Gosh this was a fun adventure 👍We used to take 66 to visit grandparents in Modesto, so we left 66 at Barstow I believe. This brought back great memories, the last time we went as a family was in 1970. I remembered seeing some of the places Yes, those roads could be treacherous, imagine doing 55mph all day. My uncle and his family died in a terrible wreck just before Needles, in 1975 I think. I remember the reservations and seeing indians on horseback in their vicinity. Daddy Always drove over the Mohave at night to keep the car from overheating. We stopped at the last station before the Mohave and Daddy asked for water, for us and the car. The man charged daddy 2 dollars a gallon, a goodly sum back then. We would stop at rest stops, mom would cook on a camp stove while we kids ran around. We didn't have time and money for the shops and such, mom and dad would find motels with rooms about 16.00 every night. Daddy told us to watch out for Sidewinders, he said they crawled sideways. We ran around trying to find one so we could watch it! 😂 Really enjoyed the spectacular drone shots, I remember those hilly, hairpin turn roads, and the trains that seemed miles long and were moving faster than we were. Thanks for taking us along! Stay safe and GOD bless 😢

This brings back memories. We drove the full route in 2015 from LA to Chicago. Great time, so much to see and lots of history. We agree about the cities. Got lost in St Louis in the worst rain storm I’ve ever seen. Knee deep water in a matter of minutes! Everyone should do this trip at least once in their lifetime- well that’s my opinion!😮 Thanks for the trip down memory lane John.

Great video, Coach! I like to think about the thousands of people that were headed to California in the 1930’s along this route, hoping for a better life. The Grapes of Wrath has always been one of my favorite books and movie. In the scene where Grandpa Joad dies and the family has to bury him along the road. They don’t have any money for a funeral and they don’t want to involve law enforcement. This scene is very poignant. How many unmarked graves are along Route 66 from the Dust Bowl and Depression years? No one knows for sure.

Great compilation. I’ll have to go back and watch the individual state segments now. I generally try to avoid large cities so I will probably never try the entire route. I’d probably just figure out how to bypass those metropolises. I have a couple of questions that apply to this video and some of your others; How do you do all the research to get the information on when a motel or other business or attraction started and/or ended and when you post the cost of the motels you stayed in did you include the taxes? I wonder what the costs of those places would be now considering the inflation of recent years.
@TravelwithaWiseguy4 ай бұрын
Yeah the cities are the worst part - but it’s still worth it from beginning to end! For this video, there is a lot of information on the historical buildings so that helps. Both books and online. And yes I included the taxes. It was cheaper during Covid for sure.

From what I remember there is a Route 66 app you can use to follow the route. But it often goes on the modern version and I was always looking for the old parts of the road. So I used a couple different maps and apps to track it.
