You made the right calls on when to proceed or when to turn around & back track. There’s not much anyone can do when the road seems to evaporate right in front of you. I had a similar situation once in the Big South Fork NRA. I was trying to go between 2 cemeteries on the opposite side of a mountain. The maps said there was a forest service road that connected the two cemeteries but after a short drive the road was so overgrown that it disappeared. The drone would be a great tool to help make the should I keep going decision.
@TravelwithaWiseguy

I feel your pain haha. There was a part of the video I cut out where I was more visibly disappointed I couldn’t go through there 😂 I didn’t use the drone there because I was worried it would overheat!

IN MY WANDERINGS I HAVE FOUND WHAT I BELIEVE TO BE 3 DIFFERENT VERSIONS OF HIGHWAY 50 BETWEEN LEBO AND EMPORIA , ALTHOUGH I DIDNT HAVE ANY OLD MAPS OF THE AREA AT THAT TIME! SPEAKING OF TELEVISION, I RAN THE ALASKA HIGHWAY TWICE, DELIVERING TRUCKS TO ALASKA! IN CANADA THERE WERE LARGE AREAS WITH NO TV SERVICE, BUT THE MOTELS HAD TELEVISIONS! WHEN CHECKING IN THEY WOULD ASK IF YOU WANTED TO WATCH TV , AND IF SO WOULD GIVE YOU A HAND FULL OF TAPES FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT!!

Boy, whoever that hermit was, he was serious about being alone! Beautiful country, but one in which respect for nature should be remembered. There are no gas stations, stores, help if you get lost or incapacitated, mechanics, etc. I think you did the right thing by turning around. There weren't any cars or people anywhere. Anything could happen! Great video. Thanks for the trip.

Thanks for this series . I’m a Brit and am aiming to visit every state in the USA. My next trip is US 50 from San Fran to Grand Junction the down the Million Dollar Highway to San Jose and across to Flagstaff and up to Vegas . What appeals to me is the 2 lane driving , I drove through New Jersey last year and the driving was quite aggressive, and I live in London and have driven in Italy . Hope this trip gives me time to drive and appreciate the stunning scenery. Love what you do thank you 🙏

I really enjoyed this adventure. As I've said before, you can find a lot of interesting places when you slow down and take the dirt roads. I watch some KZbinrs in Utah. They recover/ rescue folks that get stuck, broken down etc. When that Utah sand gets hot- as the temperatures you showed- it gets very powder like. If you don't air down your tires you'll just sink in it. Most of the folks they rescue are visitors in rental vehicles that don't realize this. I was worried about the sand, but it looked like you had a good rock ground under it. It's a wonder you didn't see side by sides, quads and such in those areas. If you ever get a chance to take a tour in a side by side, etc. it's a fun adventure. Always enjoy the drone shots, I like seeing the country. Hope you got some good rest, you earned it with all the hiking. Thanks for taking the long way. Stay safe and GOD bless

I really enjoy your channel and explore old highways and towns as well. One tip: if you go to online auction sites you can find old Rand McNally maps from 1970’s and 80’s. They come in really handy to cross reference with newer maps when you’re trying to find highways that names have changed, or towns that aren’t marked anymore.

This was a great video! I think you made the right decision about traveling old 50. Back in 1999 I drove west to east on US 50 across Nevada and into Utah. I may have been a little jaded in my outlook, having just traversed the spectacular scenery of the Nevada mountains, and Great Basin National Park, but I don’t have any particularly strong memory of the road through Utah to Delta. I’m sure it was lovely desert scenery, but nothing compared with what you saw on the old route.

I hope you do not take this as some old man giving you one of those "how it used to be" spiels, but I have a question. In 1940, my parents, sister and I .....oh, two grandparents too......got in the new 1940 Chevy and headed to California . Only being a couple of years old, I don't remember a whole lot oa that trip. Since US 50 goes throught Hutchinson, I am assuming they took that route to California. In your videos, taking the Old US 50, it seems to be mostly a gravel road. I was wondering if those old dusty roads were originally paved roades.....or do you suppose they used to be gravel all they way to California in 1940?
@TravelwithaWiseguy
@TravelwithaWiseguy Жыл бұрын
It’s a good question. I don’t know for sure, but I assume there was some non-paved parts of the road back then. Especially in this very desolate part of the trip. Would’ve been a heckuva trip in 1940!

It is pronounced "Sipeo" not "Skipeo". And you should have included something about Lehmans Cave and Wheeler Peak while you were in Great Basin National Park. I grew up in Ruth and Ely Nevada and lived in Millard County, Utah for 20 years. Near the Ruth turn off is a place called Garnet Hill were we went and looked for Garnets. If ever you go there you need to watch for rattle snakes. Oh and you missed Kings canyon on the "new" highway 50. It is pretty scenic but not as scenic as the way you went. Thanks for the ride!

This adventure gets to be more of an adventure the further you have traveled! Makes me wonder if I had made that trip a year ago to bring an old Cadillac back. If today's 50 isn't any better than the old 50 you traveled, I would of been in a work of hurt! Not that much ground clearance to an old Caddy. The scenery you encountered on this section is beyond belief. There are days that I may of considered moving to hermit's cabin. But then again, we all have had those days. We're there any people at the casino? So funny to have one in the middle of nowhere.

There were a few people there that night. Maybe 10. We’re not far from Baker, Nevada. Small community.

Historically were some US highways gravel, not paved? 🤔

Great question - I don’t know, but I’m guessing it was gravel for maybe the early parts of its history.

You need a good four-wheel drive pickup and a satellite phone if you're going to continue to go out in the middle of nowhere where there's no cell service.

Yeah it wasn’t my best decision 😂 although I did have 4-wheel drive 🤷🏼‍♂️

I keep wondering what you would do should you run out of gas or get bit by a rattlesnake or a scorpion and seeing how there's no cell phone service. I just can't imagine going the way you go. Happy trails to you and God bless.

I wasn’t too far from civilization haha. Has plenty of gas. A rattler may have been more of a problem 😬
