What does it matter If it is the first hand or the 100th - this is a relatively normal move to make?

@@siramoras It's a poor move, because Matt's character barely has any read on John's besides the fact that Matt's already lost to him before. And by this point in the movie Matt's character borrowed 10k from a friend and if he loses this game the mobsters are gonna take him out back and shoot him.

Lol the biggest of games. Hadn't seen him for like a decade it feels like and just found out this year he's sadly left this world... if they're playing cards up there, hope he saves me a seat. Good randomiser for 50/50 decisions though. Filling in right hand - call, filling in left - fold for instance. I actually thought that was what he was doing. I mean, how is it a tell? Also he did it AFTER the all in, so what good is a tell from the guy who's closing the action?

It's not only a gripping film, it's a film that leaves you with a wonderful feeling inside. Some films keep you interested but leave you feeling dry or in a bad mood. This is good in every sense of the word and all these great actors put in great performances and Norton perhaps the best of them all.

Personally I wouldn't say I had a wonderful feeling inside. Plenty was lost in order for mike to get back to where he started. He lost his girls, his college aspirations and any friend relationships he had are now compromised. Even though he's a great poker player Knish was right in calling his ambitions a pipe dream. Dejection is a more accurate term for my feeling.

"Rounders" was one of the best written, and acted, yet least appreciated of the films of that year. While not an expose or very valid story of underground poker, it was a great simple sroy very well written by David Levien and Brian Koppelman and Damon did a good job, his work was outclassed by Malkovitch and Norton.

@Midnight Movie Man Ah yes, the old "theoretically" it could be done argument. The problem is that it's HARD for people to have patience and focus for 12 hours a day, which is how long a pro plays, 6 days a week. Real life is not like the movies, sometimes you can go for hours with out a good hand. If you start playing with shitty cards, the math will beat you in the end, and over the long run you will be a loser. Don't tell you could do it, go out and do it, and then tell me if it's hard or not. I tried playing Pro for six months and poker is a cruel, cruel mistress. But, don't take my word for it, give it a shot.

@@RJwarriorpoet I went out and did it, and I agree that it depends on the bankroll. For his argument's sake, $10 per hour is easy with a higher bankroll but yes, atrociously difficult in terms of time if I played $0.50 - $1 games. My only gripe is that the math doesn't beat you in the long run. I played Texas Hold'em, and because everybody has the same chances, then in the long run, barring folds, you'll get just as many shitty cards as you do good cards. I personally stopped playing because a game stops being a game for me when it becomes work. That, and I'd rather be self-employed in a less risky business these days.
@RJwarriorpoet
@RJwarriorpoet 2 жыл бұрын
@@Impact009 I'm sorry but your comment is factually wrong. Not all cards have the same value and statistically speaking, the amount of hands that will win money is far smaller than the amount that will lose money. I don't really think you played long enough to make an accurate assessment and probably just dabbled. As for your comment about it feeling like a job, that's what it means to be a professional poker player, it's your profession aka job.

This movie inspired me to play "semi-professionally" too. I'll tell you the truth after 2 months of trying to play semi pro with a $10k roll at the 1/2 nl, the bottom line was: Its a waste of time. Why you may ask? Well, imagine sitting for 8+ hours straight: -only to be up $20 bucks -fighting to break even after being stuck for $800+ at a 1/2 table -going against a player who is basically, just lucky for that night. Any card they need? They hit.. 😞 -playing against the same "regs" day in and day out. -actually needing the money to make ends meet.. Save yourself sometime and find an occupation that is high paying and meaningul to you. Be a player at the table who doesnt need the money to make ends meet. Rather be a player who is just there for entertainment and if you should win, the winnings wont change your life and if you lose, its not the end of the world. The game will always be there 2,5,10,etc years from now.. Would you rather be an older "accomplished" person from your perspecrive or just a person who has been sitting in the same card room(s) for 20+ years? 🤔🤨

I’ve always hated pocket pairs; your draws are far too limited. This is probably the best move you can make in the opening position in a head to head game: bet heavy and pray your opponent isn’t crazy enough to call and play off of a draw.

@@smalltowndowntown9199 I said I hated them. I never said I didn’t play them. They are a great hand in a heads up game, but they lose value as the player count increases. Most of that revolves around the fact a pocket pair has very few draws. In a heads up game, it’s highly unlikely the other player will be holding your draws. That possibility increases with each player at the table. Heads up?Play them out a bit. A full table? Try to take the pot pre-flop. You really don’t want to chance someone getting cards on the flop.

@@dirgeofdementia not all pocket pairs are created equal. J10s vs 22, for example, J10 is a very slight favorite. J10o vs 22 is about even money. J10s vs any overpair is a MASSIVE dog. Pocket pairs are already made hands, draw heavy hands are not. If given the choice between QQ or J10, you should be taking QQ every single time. And in this clip, it’s KK which is even more dominant!

@@smalltowndowntown9199 I know they’re not. I’m just saying regardless of what pair it is, they can tend to get you in trouble when playing at a full table. Pocket pairs only hold up in the early game if you’re betting aggressively because that pair is about the highest hand you can hope for unless you get insanely lucky and catch one or both of your matching cards in the community.

@@smalltowndowntown9199 I'd rather KQss than 10 10 though for example. For 1 there is inherently going to be over cards on the board and you also cant improve unless you hit a 10 or theres a 4 liner. This movie along with Robert Varkonyi's main event win of the 2002 WSOP turned me into a poker player and for a short period of time a professional. I burned myself out on the grind of being a pro and while I no longer play, I did walk away from the game a winner. The game was both Dark, because I thought of nothing but poker, even when I wasn't playing and lost some friends over it, and pleasantly memorable from the good times and new friends I made.

Teddy KGB's tell revolves around how he breaks and eats an Oreo cookie: - Strong Hand: When KGB has a strong hand, he snaps the cookie in half by holding it to his ear, as if listening for something. -Bluffing: If he's bluffing, he breaks the cookie cleanly in half and eats it without hesitation. -Folding: If he has a weak hand, he crumbles the cookie messily and doesn't eat it.
