Roving for Rudd - Deano's Diary

Dean is a keen specimen angler who will stop at literally nothing to ensure he has the best chance of catching a fish of a lifetime. In this latest episode of Deano's Diary we headed to the Fens in pursuit of a monster Rudd.
Roving for these majestic creatures is really the only way of catching a number of them as they're wild fish and will move away from any angling pressure, so in order to be as mobile as Dean was he needed to travel light. He used a 11ft Aventus waggler rod which has an ergonomically designed handle to ensure pure comfort when holding the rod throughout the day, a loaf of bread, an unhooking matt and his net! Casting at moving fish proved to be the best tactic throughout the day.

Don't think many would disagree with rounding up 1:15 1/2 to 2lb Deano. Great job catching one to order for the cameras mate. I've not fished for Rudd in over 30 years, as a kid I used to target them on the Basingstoke canal, float fishing a small stillwater blue float, no shot down the line, greased line to make it float, and a crispy brown caster on the hook to make it float, loosefeeding maggot/caster to make the shoal swirl, casting beyond them and trying to pick up the bigger fish on the back of the shoal. Anything over 1lb was considered a 'lump', would love to catch one at 2lb. Truly a pretty fish. Sadly being surface feeders they were decimated early on by cormarant predation so it is great to watch you catch specimen size rudd (fairly) recently. Makes me look at the pellet waggler in a new light too. Thanks for that tip.

Used to catch quite a few Rudd when I was a nipper, the ponds had lots of them but some were gold others weren't. Definitely not hybrids tho.

I'm using similar tactics here in holland, but my weapon is a 10ft aventus float rod, perfect rods for the narrow polders (drains). A lot of people here are using long ultra light spinning rods or converted fly rods but I'll stick with the aventus. Great to see some less match fishing based coarse, love it.
