I have had several other Alfa's over the years, (and many other makes) and fully accept that they had their flaws. But my 164TS really honestly had no flaws. I drove it from 60K miles up 375K miles and it was still going strong when I sold it. Right until the end, every journey, even down to the local shops, was a fun event! No rust, no electrical problems in all that time. 2 clutches, 1 clutch master and slave cylinder, and some suspension bushes, and regular standard maintenance. Still the best car I have ever owned, and regret selling it.

My dad had a 164 Cloverleaf - K plate, so i think it was a 1992 but the build date was earlier. I loved that car. Sounded so good, and was so different at the time. The car was reliable, the only thing that let it down was the poor dealer network. Clutch went at 60k, but that was really the only thing that went wrong, despite the car being broken in to twice. I guess it stood out a bit. He had a Twinspark before, and liked it so much which is why he went with the Cloverleaf after.

I always say the 164 is the best car I've ever owned and best I ever will. Of course, that means nothing unless you know what else I've owned. So I rate the 164 (my 93 auto was better than my 92 manual), better than: 72 mbz 280se 4.5, 73 honda cvcc, 77.5 porsche 924, 82 jag xj6s3, 82 fiat 2000, 85 mbz 380sl, 85.5 porsche 944, 86 mbz 260e, 90 acura legend coupe, 97 maxima, 98 and 99 subaru foresters, 02 toyota highlander. i have of course driven over a hundred other cars, and no, bmw never impressed. 535 was ok. almost had a 320 as my first car, spent lots of time with the 325 conv, so glad i didn't buy the 735, but really, the alfa 164 destroys bmw's where it really counts. and no, the alfa 164 doesn't rust after 30 years in ohio salt and snow, and mine doesn't burn a drop of oil at 166k mi.

I had a 1994 164 Alfa Romeo in 2002 and It was causing people who were driving brand new Mercedez and BMW's to look at it as if they were stalking me. Everywhere I went, people just couldn't stop staring at it and me. I do hope Alfa will bring it back restyled keeping to its original.

The 164 (168 as it's known here) is truly a timeless and legendary car to own and drive. Both TS & V6 are dearly loved & appreciated here. Sadly, difficulties (equals pricey too) in sourcing parts for regular maintenance and wear & tear is what keeps enthusiasts from chasing the 164/168 over here 😭

These cars were fully galvanised and didn’t suffer from rot. The electrics let them down.

@@dinopappous6639 I owned three 164s over 14 years. I had two of the 2 litre Twin Sparks and a 3.0 litre 24 valve V6 Super, all manual gearbox. The S model was USA spec. As you can guess I was very fond of them. I had very little trouble with mine. The Twin Spark had the Alfa Nord engine with a really strong cam chain so there were no belts to worry about , and it could do nearly 130 mph and handled better than the V6 due to the lighter weight at the front. It didn't have quite the "Go" of the V6 as it had 60 bhp less. I'd have another one tomorrow if I could find the right car.

True....but the rear fender on the passenger side by the fuel filler door is notorious for rusting...a good example will be clean here if well maintained.....

"Do you like depreciation? I have just the thing for you.....". I do like the 164 though! Some of the legendary refinement at 3:35 when he comes to a halt, idles like a cammed up Ford V8...nice!

I ran my two TS 164s to about 100,000 miles. No problems with either. I bought a ten year old 164 V6 Super with 140,000 miles on it. It had a few faults, but nothing I couldn't fix at weekends and it never let me down. You just need to maintain an Alfa Romeo properly and it will not let you down. They are fantastic cars. I've also run a 75 and a 156 Sportwagon so have a bit more experience than the so called 'experts' on here.

@Antonio Farina Ah steady on there Lads, I happen to very much admire the Alfas, in fact I think they are amongst the most beautiful in their design. I was merely stating a fact that they did suffer with premature rust issues.

Did he just say low depreciation....!? LOL!! There are many things you associate Alfa Romeo with but low depreciation is not one of them! In fact I think this and the 166 that followed, although both very charming cars, were one of the fastest ways to burn money on four wheels. That ensured the remained rare and therefore different and cool in a was the German competition doesn't replicate. That said I do like the E34 BMW.

Haha … more than 25 years later, all those Alfas are rusted away, the Fords were worn out as workhorses, some Saabs ended up in a collector's hand but only the gorgeous BMW 3 series are still driven around and are a real Classic!

wow you beat me to that comment, couldnt agree more, the alpha was unreliable and had dodgy electrics. and the e33 is the only one still going and is still a classic. (the accord is still going but its not a classic)
