Well, he sticks up for Alan when he says "Can I write an essay on the reasons why I LIKE Alan?" The reason he says the above quote that you mentioned is because Rowan is using the meeting as a way to cope with Alan's leaving. So the quote isn't necessarily sticking up for Alan but more so that Rowan isn't coping in a healthy way. Really he's looking out for Rowan in that part. But yes, he does stick up for Alan sortof too.

I love that alan was supposed to be the manager at first. When at the job interviev he started the conversation on how who should be the manager but rowan just told that he will do it and that is how he got the manager role

And Alan had the manager shirt at first and didn't realize it until he willingly handed it over to Rowan when he asked to swap shirts.
