It is hard to describe her: a genius with the soul of a saint and the voice of an angel. Listening to her is a supernatural experience, a glimpse into divinity. It is an otherworldly experience that washes over you floods you with joy and love. Sweetness and humility all bundled up with a glorious voice. What a combination she was!

I was so surprised by her speaking voice. Knowing her singing voice I would have never expected her speaking voice to be so light and airy. I've known and loved Sarah Vaughan work since I was a kid. An amazing Songstress along with Ella, Nancy Wilson, Della Reese, Dionne Warwick, Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Etta gosh so many that I can't even name them all... Even though I'm older now I'm blessed to have been born during the time that I was exposed to so many multi-generational singers. I mean I got it all blues, jazz disco, r&b, pop, neo-soul and a little touch of rock and roll and country. And the changes from music back then to now🤷🏽 it's been quite the ride...

Here you have evidence of why Sarah Vaughan was called "The Divine One." The pre-eminent 20th century composer, conductor, musician and critic of classical and jazz music said "Sarah Vaughan is quite simply the greatest vocal artist of our century...For it is one thing to have a beautiful voice; it is another thing to be a great musician-often, alas, a truly remote thing amongst classical singers; it is still another thing, however, to be a great musician with a beautiful and technically perfect voice, who also can compose and create extemporaneously...You can imagine that I do not say these things lightly, and that I do not make so bold as to make these claims without some prior thought and reason. For I am, as many of you know, someone who played for fifteen years in the orchestra of the Metropolitan Opera, loved every minute of it, and during those years heard a goodly share of great singing-from Melchior to Bjorling and DiStefano, from Flagstad to Sayao to Albanese and Callas, from Pinza to Siepi and Warren. Before that, as a youngster, I thrilled to the recordings of Caruso, Rethberg, Ponselle, Muzio, Easton, and Lawrence. So I think I know a little about that side of the singing art. And yet with all my profound love for those artists and the great music they made, I have never found anyone with the kind of total command of all aspects of their craft and art that Sarah Vaughan has."

Sarah Vaughan was one my dad's favorites, and I listened to her (and Dinah Washington) from an early age. I even had the opportunity to see her live in a small venue late in her life when her voice had gotten very deep, but still smooth and effortless. You should also check out her Brazilian Romance album with Milton Nacamiento; it's her step into bossa nova, and it's good! And Wikipedia just told me she was nominated for a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocalist Female for her performance on it.

And this is how she sounded with a cold! Thanks SO much for posting this and bringing her to the attention of today's audiences. I'm subscribing! Most reactors on KZbin seem to react to this Misty video. Would love to see you try something different. One that always blows me away is Fly Me to the Moon Live (kzbin.info/www/bejne/iafLeaKZr6-AhJosi=j1jPHZDb1qGU1IiA). It shows off more of her incredible range and musicianship than this one. Something livelier might appeal more to your uninitiated audience, though, like They All Laughed from early in her career (kzbin.info/www/bejne/oZbUfoaYjJZ4i80si=QPyTZSS7W1EjWQQs) or a song that'll be familiar to many, like Over the Rainbow (many performances available).

I recommend you react to Sarah Vaughan scat singing "Sassy's Blues" live in 1963 in this KZbin video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iJ7Mq4tsjZl-sLM Sassy is one of Sarah Vaughan's nicknames.
