"Maria" is a song from the Broadway musical West Side Story, sung by the lead character Tony. The music was written by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. The song was published in 1956.
Sarah's accompanied by Kirk Stuart (piano), Charles "Buster" Williams (bass), and Georges Hughes (drums). Recorded in Sweden, 1964. (Mercury Records)
"Maria" is sung by the male lead Tony when he learns the name of the girl he's fallen in love with is "Maria". The name "Maria" is spoken or sung in the song 27 times. It begins in B major and then modulates to E-flat major.
The song is widely known for its use of the melodic interval of a tritone in the main theme. The song is an example of the use of lydian mode, which is the same as the major scale but with a raised 4th, giving the tritone characteristic of this piece.
The most beautiful sound I ever heard
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria
All the beautiful songs of the world in a single word
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria
Maria
I just met a girl named Maria
Suddenly that name
Will never ever be the same
Maria
I just kissed a girl named Maria
And suddenly I've found
How wonderful a sound
Can be
Maria
Say it loud and there's music playing
Say it soft and it's almost like praying
Maria
I'll never stop saying Maria
Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria
Maria, Maria
Maria
Say it loud and there's music playing
Say it soft and it's almost like praying
Maria
I'll never stop saying Maria
The most beautiful sound I've ever heard
Maria

What was so astonishing about Sarah Vaughan (and perfectly illustrated here), is the sum total of her virtuosity. She could put a note anywhere and never missed, had phrasing and control beyond compare. Then there is her emotional and intellectual understanding of what she was singing- and she sang everything. And finally there is this: having all those tools, her singing never became jaded, or obtuse, or stilted- the musicality always came thru. For me, that last piece is what made Sarah Vaughan shine longer, brighter, firmer than the one, may two others always put next to her. They may have deserved, their place with her, but she was first among equals.

She was never first. Sarah had a wonderful voice and a profound musicality, but she never made it to the status of Ella or Billie, and for understandable reasons. One jazz lover made the comment that although she appreciated Sarah for her tremendous talents, she didn't "feel" her. I think that is much of what always kept her from getting to the top. She didn't translate to the masses in the poignant, visceral way of Billie or bring people into her singing in the infectious and joyful way of Ella.

@@direfranchement The only thing that means is that Vaughan did not win at the game. The critic game, the music BTS gsme, the mass market game, or whatever other games were being played. Anything beyond acknowledging her mastery and her gifts is rationalization of the often unfair games. Alas, it is what it is. Two voices stop me in me tracks and neither, imo, got the wider recognition they deserved though they were both very successful. Sarah Vaughan was the first of these for me.

That little sashay movement at the beginning of the chorus-- a good example of Sarah's changing personae to suit the words, mood, character. "Maria" begins with the epiphany-- or spell-binding effect of-- "the most beautiful sound you've ever heard." Six Maria's (twice), then she settles into the real Maria, relating the pedestrian details of the recent past that led up to the opening revelation. Sarah's parents thought their daughter was going to her courses, studying and singing only religious and classical music.. Sarah was blest with the voice not of one lifetime but, as Gary Giddins' maintains, of 2-3 lifetimes. She was getting all the education she would need in the night life and jazz clubs of Newark.

Sarah Vaughan was quite simply the greatest voice of the 20th Century. This is just another example. She exploited her prodigious range to execute extraordinarily unique interpretations of the American Song Book. She, Ella Fitzgerald and Frank Sinatra were the trifecta of American popular music. I know exactly what you mean. The last couple of days, I’ve been watching a lot of Sarah and there is something that feels almost death defying in her performances. She knows she can do it, but I get a feeling of apprehension - “Oh no! What’s she going to try now?” And then sticks the perfect landing. Also, she is great fun to watch where a lot of singers are are more about just listening. I saw Ella live twice, but I do wish I’d seen a live performance from The Divine One.

This year in May 2017 the Chicago Symphony ?? had a concert dedicated just to Sarah. There is also a female jazz vocal contest in NY named after her. Tony Bennet says she had the best non opera voice last century. Wow!! No weakness in any octave she sings. See also video of Misty in the same concert as Maria - all live and solo with no backup singers, just a regular but great small band. Diction, pitch, tone, phrasing, interpretation, innovation, entertainment - all 10s. See also Tenderly, Summertime, Somewhere Over the Rainbow but there are too many other great performances to list here. Her Gershwin double album is great and demonstrates her versatility - considerable sexy singing and also refinement. Oh, and she could play piano very well too. When she joined a professional band at 18 the band had nothing to teach her - she was already the consummate professional.

It is difficult to believe that a Human being is given the gift of sound to such level of sublime perfection as Miss Vaughan was. It is a priviledge and a delight to be born her time to wittness her ART. Very few at her level, or at least close to her's. BRAVA MAestra !!! All that control, and she's singing the song as a observer of someone else's love... Maybe she loved the boy who loves Maria (Maria as a stand-in, another.. who prehaps makes us feel smaller than ourselves, loved by someone we love in silence)... Maybe Maria is a alegory for love itself... but its not for her, or for us... This young woman, standing in front of strangers in a strange land (Stockholm in 1964)... teaching us about love, self awareness and ultimately loss.. All of this she pulls from a simple song written for a young man falling in love with someone for the first time...
