When I built one of these types of diff up from scratch with a KAM 4.1:1 gear set and ATB, I was very surprised at how stiff the pinion is to turn by hand without the seal or diff carrier fitted. I had expected the preload to give quite free rotation, but the book figures gave a feel that seemed far heavier than I anticipated.

I guess the ATB made the difference - I can turn this with a drill

@@BritannicaRestorations I was surprised by the pinion stiffness before fitting the carrier to the casing. I tested it with a lever and fishing spring balance to confirm the bearing preload was right. It’s uncommon for enthusiasts like me to build diffs from scratch, unlike someone like you, so I didn’t have your experience of what the pinion would feel like. It all came out well, though - I had to use oil paint from an art store to run a pattern, but the mesh was good.

Hi Mike. Totally unrelated question to this vid but I have a dilemma and was wondering if I could bend your ear for some advice about an overheat fault I’ve never seen before on my 300tdi?

I’ve pinned down that the Head gasket has blown, fine no problems. But the head shows extreme wear at the 3 waterways centre of the mating surface of the head( the ones sort of triangle shaped.heavily scored and pitted. Any idea what causes this? I’m going to bung a new head on but really want to know what’s caused this damage so I can try rectify it now before it does it again. Orrrr is this wear normal?

@@harveysmith100 no probs mate. This is the most weirdest head failure I’ve ever seen. No usual symptoms of head gasket failure just over pressure in the header tank. Finally pulled the head off after total refurb of the coolant system. Head scratcher, is just like to know what’s damaged the head so much?

Usually cause by corrosion as not many use coolant which is not only antifreeze but anti corrosion too I fill the pits in with JB weld - works great The original style head gaskets were rubbish and the aftermarket even worse Use the Victor Rienz metal shim gasket - end of problems
