

Loved the video, what type of chain saw are you using?
Man that’s cool. We need more info. Can’t let the wife see this. I would be working on this until I die.

I think this is older footage. I would have to guess Montana. As for some of the work crew standing around, they could be volunteer type labor. Still good video. Thank you Josh.

Yeah it was a training course in Montana, the rest of us had not done this before so we're learning it for the first time. It took place in October 2018.

I was one of the guys, we were all there learning roundwood timber framing, and we were repairing and rebuilding a berm shed, sort of a lean-to that had earth on the back side so you just see a hill from the road.
