Over 50 years ago (Dec 72) I watched Yes play this live at the Rainbow Theatre, an old converted cinema in North London. The keyboardist Rick Wakeman, a musical prodigy and virtuoso who had studied at the Royal College of Music, had at least 6 keyboards that I can recall, the drummer and bassist, Bill Bruford and Chris Squire respectively, were considered the best in the business, the lead guitarist, Steve Howe, was acclaimed as by far the best guitarist in England, surpassing Clapton, Beck, Page, etc. If you have a vague notion these guys were in some way talented, you'd be right, and, by the way, I think you might need better headphones. This track is considered to be one of the greatest, and totally unsurpassed, prog-rock tracks of all time

Another song where I love Bill is _Yours is No Disgrace_ Someone mentioned _Heart of the Sunrise_ which is great, too. It's one of the few songs on which he has a writing credit... he didn't think he deserved it, but Jon Anderson insisted because of his excellent input. Fun fact: The tuned percussion @ ~5:30 is, according to Bill Bruford, milk bottles filled with different amounts of water (like the classic science project :-) Olde joke: Cop: Do you realize how fast you were going? Yes fan: _Roundabout_ Cop: As you were.

I'm surpprised being a drummer, that you wouldn't be aware of the Bill Bruford, the drummer , here, who was with Yes through their 1st 5 albums before going on to King Crimson, UK, and Genesis , besides doing his jazz fusion group simply named Bruford. What makes him top of my list of my list is how he applies his craft to a song and the"pop" of his snare.

People rode tilt-a-whirls to this song at Myrtle Beach. They did NOT dance to it. It was usually played under the influence of one's favorite distraction. Yes are the prototypical progressive rock band. There was a short single version of this on the radio, that led to millions of albums sold. ALL Yes Albums from 1970 to 1977 are worth hearing in their entirety. Close to the Edge (song AND album) is their most famous masterpiece. This music is over 50 years old. I was a sophomore in high school when this dropped. I still think these guys are the best set of musicians from that era of the early '70s. Glad you liked it!

A Roundabout is what they call those islands in the middle of the intersection that everyone needs to go around. They had just been introduced in Great Britain a few years before. The song came about when the band was touring in 1971, traveling between Aberdeen and Glasgow in Scotland. Along the way they encountered tons of roundabouts (according to Anderson, "maybe 40 or so").
@cazgerald9471 Жыл бұрын
Yes had many line-up changes over the years. This line-up was my favorite producing the albums "Fragile" (which includes "Roundabout") and "Close to the Edge". Their most recent albums "The Quest" (2021) and "Mirror to the Sky" (2023) do not have any original members. Bassist Chris Squire (1948 - 2015) was the only member on every Yes album through "Heaven & Earth" (2014). However, the exact line-up on this song, except for Chris Squire, formed a band in the 1980s called Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe (ABWH). The two bands got together for the 1991 Yes album "Union" "Fragile" & "Close to the Edge" Jon Anderson - lead and backing vocals Steve Howe - electric and acoustic guitars, backing vocals Chris Squire - bass guitars, backing vocals Rick Wakeman - Keyboards (Hammond organ, grand piano, RMI 368 Electra-Piano and Harpsichord, Mellotron, Minimoog) Bill Bruford - drums, percussion

The percussionist/drummer here is Bill Bruford, who is a legend when it comes to prog drummers. At the height of Yes' popularity, Bill decided to leave Yes and join King Crimson, another prog powerhouse, and played with KC for several years until they went into "hibernation." Later on, he founded the band UK, which featured John Wetton (also from KC) on bass/vocals, Eddie Jobson on keys/violin, and the incompatible Alan Holdsworth on guitar. After a single album, Bill and Alan left to found Bruford (UK continued, with Buford being replaced by Terry Bozzio,) which was more a prog/jazz/fusion band, adding Jeff Berlin on bass. There are several videos on KZbin and several amazing albums available from this time period. When Robert Fripp reformed King Crimson in the 1980s, he invited Bill back, and they recorded several albums, while KC experimented with different lineups, including 2 drummers. (the final KC lineup actually includes 3 drummers!) Eventually, Bill left KC and formed another jazz band, "Earthworks" where he recorded several albums. This is really a short history of Bill Bruford, with a lot of info left out, and is probably wildly inaccurate.. Bill announced his retirement from performing, and is now a writer and educator.

Yes, Yes came out in the late `60's from the ashes of several psych bands. Steve Howe came from the band, Tomorrow and then a band called, Bodast. Chris Squire came from The Syn, I think Tony Banks was also in The Syn. Jon Anderson started tying to put together a band called, Mable Greer's Toy shop until Bill Bruford came along on drums and sad he's not gonna be part of a band with that name so, they changed it to, Yes. I'm not sure where Rick Wakeman came from. The ride you're talking about is a merry-go-round. A roundabout is a huge circle on the British roads that they use so you can just keep driving and not have to stop at traffic lights and still make your turns, if you want to, instead of stopping at intersections.

"memories that are not yours..." Well actually, you are right. The latest science on the matter is exciting. They have actually "implanted" memories into DNA, and have "recovered" those memories. DNA can hold thousands of times more memory than DVD storage. Memories can be passed from generation to generation through DNA, explaining "past lives" types of memories. This is why having children is so important because you are actually physically passing down memories from your ancestors to your own children. It's what keeps you alive when you hear something hiding in the bushes or hiding in the dark. It's not something you have to "learn" because it's "built in". Don't feel strange when you seem to have memories from events in the past. One of your family members might have been there. This is actual science.

Looks like you've done several by Genesis (with Phil Collins on drums, of course) - but few know about Phil's excursion into fusion! Check out Brand X - "Nuclear Burn" is a great song to show off the kind of chops that Genesis never really used! Phil had to leave Brand X after a fairly short time because of prior commitments with Genesis, but the album version has Phil, and a few live videos have him with the band, as well. As to more Yes - definitely check out songs from several eras, as Yes has changed notably over the decades. This was from the early 70s, and had Bill Bruford on drums. Bruford left a few years later and was (quite ably) replaced by Alan White, who remained with the band until his death just last year. Check out the album "Relayer", and for drumming specifically, either "The Gates of Delirium" (a very long - almost 22 minutes - impression of Tolstoy's "War and Peace") or "Sound Chaser" (a bit shorter, but still pretty long at 9:25). For the 80s, check out "Changes" from the album "90125" - particularly the intro in the "what the heck is that" time signature 😀 - "Homeworld" is a great song from the somewhat sparse 90s output of the band, and the "Fly Form Here Suite" on the album "Fly From Here" is an excellent 2011 release.
