Oh I love you guys - you react to music with as much enthusiasm as kids reacting to new toys at Christmas. Please listen to more Yes, especially 70s Yes! But to answer your question YES there are other bands from the 70s that arguably have an even cleaner and deeper sound. If I could suggest only one song for you to react to, it would be "Firth of Fifth" by Genesis. I would crack out my best champagne for that video :)

1971, I was 12. Not only what you're saying but this song was being played on mainstream radio. The year before, Black Sabbath had come out with Paranoid and it was being played on mainstream radio. We've been listening to progressive and metal music for 50 years. We are quite musically advanced. lol

You guys are GREAT! Here's some history. YES may have been influenced by "In the Court of the Crimson King", released on 10 October 1969 by King Crimson. I am also an English-born musician (born in the 50's). King Crimson was certainly one of the originators of this 'progressive' rock music that integrated many musical styles. Greg Lake (from King Crimson) went on to form Emerson, Lake & Palmer and also played with Gary Moore, Asia, and Ringo Starr. According to Wikipedia "In 1969, the original King Crimson influenced and altered the approach of contemporaries such as Yes and Genesis. King Crimson has consistently drawn inspiration from a wide variety of music over the years, keeping their work fresh by incorporating elements of Classical music, jazz, folk, heavy metal, gamelan, industrial, Electronic, experimental music, and new wave." Robert Fripp, the guitarist and co-songwriter in King Crimson, worked as a session musician and collaborator, notably with David Bowie, Blondie, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel, Daryl Hall, and Talking Heads.

I feel you BUT, would reverse what you wrote. We musicians were SPOILED by the sophisticated AUDIENCES that WANTED this music in the 70's, those who went to the shows and bought the merch. Don't forget the market shapes and determines what is seen and heard in the music business.

@@OmarTorrez - SOOO true... We busted our balls to even get noticed back then. We had to sell our shitty cars to cover the cost of recording time. The talent pool and the expectations were ridiculous. We didn't have the opportunity to spend a day or two in a bedroom producing an album that would be heard by millions (despite its quality) with just Pro-Tools and a click of the mouse (Yeah, a little jealousy there)... An album (in our day) could realistically take years to polish and hone, whereas TODAY you would literally be forgotten and replaced if you were to retreat and take the time to release something of real quality. I'm generalizing, of course, and there are exceptions to the rule, but welcome to the world we're living in where *music* has been replaced by *entertainment.*

They were the originals. Their Progressive Rock contemporaries were King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Genesis. And Yes is filled with amazing musicians and vocals, stunning the world with the song and then others. Their opus is "Close to the Edge", a song that is often considered, in prog rock, the pinnacle of achievement. BUT, you're not ready for that song-instead jump to Heart of the Sunrise or And You & I. Then move on to other pieces.

@@michaeldrennan9932 Go for it. Quite a different sound to the '70's stuff, Peter Banks was the guitarist on the 1st 2 albums Yes & Time and a Word before Steve Howe replaced him on The Yes Album. Quite a few cover versions on them but you can hear where their sound is heading. Personal favourite track - Survival (1st album). Here's an Easter Egg for you. I hear you! I heard this in 1974 and was blown away. Nothing was ever the same. I spent years in a constant search for this experience. The rest of the Yes catalog. Genesis. Anything but going back to normal! Jon Anderson (vocals), Chris Squire (bass and vocal), Bill Bruford (drums, later with King Crimson), Rick Wakeman (keyboards, first recording with the group), Steve Howe (guitar and vocals). All legends!!! Chris, sadly, passed a few years back. Bruford is retired. The rest are alive and still out there! Go and hear them while you can!!!

Yes has had numerous members in their line-up over the decades, but all are very qualified musicians. There are no bad musicians in Yes! Jon Anderson an outstanding vocalist, Steve Howe is just a ridiculous guitarist, Rik Wakeman is a wizard on the keyboards and dresses like one, Chris Squire is an out-of-this-world bass player, and Bill Bruford a insane drummer. The whole band of Yes is off the charts talented and were at the forefront of Progressive Rock, along with Emerson, Lake, & Palmer, King Crimson, Rush and others. Watching Yes play this song live is utterly crazy!!

A classic prog tune, Yes are incredible I have seen Steve Howe the guitarist live several times and he is stunning, and Rick Wakeman the keyboard player, he was just plain weird, but so talented. After a few notes, one of you asked: "Jazz?" Yes, jazz, fusion, rock - these guys were classically trained and made their own music. I saw them two years ago and for several years they had two bands, one touring Europe; one in the States, each with about half the band's original musicians and then other musicians in each of the bands. They had that kind of excellence. Thier followers who undestand them are eclectic. It takes a deep, deep dive to be willing to follow them and continue to say "Yes." In their shows they improvise on stage. If you were to continue to follow them, you would have to let go of everything that you think you know and be willing to be trained to appreciate their experimental and evolving musical journey.

1971! Back when creativity and originality were still thriving. You don't see anything like this any more. Not just great songs, but great performances by every band member. I mentioned it in another comment, but you need to watch them playing 'Yours Is No Disgrace' in the studio from 1971. Watching them play things like this live REALLY makes you appreciate their talent. There's a video of them playing 'Roundabout' at a concert in 1973 that is also mind blowing. Hard to believe, but they can sound just as good live.

Chris Squire's bassline is amazing, Rick Wakeman on keyboards is crazy, Jon Anderson's singing is perfect and Steve Howe's acoustic and electric guitar work beautiful. This is my favourite Yes song - and that's saying something.

A lot of times it was Anderson and Squire together singing, Squier's backing vocals were a huge part of the Yes sound.

1971. Steve Howe, the lead guitarist uses a Gibson ES-175, which is a jazz guitar. This was done back when the artists have the freedom to experiment.

This song came out in 1971. Yes. Amazing musicians and songwriters. Truly original with their own style and sound. Many great songs and albums. Ahead of their time. You've got a lot of great music to look forward to if you get into more YES.

Yes is one of the coolest trippiest bands of all time. No-one sounded like Yes. I actually met them in a Sheraton inn restaurant in STL towards the end of the performing career and they looked and acted like a bunch of super chill aging hipsters.

From forgotten Yesterdays. I went to see Yes for the first time in 1974 at Allen Field House in Lawrence, KS. I was the tender age of 17. The acoustics of the place were horrible, but that was soon forgotten as I was swept up into the experience. Truly, it was like seeing a band from another planet. I was already an admirer of Roger Dean, and this was an incredible stage set. I've never seen the like since, and I would love to see it again.
