For those saying, "wow, how honorable he's going to pay him". The guy runs a high stakes underground game. If he didn't pay him, his game is ruined, his reputation is ruined. No one will ever play there again, and teddy wouldn't be allowed to play at any other games. He pays him the 70k he won, people see that he's legit and won't screw someone, even an enemy. So now, he'll make 10x moving forward running his game.

Yeah but the end of Maverick is absurd. Blind, total luck that the A of spades was on top of the deck. He didn't "pull" any card, it was just blind luck. Rounders he outplayed the man with the betting to draw him into fully committing when he didn't have it. Still love Maverick though as it's a really fun time.

Right. Remember Mike wasn’t there to beat Teddy KGB and win his money back; he was there specifically to win enough money by dawn to pay off his debt to Grama (and by extension Teddy KGB himself). As long as Mike is still at the table Teddy wins. Both players know this, which is why Teddy taunts Mike to keep him there, and why he gets so frustrated when Mike plays conservatively - he’s supposed to be betting aggressively into Teddy because he’s on the clock - and why it’s so satisfying that Mike completely turns the tables.

@@JB-rl4ik i mean not really, youd do the same with any straight draw or top pair marginal kicker sort of hand, lot of combos of hands to take that line with, J9 J8 85 54 were all possible combos he could've had. Plus the villain here will probably have at least top pair with some semi connected card like a 9 or 8 that served as a blocker to the nut straight. And the river check was very very strange, misses out on a lot of value by not betting there with the nuts on average, a check there assuming your opponent is a good player is usually a concession of defeat, or that his A8 or A9 now hit top pair and has showdown value.

@@jaymoar3561 Essentially this scene isn't realistic because in the movie, they act as if tells are a physical/biological thing. For example, Teddy KGB busts an Oreo in half whenever he has the winning hand, but somehow does it without consciously realizing he does it. In real life poker no half decent player is giving away the fact that they have a good hand with physical tells. It's easy to avoid doing. It's still my favorite poker movie though, regardless of that bit of unrealistic plot.

Two things about this scene never made sense to me. - First, Mike is already well ahead in chips and has Teddy covered. So even if he lost this hand, he is still playing. But that's Hollywood. - Second, when the flop comes out and Mike calls Teddy's bet, Teddy says 'you're on a draw, Mike.' This line never made sense to me. The flop was 6-7-10 rainbow. So the only hand Mike could have had that would have been a draw was 4-5 for the bottom end of the straight. The only other hand that would have made sense was 8-9 (what he had) but that's not a draw, it's a made hand. It makes no sense that Teddy would have been betting so hard into Mike thinking he was on a draw in that spot. If I were him, I'd have had alarm bells going off like crazy.

One of my favorite characters by this wonderful actor. I've heard people complain that his Russian accent isn't right. They don't get it. It's not Malkovich's accent. It's Teddy's accent. @@aikalabe7719 to my point - why try to chase him away if you think you have the superior hand? The way he played it, he either flopped or rivered top set. His reaction to the 8 9 would indicate he wasn't bluffing so you have to assume that the preflop raise and post flop betting was representing the strength of a set. Under the impression he was ahead, a more strategic bet would have been for about 40% of the pot if he thought Mike had 2 pair or a smaller set. If Mike missed entirely, either a small bet or all in bet would chase him off - that's why i said it didn't make sense to go all in.

What makes sense here? He limped in pre-flop. So could have a low pocket pair or maybe a weak ace… I’m guessing A6. Because if he had a pocket pair of any kind, heads up, he’d already be way ahead and would likely have raised. He limps in with A6 and hits a pair on the flop, two of a kind on the river? If he put Mike on an A high flush draw, he may have thought Mike paired his ace on the river and because of the way he was betting so loosely, would assume Teddy was bluffing, so mike would call and pay him off with only a pair of Aces.

some are missing the reason why teddy pays him, etc. it's not so much about teddy kgb's personal integrity, which is still an element, but more so it's about the integrity of the card house which teddy is running for the russian mob. other players are there. if they see mike get beaten up or killed and most importantly not paid his winnings, then that card room dies. no one will give them action if they don't believe they'll get paid. teddy's bosses would not accept his personal reasons for them losing a revenue source over mike's relatively small winnings or teddy's personal grudge. teddy pays mike because he's not only a professional card player with integrity, but also because he's a professional criminal.

As much as Teddy paid Mike because of the nature of his gambling business, there was also a strong element of respect. Mike trash talks Teddy after the hand, which is almost always a no-go around mobsters.(Citation: Tommy from Goodfellas). This is why Grama initially lunges at Mike, and you can see a bit of shock on Grama's face when Mike trash talks Teddy. Even if Teddy paid up to protect his business reputation, most of the time, Mike's smart-ass remark would call for a tune-up. Teddy's insistence on sticking up for Mike and calling off his lackeys, regardless of whether or not he'd pay him, showed respect for Mike as a poker player. Nobody in the room would have thought anything of Mike getting a backhand for his wise-crack, but Teddy understands that trash talk is part of the game. Mike gambled with his life and didn't crack, and after all, only won back the initial $30 grand he lost to Teddy. (Bought in for 30 grand in the first poker scene, won 10 grand off Teddy with the judge's money, and then won another 20 grand off Teddy for a total of 30---the initial 30 that Mike lost.) At the end of the day, Teddy would've had to pay Mike for business reasons, but you can definitely see that he truly earns the mobsters' respect.

Not quite right on the cash. Total rake was 60k, 15 to Grama, 6 to The Chesterfield, 10 to the professor, 31k total. So he is actually a grand short of the 3 stacks of high society he started with.

KGB certainly can't win if every time he deals, others can see the card on the bottom of the deck and each burn card.

What card was on bottom? A lot of places have a black card to put at the bottom for that reason.

That's illegal in tournies, not in cash. And it's illegal in tournies if you are last to act. If you are first, you can say that you were looking to check-raise.

@Danny O ... flop 6d 7s 10h, turn 2c river As. What am I missing. Board is not paired, flush does not get there. There are no other straight draws. Mikey has the undisputed nuts on the flop, turn and river. Trips aces is the best hand he could be facing. Watch again my friend.
