I know that, seat had not dropped and was still sound. Alas funds were limited so this was the best solution

Nice cylinder bore gauges. I have an old set of the telescopic one which are a bit of a pain to use.they have a habit of moving when you lock them off.

I have a set of old Moore and Wright bore gauges that work in a similar fashion but with a micrometer scale rather than a dial gauge. As much as I love old school M&W kit this is way easier

Interesting, I’ve had an exhaust valve with a knackered seat after the valve partially torched thanks to the secondary air injection on the 80s stage 1v8s. Ended up with new seats . It was as badly chipped as yours so could have probably gotten away with it

That's an interesting engine in terms of where it's at wear wise isn't it. It looks like all of it would do another turn but you've got it apart so the customer has choices to make. If it was mine I'd be tempted to keep it as it is unless I knew I was going to be doing a lot of miles. With the money saved I might just be tempted to get that valve seat sorted so it didn't play on my mind but that's just my preference as I just don't trust today's petrol.

Super interesting! Do you have a preferred supplier of engine parts? Heard a lot about dodgy aftermarket parts being sold nowadays... cheers!

Shoddy workmanship by the machine shop not doing you a favour. Spoil the ship for a hapert of tar. Why run the risk should have put a new seat in. Leaving it the way it is will in itself create a hot spot and may burn the valve....are you going to do the job again for free under warranty?

I wasn't impressed initially, Anthony shared his immeasurable experience to put my mind at rest and give me the knowledge to discuss options with my customer. Because of budget and the low risk of failure we collectively decided to leave it as is, but to monitor the situation. Should compression drop then unlucky but replace the valve seat. indications and expertise suggest that it will be fine for many 10s of thousands of miles of use. The customer was instrumental in making this choice when given the hard facts. Always a tricky call to make with something that has life left but is compromised verses spending money to make it like new
