@@mintz347 exactly they were mostly Serbians because croats were fascists in ww2. But what happened in these lands is very sad, and it was censored here in italy (by the communists) until 2004. In schools no one talked about these massacre committed on giulian italians.

The Istrian people that emigrated (fled?) from Croatia en masse after WWll, were they Italians, Italianized Croats, or a combination of both?
@felicepompa1702
@felicepompa1702 3 жыл бұрын
Coastal cities were mostly italian of venetian descent until 1944 (>80%) while the hilly interior was majority slav (mostly slovenes, croats migrated there under Tito's dictatorship) italians were also the majority in cities like Rjeka(Fiume) and Zadar (Zara) but before the Austrian edicts of the 1860s italians were the majority in all of dalmatia's biggest cities while being a big minority in Montenegro and even in West Slovenian cities like Postumia
@beppogiglio
@beppogiglio 3 жыл бұрын
about italianized croats about for 500 years Istria was divided between Venice and Austria, ( 2/3 Venice, 1/3 Austria)-in the 16th and 17th centuries due to frequent plague epidemics (every 15 years) as well as wars Venice and Austria immigrated population. Venice immigrated the population mainly from Dalmatia, Montenegro and Albania - the Venetian Terre del mar- because the land in Istria is difficult to cultivate and the population had to deal mainly with small livestock (sheep, goats) and the peasants of northern Italy did not cope with such land. Immigrants from Italy usually finished in towns. Even so when analysing surnames from town of Pula- Pola from 16. th century there are about 43 % of ”slavic” surnames but it is wrong to say that they were slavs. The population of the cities quickly accepted Italian customs and language For instance - mayors of two Istian towns today ( Bale -Valle and Vodnjan - Dignano) have the same name Edi Pastrovicchio and they are italians. But there were a priest in Dignano in 1604 called Domenico Pastrovich, the same priest was called Domenico Pastrovicchio in 1608. And Pastrovich are the Montegrino fraternity ( tribe) settled around St Stefan and immigrated to Istria in 1567. ( Pastrovich fraternity have about 4o different surnames and can be found in whole Istria- croats and italians ). As there are many montenegrino surnames in Istria there are also many albanian surnames ( also settled in 16. century like Maras, Poropat, Albanese, Macura, Flego, Ceci. Bukmir, Kapor...... and so on) Of course you can find croat and italian versions of these surnames, Croats surnames originates mostly from Central Dalmatia. For instance surname Ivetic originates from Herzegovina, they were first settled near Zadar, later from Zadar to Istria. Some returned from Zadar ( Zarra) to Bosnia (in the vicinity of Banja Luka where they received land. So. today we have persons who have the same surname ( Ivetic) and are croats, italians or serbs.
@invoker7826
@invoker7826 2 жыл бұрын
They were Romans who later became Italians. Croats are Slavs who came from Ukraine and invaded the Balkans in the 8th century and settled in the interior Croatia, they have nothing to do with modern day coastal "Croatian" cities.

Istria belongs to Croatia only since 1991 .The whole coast line was populated by autochthonous istrians ( istro-veneti ) then after WW2 250 000 people left and Istria was re-populated with others from the balkans. Eventough Tito and Tudzman tried to erase every trace of italianity if you happen to go to Rovigno , Albona, Pola etc you can still hear elders speaking original dialects besides in Istria even the stones still speak italian.

What city in Croatia looks like Croatia? First of all Im Croatian. My country was ruled by italy (istria, dalmatia), austro hungary (zagorje, slavonia) all those countries left its mark on our cities. People who live in istria, dalmatia, slavonia, zagorje long ago declared themselfs as Croats, I cant understand why do u italians have problem with Croats?! After all we were connected to you centures ago, Croats are RimoChatolic just like Italians. My grand parents were Italians by my father side I declare myself as a Croat, i also love italy. And u italians are well welcomed in Croatia truly. I have lost of italian friends who dont see problem bethween Croats and italians. Croatia didnt have a chance to build its own cities since it never was ruled by itself, we were always ruled by others, but thankfully since 91' we are independent, and thankfully our Croatian indentity has never faded away no matter who ruled our land. @@louisefun3095 i have tried to make a good comment that everyone would understend, but u only want to argue in comments. I dont have complex as u do. Im very much happy person living in such a beautiful contry called Croatia. I wish u all the best. Fighting online wont bring u happines, it wont make dalmatia or istria italian it will only leave u with hatred and sadness. In my previous comment i tried to explain u that Italians are well welcomed guests in Croatia, that we here dont have any issues with Italy or Italians. Like I said before I know manny Italians who like Croatia but dont have oppinion that u do. Everybody in Dalmatia and Istria consider themselfs Croat, well atleast 90%, italians dont even make 10%. @@aesthetic2660 these statistics are probably accurate, but they are such because genocide was perpetrated against Italians, as many as 350,000 Italians were expelled and killed. Unfortunately, little is known about this either.
