PERFECT! Just what I needed. I had a heck of a mess the first time I used a roundover bit as I couldn't quite get it in my head exactly what height I needed. Used up a lot of test boards but finally got it right. Your technique is much faster and more precise!! Thank you very much!!

Shane this is an awesome video! It is exactly what I needed to show me how to do it step by step. That is much better than reading it, although I do appreciate all of the comments and different ways everyone does it. The time and effort is just unbelievable! You shouldn’t have went out to your shop when it was so cold! It certainly could have waited. I will definitely do just like you showed me and practice, practice and practice. I will let you know how it goes. I’m sure I will get the hang of it with practice. Again Shane I appreciate you so much for doing this. Be careful and stay warm!!!

Just what I needed to do to extend the pelmet in the kitchen. Never used a router so bought a palm one with was cheaper. Will practice on scrap wood and see the results. Very good tutorial. From reviews it seems cheaper router bits may be money down the drain but just one essential job to do but nevertheless less my bits will be quality ones and I will learn how to use a palm router. Great video clip for a beginner.

Thank you Shane...Very much enjoyed your presentation using the round over bit. What caught my eye to your channel was your Bosch router table. Just about a week ago I finished up the install of the same table for my table saws RH opening in the Delta 36-725 hybrid contractors saw... Through Home Depot I special ordered the RA-1181 & only used the table & the plate plus the hdwe & the power switch. What an absolute joy using this piece of equip! That extra lip edge you created simply by raising the bit slightly, created that 3 dimensional look that was missing without it. The beauty of this is, is the simplicity of it, very well done sir... Pitting it in few words, if you are a beginner like me and you wonder what roundover bit to buy well you don't need to buy an specific size to do just one one work, you can buy a bigger one ( talking about radius) and just adjust it as deep and you like it to be.
@anitagarvey465
@anitagarvey465 5 жыл бұрын
Not really, because the radius is different. If you want the roundover to be flush with the edges, you have to use the correct size that you want. To illustrate, take a dime and a quarter. Lay them on the corner of a piece of paper and trace the edge where it rounds off the corner. You will see what I mean. Different radius. You won't have a true roundoff if you just cut the quarter one short.

PERFECT!! Exactly what I needed after screwing up an end piece by having the the roundover bit extended too far past the baseplate. QUESTION: I used a 1/8"r roundover bit, so if I go over the end of the wood with a 1/4'r, 3/8"r, or a 1/2"r bit, will it get rid of the edge?? (If so, which size would be best to use?) Thank you Im new to woodworking ,im building a kitchen table 40"×60" I just bought a router table & bits When I get done I want to round over the edge of the table This video helped me out a lot..Just subscribed I do have one question im mounting my top on steel legs Im using 1"oak, I want my table to appear to be thicker by adding another 1" × 3" oak board along the edge now running it along the grain on the sides gluing with biscuits will be fine Now how do I run my board on the two sides with the End grain without running the risk of cracking do to expansion & contraction ,Is there a way to do it
@ShanesHobbyShop
@ShanesHobbyShop 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Biscuits does allow for some movement. Saying that, when you glue up wood going in different directions, you will always run the risk of cracking because of wood movement. The best way to help prevent this from happening is to give the outer board enough room to allow the movement.

Good video! But just to be super clear, if you just want a normal round over you want the round over bit corner to be just slightly below the table? It seems like sometimes when I am using the round over bit I get a little bit of a ridge and its not a super smooth round over.
@ShanesHobbyShop
@ShanesHobbyShop 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are correct. Always use a test piece first. If you have a ridge line, then slightly lower the router bit lower. get a new piece of scrap wood and try that again. Continue on scrap wood until you get the roundover you are looking for. Then be sure to lock down your router.

@@ShanesHobbyShop welcome back! Things turned out great! I made 13 plinths for the trim in our master bedroom which was part of a house addition built in the mid 1970s. The original side of the house was built in 1929 in the craftsman style, but the builders of the 70s side used 2.5 inch trim stock that didn't at all match the original woodwork. The plinths look fantastic, and I was able to create a larger trim profile that's an exact match to the trim elsewhere. Thanks so much for making this so simple and straightforward. It helped me get past my very first router project, and since then, I've done others as well! You demystified the machine and helped me get past that initial worry. Thank you!

I have a question, why do some roundovers have a bearing and others do not?
@gregoryhorn7825
@gregoryhorn7825 3 жыл бұрын
The bearing allows you to use the bit more easily with a hand-held router. If the bit has no bearing, you will need a router table with a fence, or some kind of fence on your hand-hand machine.

Can you use router bits on plastic cutting boards? It sorta feels like nylon. A grocery store was remodeling and got rid of those white countertop/cutting boards like they use in a deli. I want to make a router table and a sled for a table saw because it's slick. Need groves for T-track and router table insert, etc.
@ShanesHobbyShop
@ShanesHobbyShop 6 жыл бұрын
yes, I do believe so. Just take small cuts on the boards at a time
@BrainFizz
@BrainFizz 6 жыл бұрын
Router bits/cutters are generally either solid tungsten carbide or carbide tips, some are available made from High Speed Steel. All these will very happily cut through plastics. For routing plastics, dropping the spindle RPM slightly, taking slightly shallower cuts will produce nice clean cuts. One thing that can happen is the plastic gets hot and the chips partially remelt back together behind the cutter. Taking shallower cuts allows the waste to more easily disperse. increasing the router feed rate (how quickly you move the router along the work) will also decrease this happening as heat build up is more quickly removed.

@ShanesHobbyShop

being on the corner, I would sneak up on it as I did in this video. Softer woods like Pine will chip off very easy. So take off small shavings at a time

@ShanesHobbyShop
@ShanesHobbyShop 5 жыл бұрын
For practice, I suggest you go with something cheap. Just until you get the "Just" of your router table and router. Then you can upgrade to better bits, Like the CMT, Bosch or even my favorite, Infinity Router bits. Just keep in mind, softer wood, like pine, will have a more of a "Tear Out" and rougher look than harder woods, like oak, hickory, etc.

If you were going to use a fence with a ball bearing router bit, how do you set up the fence?

use a straight edge and align the fence with the ball bearing. You can even have the fence back just a tad to make sure you use the ball bearing for a more accurate cut with the router bit

@@ShanesHobbyShop Tx. That's what I thought. I did that, but first moved one edge of my fence up a bit (~ 1 mm) so that the first pass would take off 90% of wood. Then made the fence and all bearing even to take off the last 10%. Moved the height down and up 1/8 turn on my old (OLD !) Bench Dog router table also. That gave me a really nice final cut, no chattering, no tear out. Good videos.

what size bit are you using for the 2x4? I wanna round over a 1x3... would a 1/2in round over bit do it? with the correct bearing size as well?
