I found the flamethrower answer to be a bit disappointing because it only covered man portable flamethrowers. in WW2 there was a serious use of flamethrower tanks which have a range of more like 100 meters (Churchill crocodile) with fuel for 80 one second bursts. - Wikipedia Now the advantage is that a tank is not nearly as vulnerable as an infantryman, and these tanks actually tended to cause surrenders at a very high degree. The logic was to send an unignighted burst of fuel and anyone that got hit and a few people around would understand what could comes next... their will to fight evaporated. It's a specialised vehicle that is only useful in very close and usually urban combat, but highly effective. Some Vietnam sources may explain why such tanks are not as common anymore.

I liked the idea of having expert guests, but VSO wasted our time. That question can be answered as easily as a Google search... And 90% of what he said had nothing to do with anything. I hope his entire channel isn't like that. I also wanted to hear about flame tanks. Frankly, they were the real bunker buster of the day, and oxygen depletion is still a valid strategy today... We just don't have a weapon that does it.

I hate to be that guy… and yea I’m gonna get piled on here for this I know I am… but can you support your claim “why do you think the American Govt wants to take your semi auto rifles away?” Because I am not aware of a single proposal to do so. In the context of school shootings (which objectively happen here more than anywhere else BECAUSE of the wide and easy availability of firearms with few if any restrictions in most places) there could be the argument in the media that less guns=less school shootings, but I am not personally aware of any legislative proposal or executive order being considered at this moment to actually “take my guns away.” So, given that, why make the claim? Honest question. Thanks in advance for a non-combative reply, as I am only saying this to clarify for those who may not be aware and only listen to right wing propaganda on the subject. Nobody ACTUALLY wants to take your guns away, it gets talked about (because we used to have an assault weapons ban) after school shootings but it’s not actively being proposed or enforced. We can love guns and we can love our freedoms but we do not have to spread misinformation in order to protect those freedoms. With Archer, you have to remember it is built specifically for Swedish terrain. Much of the countryside has an infrastructure of good smaller paved and unpaved roads designed for heavy lumber transports. Tracked artillery would not be needed, nor wanted on those roads - it would tear the roads up. Going off road, wide tracked vehicles would get stuck between the trees whereas the Archer is mounted on the type of Volvo chassis that has been used for decades to haul logs in the same off-road terrain the Archer would operate.
@johanmagnusson2672
@johanmagnusson2672 Жыл бұрын
Also, keep in mind logistics. If a tracked vehicle breaks down, you have to get spare parts from far away if you have them. If an Archer breaks down, there are thousands of the civilian version of same vehicle scattered across every part of the Sweden to canibalize for spare parts.

it's odd that I am totally 100% behind Ukraine, I have such sympathy and pity for the. conscripts from Russia. Wagner group, hey they know what they signed up for.... but those that were tricked with promises of money, or training and being fully equipped - not just shipped off to the front barely able to shot a gun-my heart breaks. Wars are started by old men, like Putin, but it's the young men and women that die. For the Ukrainians, there is knowledge their cause is right. Indeed thinking of WWII, it is like everyone is supporting Ukraine to stop the Russians NOW, instead of letting the Russians go on to their plans to reclaim many of the former Soviet nations. If not stopped now, Russia will try again and again. Finland knows this. Poland knows this. Everyone knows this. So, there is great respect for the Ukrainian. soldiers. For the Russians, they will return to a decimated economy and a bleak future with no thank you or admiration.

It depends on what you consider being "against war". Surely all reasonable people should be against war. Nobody wants their loved ones to die. I've always been a pacifist and I've never even hit a person in my life, still I think that having a strong military is very important. Because you might live in a country that is all flower power and make love not war, but if the country next to you are a bunch of aggressive a-holes, they might want to come and dominate you. People only sleep safely in their beds at night because rough men are out there to guard them. So Am i a pacifist? Absolutely. Am I against war? Absolutely. Am I against the military? Absolutely not. To touch on the M1 ping point as well, Bloke on the Range did a video on it. Basically having someone try to react to it and move, before he was able to reload. The thing is, platforms like Ceasar, ATMOS, Archer etc are not competing with systems like M109, PzH 2000, K9 Thunder but with towed howitzers. Tracked platforms are fantastic systems and offer lots of capabilities but artillery is the game of masses and large numbers mean relatively cheap. Those wheeled platforms are essentially just logistics trucks with a cannon strapped in the back. It doesn't really get cheaper than that. And if you say it's not the game of masses you're preparing for counter insurgency, not full blown war. Obviously the swedes and the french missed the point by going for full automation with their platforms and thus making the things hella expensive.

I was the Army's Program Manager for the M113 Family of Vehicles during RVN (specifically 1966-68) and we operated a Closed Loop System of Supply with these key data points - 2500 M113s in RVN, 500 mi life on track sets, 5000 mi life before depot rebuild of each M113 was required, M113s avg use 500 mi/mo, and loss rate of 5% APC fleet/mo (meaning only half(!!) of the M113s were in a condition good enough to be returned for rebuild every month after 10 mo of combat) - and it took 1 mo to ship them home, 4 mo to do a total disassemble/rebuild, and another 1 mo to return them back to RVN in the Closed Loop - The other half of the total vehicle requirements were met by shipment of new M113s off the factory floor. [FYI - Responding to CG, USAMACV request, we had 50 fully loaded, armed, fueled, and with radios installed M113s loaded on USAF C-141s after his G-2, got Intel on NVA Tet Offensive in 1968. 14 of the C-141s arrived in time, to help save Ton Son Nuit and Da Nang AFBs. (We transferred the undelivered M113s to ships in Hawaii or Oakland, CA, for final delivery.)] The flow of needed repair parts was met by pushing Conex boxes of parts in bulk shipments (based on historical data that was updated monthly) to Designated Supply Points who would respond to the traditional requisition demand supply system. Meantime... The rest of the Army's worldwide fleet of M113 Family Vehicles were supported under the standard requisition/demand supply system and new vehicle production by FMC Corp was increased over 250% using Presidential National Emergency Authorities. Logistics is complicated, especially under wartime conditions!

It should be noted that the term "flamethrower" in Russia also refers to thermobaric single use rockets that are being used extensively by Russian forces(and Ukrainians when they capture them) to assault fortifications and ad hoc defenses. So, to answer the first question, they are being used in Ukraine, a lot.

Very different method of inflicting damage though, so there is a difference. Even if using incendiary rockets it would be deployed differently than a vehicle mounted flamethrower, you don’t burn down cities with flame tanks for example. Thermobaric weapons don’t incinerate so TOS-1A may be translated to heavy flamethrower but in reality it’s a MLRS.

@@dirtyaznstyle4156 My point is the term "flamethrower" has different definitions. The majority of casualties inflicted by pressurized canister flamethrowers are through asphyxiation, not through incineration(at least form a historical perspective). Thermobaric weapons are fuel-air bombs that kill with concussion , but both use ignited fuel to perform their tasks. Thermobaric weapons also shouldn't be confused with incendiary weapons like WP or napalm ordnance, but those are also being used in Ukraine. There have been first hand reports from humanitarian aid workers that have had to treat WP burns.

IIRC, it's not hundreds -- it's tens of thousands. A 155mm/52 barrel would be 8.06 meters long and have a muzzle velocity of maybe 1200m/s. The average velocity in the tube should be half the muzzle's so 2*8/1200 = 0.13 seconds. A = 2V/T^2/9.8 = 14491 G if I haven't mucked anything up.

When Americans were waiting to ambush an enemy, the clicking off of the safety was loud enough that they could hear and execute counter-ambush before the Americans could open fire. To the point that a quieter safety was a design requirement of the then in development M-14 and has remained in US military firearms design ever since.

A similar way to look at NATO artillery is to consider rifle cartridges. A .30-06, .308, .300 Winchester Magnum and .300 Savage are all _.30 caliber_ cartridges and can all fire the *same bullets*, they can even use the same propellants, but the amount of propellent charges vary and the chambers sized for the containers of propellents (cartridge casings), specifics of the rifle firing them (and artillery pieces ARE rifles) vary tremendously. In short...if you found yourself in battle with a .308 (7.62 NATO) chambered rifle and a truckload of .30-06 cartridges...you're f*cked! The Gulf War was as impressive as it was mainly because the coalition forces could navigate the open desert while the Iraqis didn't even know it was possible. Coalition forces did superb work in 1991, but they had the privilege of showing up exactly where the Iraqis counted on being an impenetrable barren desert. The Iraqi lines didn't have to be broken when they could just be circled then eliminated. In Ukraine, that wouldn't be an option without maybe an amphibious landing
