Y’all should look at the god awful fence design. I am so disappointed with this supposed to be great product. The fence is a pos. It takes so many attempts to get it to lock in place without moving. Not only that, they use case harden bolts into extremely thin aluminum to hold it in place. Look at those bolts wrong and they strip. (That’s from someone that worked 35 years with aluminum). If I knew then, what I know now, I would had never bought this terribly designed table.

Thanks for posting I built mine but I was wondering if maybe my router is too far away from the back of my table. Could you tell me minimum distance on yours?

This is not a practical approach because you didn't show it working! Until then this is all theory, also there are much better systems out there if you have the cash.

discguyjoe - This is a design that has been tested and we use it all the time in the Woodsmith Shop... sorry we didn’t show it in use for this video. I agree that would have been helpful to see.... And there are always better solutions if you have more money to throw at it - This is just one option. 👍

Plans for the cabinet?

You could add a vacuum port at the bottom to take care of the bottom and join them together with a duct diverter allowing you to run the top port while routing and then the bottom port when done to clean the bottom of the cabinet. Alternatively, you could move the chord hole to the left or right side of the cabinet and then mount the vacuum port vertically in the center nearer the top. That would give you top and bottom vacuuming in the cabinet to minimize the chips at the bottom. I think I would go for the top and bottom dual port with the diverter. Add a little imagination and the diverter lever could be made out of wood and look like a proper wood shop tool.

i had a question. I have a typical shop vac connected to a dust deputy. it has a 2.5" hose on it. would i be able to still get good dust collection in the box if i connected a 2.5" hose to the back of it as well as it connecting to the fence via a y- spilt duct to connect them both before connecting to the dust collection?

Guys, this is not a good design. Please consult ASHRAE and ACGIH ventilation standards. You designed an effective air sweep but you short circuited the the area where dust is generated and where the user is working. The sweep should be on top of the table, not below it.

perhaps they could T in a standard dust port for the router up at the fence opening to improve this? Is that what you were getting at? I have one of those on mine but do not have a one stage dust collection system and am trying to figure a way to connect a shop vac in a cabinet that can bring the horrible noise down a bit.

There is already a dust port for a shop vac in the fence of this particular router table. We failed to mention that in this video, but it is an integral part of this purchased table. We have designed dust sweeps for the top in the past , as well. This particular video is just highlighting the storage cabinet and under cabinet dust collection for an open base router table.

I think the vents in the front are the best part of the cabinet.... it makes sense that you need air flow coming in so the dust collection can actually pull air and dust with it.

Thanks... every time I look at our router table now I also wonder if I could convert it into a smoker or grill somehow. :)

Could this also be incorporated with table top collection as well? A large portion of the dust is also generated on top of the table.

Frank Thornal - There is already a dust collection port in the fence for this router table. We failed to mention it in the video because it comes with the router table and we’re only adding the case underneath to it.

So this would be used in conjunction with the fence's dust collection port? Would a separate dust collector be needed? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Frank Thornal - The port in the fence is sized for a shop vac so you could use that as a separate dust collector, but I guess the next step in design would be to have a splitter to hook up hoses from both to a single dust collector.

This is a well thought out design. The solid red rings would appear problematic in pulling the chips & dust out fast enough because of such a limited amount of space around the cutter bit. What made me aware of the importance of this was looking at the Incra Vacuum box. The box kit includes a bit plate with slots cut into it at circular angles, thereby pulling dust & chips off the table at a rapid rate from start to finish on a cut... I'm basing this on my observation off a KZbin demonstration from INCRA I believe. I really like the system demonstrated here, by having control of the rate of fresh air pulling through from the outside, very well done imo... Bill on the Hill... :~)

Tom Holmes - You could definitely add the dust collection aspects of this design to our Combination Router Table. You would just need to add the door with the vents on the front with vacuum port on the back.

The intake should be at least 50% more area than the exhaust duct.

I kinda have to agree with Phil, I think the dust collection should be at the bottom.... the bigger chips and dust could get sucked into the router if they build up then you have another problem... This table has a top dust port that should take care of the dust on the top side doesn't it ?
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine
@WoodsmithShowandmagazine 5 жыл бұрын
Excellent points... Yes, there is a dust port above the table in the fence that you should definitely still use. You are correct that there will still be some larger chips that will collect inside the cabinet, so will likely have to clean those out from time to time so they don't build up too much.
