This video is about the Router lift test between the INCRA Mast-R-lift II and a Triton router with an INCRA mounting plate.
This video focuses on the router lift aspect and not on the router aspect.
If we talk about the router aspect, I think the Triton is a very nice router for its money. I prefer the AEG over the Triton, but it is hard to visualize why.
I like the sound better, and it looks and feels better. Working with both of them give the same results.
Visit www.hookedonwood.online for free plans and other nice content for the woodworker.
The free plans for the closed box under your router table will be available in a few days.
Here you find the links where I bought the equipment shown in this video. I did not get paid for this video, nor do I have a special relationship with these company's, other than that I am a customer of them.

I'm used to larger, corded routers kzbin.infoUgkxfQ5_mgwq6PcudJvAH25t-I4D-3cTPz4z so this was a different experience for me. Basically, this is an incredibly sweet machine, fits well in the hand, etc. It has slightly less power than I'm used to, but that's understandable. Maneuvering freehand takes some practice. These days, it's especially nice to be able to avoid power cords. This is above the level of a hobbyist but below a pro level.

A good comparison - thank you. I have the bigger 2400W Triton router with the incra fence, incra mounting plate and clean sweep inserts. This set up is super accurate and I wouldn't change it for anything else. The ability to change router bits with one spanner quickly with the Triton is also very convenient.

Hi Dennis I use a big Triton in my table and this comes with an excellent dust extraction shield which removes all the dust from below without any obstruction to the lock or switch. I have " modified" the switch so that I can leave it on and still raise the router to the top activating the spindle lock. This is OK as I have a NVR switch on the front of the table ( but I still always unplug the lead before changing bits). I think the Incra plates would improve dust collection a little but by using a generously sized insert I find it is pretty good. At the moment I am torn between building one of your new design benches and Ron Paulk's latest version which is easier to move if I want to work outside the workshop ( in UK workshop is about 150M from the house).

Good review! The Triton comes with a moulded dust collector around the bit. (I see you did not fit this). I use this in conjunction with a fence extractor. Works well. Because you need access to the switch (because of the spindle lock power interlock) as well as the lift lock, a box gets in the way. I fitted a DRO to the lift, so I get a readout of the height at the touch of a button. Fit a guide for the winding handle and it drops in easily.

Hello Dennis, very good and informative video, thank you. I wanted to add, that there is also a router from Trend (T11) with a similar mechanism - but it´s a different price level than the triton. When I am going to plan my router table, I probably will chose the trend (because when you want to use the machine also as a template router, then the handling from the trend is because of the balance probably better). Thanks and all the best! BTW: I am very impressed with your dust collection system on the router table. Thank you, because that is what I am looking for, when I am building my router table.

@@staskotula4301 Check the amperage rather than the HP rating. It's a much more accurate representation. The Triton TRA 001, listed as 3.25 HP, is rated for 15 amps @ 120 volts. The Bosch MRF23EVS is listed as being 2.3 HP but is also rated for 15 amps @ 120 volts making both routers 1800 watt machines regardless of Triton's inflated claims. The fixed base for the Bosch includes above the table adjustment.

I have always wanted a router lift and I saw the Triton at the UK's D&M Tool woodworking show. As of today, Triton JOF001 1/2" router £180, INCRA Mast-R-Lift II £470, UKJ Router Elevator £430. Both the Incra & UJF require the additional purchase of a router. It really is a no-brainer in my view and I bought the Triton and modified my existing table plate for free. I find the Triton a superb achine for the price (indeed, at any price!); loads of user-friendly features and safety features.

Very well done video, thank you for making it. I have been considering purchasing the Triton 3hp router with a plate like the Incra, since it seems to offer the best value. But I have so far been scared away by the many reviews I have read, reporting that the mechanism that winds the router up and down is constructed of cheap plastic components that routinely break, rendering the router lift useless. I wonder, in your experience with the Triton router so far have you had any trouble with that mechanism? Does it seem cheaply constructed? Thanks for your videos!

This is a timely and great review. I live in Germany, and last week I replaced my Triton TRA001 in the Incra router plate with the Incra Mast-R-Lift II and the AUKTools router. I was thinking about the AEG router, but then I found the AUKTools router and the option I bought has the external power and speed control. My router table has the CleanSweep housing under the table, and it was getting tiresome to constantly open the router stand cabinet and open the CleanSweep access door every time I wanted to lock or unlock the router height. The Mast-R-Lift II is a joy to operate and the AUKTools router meets all of my requirements. The CleanSweep inserts and enclosure are fantastic for controlling chips and dust. Now I need to find someone in Europe that wants a Triton router and Incra mounting plate. :-)

I use to have that exact set up, the older Triton router with the Incra standard plate. For the record, you do not have to drill the hole for the height adjustment rod, the incra plate is made with it. Also, Porter Cable 895 has an above the table height adjustment, with more precise adjustment and the Incra plate for the porter cable has the hole for the height adjustment rod. As for the Triton router, it was a very frustrating router to use. As you said, no precise height adjustment. Also, often when I was trying to fine tune a bit height, as soon as I unlocked the router it would drop, so I'd have to start all over again. Also, the pin that locks into the shaft for bit changes, so often it would not lock in. It was not jammed from dust, moved freely, just could not lock in all the time. Since that is the only way to change bits on that router, it was very annoying. I was also not a fan of the power switch being the lock out, more reaching under the table. I get the safety factor, but it was annoying. I have a safety paddle that is very accessable. While the triton had plenty of power, did everything I wanted, it was beyond frustrating to use. I ended up getting the Jessem Mast-r lift for incra and it's a joy to use. It's a work of art and so precise. With a porter cable 3-1/4 hp motor it's just amazing. Gave the Triton to my son, I do not miss it one bit.

Hi Dennis, First of all I hope you and your family are all well. I am Dimitrios, from Greece. I am a hobbyist in my starting point Of working with wood projects. And while I was researching for a router plate and a router for my woodworking bench, I saw one of your amazing videos explaining in detail the incra router plates and AEG 1400 and triton routers. Since I wanted the incra master lift, your description actually solved all my questions about it and went for it in combination with the AEG 1400 router. My question is, whether you start your router manually each time from below the bench or did you use any kind of on/off switch? I bought one switch like that but it is not compatible since my AEG router has a safety switch on it, and if I leave it always on in order to operate the router through the safety switch, it will not start. AEG’s safety precaution makes the router “think” that electric power must gone down and in order to avoid any accident when power is still on, you have to turn it off and on again to operate. Sorry for all these details I just needed your opinion if possible since you have this exact combination and are probably more experienced with it than me. Thank you very much in advance.

Hi Dennis, fellow Dutchie here....nice review as usual...keep up the great work! I just started using the Triton router in combination with a Kreg mounting plate (similar principles as the Incra however bit less fancy). I was just wondering if you had removed the spring from the Triton before mounting it to the plate (this is also recommended in the Triton manual)? The reason I ask, I have not yet experienced any down shifting of the router without locking it in place while using it. But then again, I have perhaps not been using it long enough to see if this had any significant effect.
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I did remove the spring. I experienced the downshifting from the beginning. It slightly dropped. The was not that noticeable, but I had some unexplained differences with dado's. I believe it is also recommended to use this lock. I have to say that the drop I showed in the video was big. It normally does not drop that much. But that said, maybe it is just my Triton that does it.

The Triton has two spring loaded carriage bolts for mounting its accessory plate. They can also be used to mount the router to a router table. This allows you to release the router for hand held use very simply and quickly without using tools and without the hassle of unscrewing/screwing four screws. For some reason NO ONE does this when they show the Triton even though the company does it themselves and recommends it. Also the Triton has a dust collecting shield with hose nozzle so you don't need a box. I built a box and lined it with towels to cut the noise down.

I have the Triton TRA001 and I bought a Kreg mounting plate for it. Like the Incra the Kreg is pre drilled for the router and the hole for the winding handle is also pre drilled. The Kreg plate was about €70 including delivery and import duties to Austria, from the US on Amazon.com. This would have been more than €100 on Amazon.de. The Kreg plate is made of high density plastic rather than aluminium but it is extremely solid, it doesn't sag and I'm in the process of making a router bench for it at the moment. I like the design of your dust box and I will definitely include something similar in my table.

Thanks, the build is going well, though I have some work to do to completely level the Bench top. The heavy wood board I have is ever so slightly bowed so i will have to flatten it out before I start to use it. Keep up the good work I enjoy your videos.

Any reason you have 2 router combinations in your shop? Do you switch between the AEG and the Triton? If so, for what kind of job?

Thank you Dennis for your wonderful inspiration. Been today to buy a panel of 18mm mdf & 18mm plywood to make your fantastic bench. I'm looking to purchase a router and the Triton TR01 seem better value for money,, 2400w, 12mm/1/2" collet and the price difference is about 50€..Do you have any advice/suggestions please?

i went for the incra mast r lift ii as jessem makes it basically and incra added the maglock. I have something coming from incra and will see how it stacks up to the jessem stuff I have, but I have doubts. All the jessem stuff I have is so well built like a tank and quality I have not seen from any other brand.
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Chuck, Jessem is one of kind from building point of view. I do not know what you have coming from INCRA. Most products I have from INCRA I like very much! It is good quality, but looks a bit old fashion compared to Jessem. The LS positioner though is un beatable if you ask me.

@@HookedonWood I got the miter express sled thing, its ok, not sure $170 worth as quality control was poor and not finished well. I have all the incra t squares. I will get the incra positioner when i get a proper table saw, but for now a laminated mdf router table and jobsite table saw it is as my working space is extremely limited. I have a lot of hand tools to make up for lack of space. I almost got the Hongdui miter gauge after watching your review but went with jessem, i know the miter gauge is half of what I paid for the table saw, but I am looking into the future. The jessem mite r excel II is great, and heavy. There is a slight cup in the fence which a sacrifical fence fixes by pulling out on the middle of the fence when you tighten the bolts, but if you are not using a sacrificial fence with certain items its guarantee blowout so it is a self correcting problem, but you could clamp backerboard to it if you wish not to put a fence on it. I email jessem about this to see if this was a implemented design or not. I do not need 1 degree accuracy so it covers what I need. Thanks for the videos, have been watching a lot of them, i did not know about you but love your work.

I think the ls positioner from INCRA is the best product they have and for to inexpensive considering how accurate and repetitive it is. I did not like the squares. The router lift is great, but ofcourse that is a Jessem. You will love the LS positioner👍

You left out the only router lift that functionally changes the operations you can perform on the router table. The MLCS PowerLift Pro takes the concept of the plunge router and inverts it for use in the router table. The foot pedal allows you to bring the spinning bit up into the work piece. Making it possible to do mortising, circle cutting, stopped dadoes, incremental passes, etc. Combine all that with .001" precision movements, memory positions, and other computer controlled features and its easy to see why it's unmatched by any mechanical lift. So would you please consider the MLCS Powerlift Pro. It's a game changer

@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I do not have the Triton anymore but I had it for 2 years. (I sold my workbench including router) But I never experienced difficulties with the mechanism. I can not, or did not look inside. A viewer told me ones that this is a inferior mechanism. But again, I can not confirm this. I had the 1400 watt version, so this is a smaller one than the 3hp version. But I can tell you, as I mentioned in the video, that my Incra lift also, sometimes need to be cleaned te lift smooth again. My experience with the Triton 1400 mechanism the 2 years I worked with it is good. I also read some reviews you refer to but I did not have these experience with it. to be sure, buy it with a thrustful company.

Rockler makes a cheaper alternative to the Incra mounting plate for the Triton routers. I think it is made of some kind of composite material though, I'm not sure, and it only comes with a single insert. Not sure how to get more, as there is only a single vendor here in Denmark. The advantage of the Rockler mounting plate is that it already has the hole for the raising handle pre-drilled in the right location. I read somewhere that you can make the lifting of the Triton routers smooth and easy by removing the spring from the mechanism, haven't got around to testing it on my MOF001 yet though.

Hi Dennis, Thanks for the great review. It comes at just the right time for me. I am still undecided whether I should take the Incra lift with the AEG router. Or better the lift from Jessem with the Dewalt 625e router. The AEG has 1400 W, the Dewalt 2000 W. Can you give me an advice? Or better help me with the decision? Thanks & greeting Djamil
@HookedonWood
@HookedonWood 4 жыл бұрын
Hello Djamil, the good thing is, you can not go wrong with both combinations. I am satisfied with the AEG. But i think de Dewalt is also a very nice router. I choose for the INCRA because of the magnalock system and better dust extraction. I do not know how much more powerful the Dewalt what this mean when using it. Can you do things you can not do with a 1400 watt version because i think you should make multiple passes when milling.

Not only Triton has that feature... the AEG in the video has that feature as well... What's nice about the Triton is that it locks when you lift it to the to so you can exchange the bit without removing the whole thing from the table or trying locking it while it's still installed in the table
