One of my favorite clips on the internet is from some Avengers-related convention, where Chris Evans is asked what Steve would do if he had the time stone (pre-Endgame obviously). He looked kind of like he didn’t want to spoil anything, but he answered that in that hypothetical situation Steve would go back to be with Peggy. IMMEDIATELY someone shouted “what about Bucky?” and the entire stadium just started chanting “Bucky! Bucky! Bucky!” I can’t for the life of me remember where this video is from, but I’ve never been so proud of a giant crowd of Chinese Avengers fans.

He doesn't need to be seen in FATWS, however that show would now look like, even if it was a conspicuouus absence from being in front of the camera I think it would have fit better than "Steve "I think today I will go to war with 100+ countries for my pal and my morals and my buddy" Rogers goes back in time because he just remembered he had a compass with a picture of Peggy and stays in the past possibly without meddling with things he knows are gonna happen including the whole ordeal of Bucky being alive and tortured"

The idea that Steve has been fixated on a woman he shared one kiss with is astounding. They had a meaningful connection, and I'm sure he'd marry her in two days if he hadn't become a Capsicle, but they'd known each other for a couple of months, and he was an Avenger for ten years. Even if we discount his frozen years, from his perspective Peggy was a very short, um, let's be generous and call it a fling, a whole decade ago. Then he learned that she'd lived a full life and had a family, and it still didn't change his desire to be with her. And don't forget that before the time travel was an option for Steve, the big straightening of his character got so ridiculous he smooched Sharon 15 minutes after finding out she was Peggy's niece. And then that dumb exchange ("That was..." - "Late.") as if to imply they'd had this strong attraction they should have acted on but had missed their chance. Bitch, where? And what about Peggy? A whole thirty years after Steve's disappearance she still had his picture on her desk? Such bullshit. You know, when Steve, who had been obsessed with giving Bucky a chance at redemption and normalcy, had left him behind with a bunch of mental health issues, not having spend a cumulative week with him, Bucky still ended up the least damaged out of the three, at least character-wise, since we're meant to believe Steve, having learned the history of the USA in the 20th century, decided to go back to the time of polio, boiled meat and no internet to live a normal, civilian life. Not to use his power to try and prevent all the US shit past 1945, but to "live in peace", whatever the fuck that means, because ten years of avenging surely earned him 70 years of deliberately ignoring all the evils of the country he once represented. Who would have thought that Natasha wouldn't be the only pointlessly murdered Avenger in Endgame?
@Lisa_Flowers3 жыл бұрын
This is the most accurately scathing critique of the ending of Endgame and it's brilliant. They really screwed over Steve's entire character arc and everything they made him stand for just so they could avoid any possibility of him being anything other than deeply and fully heterosexual. Homophobia truly is one hell of a drug.
@hakasims3 жыл бұрын
@@Lisa_Flowers I would have been able to live without Stucky being endgame (no pun intended) but the hack way they ended Steve’s arc just because Evans was leaving and they’d already given the heroic sacrifice to Tony is preposterous. But even before that they were so terrified of Steve not being completely 100% straight they botched the arc they were actually writing for him in the first place. In the MCU, Steve can’t stop being the “man out of time” and still can’t find himself in the present or relate to anyone from the 21st century. (I hate it and it’s stifling his character but whatever, it was their call to make.) Then he learns Bucky is alive, and not only does he genuinely want to save his friend, but Bucky becomes the epitome of his lost life in the past: if he can save Bucky, he can finally relate to someone and maybe find peace. Bucky is the symbol of Steve’s past and present coming together. And it becomes especially apparent when Peggy dies in Civil War: now Bucky truly is the last thread to the past because kissing a woman with Peggy’s DNA didn’t help. And then what happens at the end after Steve has saved Bucky? They literally put him on ice, and in the next three years Stucky never have a scene together, not a single one. A very awkward situation when Bucky is literally the only emotional anchor in Steve’s entire arc: now he doesn’t have one, so he becomes a secondary player in the Avengers movies while those become even more of a Tony Stark show. So of course his ending is hack and uninspired. I’ve been angry for two years. That’s my secret, Cap.
@Lisa_Flowers3 жыл бұрын
@@hakasims YES OMG. This, literally all of this. It's unforgivable how they (rightfully) crafted an entire movie around Steve and Bucky's relationship, and how Bucky plays a part in Steve's life as a tie in to his past since they're both displaced in the present, and then botch all of it. Like Steve and Bucky are not only men out of time, they're also both super soldiers who have been used as weapons by entities bigger than them. They have so many rich parallels to explore and so many contrasts, so many ways they can develop their relationship from being two Brooklyn kids who have supported each other all their lives and fought in a war together and are now these huge mythicalized entities of 'Captain America' and 'The Winter Soldier' and they threw it ALL away. Even if you don't see them as a legitimate couple, what Marvel did to their relationship and their respective characters is just kind of unforgivable. Steve became less and less of a person and more of a shallow symbol tied together by unhealthy and inexplicable attachment to a heterosexual love interest he barely even knew. And not only did they botch Steve and Bucky's characters, they also screwed Peggy over by undoing all the character development she went through moving on from Steve in season 1 of her show, and boiled her down to a prize. Like I didn't realize how angry I was until I read a fanfic that did a far better job of constructing these characters as well-rounded human beings with actual arcs than a million dollar Marvel movie ever did. Like it _could_ have been amazing, it _could_ have made sense, a person with a laptop did it, but this huge company with crack writers didn't.
@hakasims3 жыл бұрын
@@Lisa_Flowers and now Bucky has lost the same emotional achor as Steve, and he needs it even more than Steve did because he’s more displaced, more traumatized and has fewer connections to the present. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier exposed that even more with Bucky effortlessly sliding into Sam’s storyline as a supporting player but being totally lost in his own, very hastily concluded arc. Sam is a good friend but he can’t relate to Bucky on the fundamental level Steve could so he just ends up being Bucky’s therapist which is bad and shouldn’t happen because they’re friends.

Numerous regions and nations in Asia have established laws protecting same sex couples (though countries’ participation in anti-discriminatory regulations is not to the extent as the western world due to ingrained discrimination in older generations) and with notable series and movies like < the Untamed 陈情令 >, < 蓝宇 >, and < 流金岁月 > in just China alone, it seems like blaming the underrepresentation of LGBT characters in the media on Asian markets seems outdated and stereotypically derogatory at best. The “What about China?” argument simply doesn’t stand anymore.

I’d love to see Bucky finally explore who he is.. As far as the MCU goes, he’s been defined by others: Steve, Sam, Hydra. As a GenX-er, things have changed so much, what would that be like for someone who’s 106? It could be really powerful to say “it’s never too late to be yourself.”
@thedailybullshit40333 жыл бұрын
IK, I'd love for his sexuality to actually be explored. Bucky has been queercoded since his cinematic debut in 2011, being a combination of comic Bucky & Arnie Roth. He's also (in the movies) always filled in the role for Steve that is typically filled by a female love interest for every other straight guy superhero in existance: Steve's confidant, emotional support, motivation, the 1 who Steve always needs to save - it's never Peggy, it's Bucky. Not to mention giving him a traditionally "gay" style from CA:TWS up until Endgame. & yeah, it'd be really powerful to say "The old-timer can not only accept others for who they are, but he can accept himself too."

@thedailybullshit40333 жыл бұрын
@@Iainttrynadoxxmyself Unfortunately, the only evidence that comic Bucky is bisexual comes in the form of an interview with Mark Waide, the creater of the 2016 Black Widow run. He was asked about the potential romance between Bucky & Natasha that would feature in Black Widow #9, and when comparing their histories, he mentioned that, "They've both had a crush on Steve Rogers." When asked to elaborate if it was a legitamite crush or closer to when straight women say "I've got a girl crush," Waide responded that the statement was, "Open to interpretation." Unfortunately, Bucky was not actually stated to be or represented as queer in the comics, which sucks, because he's absolutely been queercoded there too.

I honestly think when Sam and Bucky rolled and landed on each other that they purposely made sure that plant perfectly covered their face; more specifically it covered their lips. I mean come on! When that happened the shot felt so off having this greenery obscure them so weirdly. It felt off to me, and I realised that the reason it did is because film and television has done the roll down the hill trope so many times, and when they land and they land on top of each other like that, you always see them being nose to nose clear as day; It's never obscured like that. So I think they 100% planned that shot so that plant would cover their lips because they KNEW how that shot would scream romantic and/or sexual tension! They knew because that's how cinema has coded the roll down the hill! It's such a code that a movie can frame it as a joke for two characters that are explicitly not meant for romance (like to men because the joke for the movie is "ha gay, two men in a sexual position ha.ha.ha..." *eye roll*) The only way that joke can work is if the audience understands what that shot means. So they knew it looked Queer. Of course they knew, so they put a plant there to make it look "straighter". I can guarantee there are bloopers/outtakes of Anthony and Sebastian making the scene more romantic and or sexual in a joking way (like going in for a kiss, some iteration of is that a gun in a pocket or you just happy to see me)

I'm honestly still waiting for asexual and nonbinary representation in the comic books or in superhero media. Trans superheroes are generally lacking but I've literally never even heard of a well rounded nonbinary superhero (apart from the godawful ones that I think was called 'snowflake' or something). And asexual or aromantic ones??? Lol where. EDIT: forgot to say that there is of course Loki (genderfluid) and I actually recall there being a nonbinary super hero (who was also muslim and wore a hijab) in the third season of Young Justice. I guess my issues with these kids of representation is that they are always in a technicality - the character is either not explcitely stated or presented as nonbinary or their identity is an extension of their powers and so it's never explored in any meaningful way. It's always 'I have powers that *technically* make me nonbinary even if I rarely claim this identity in text' and not 'I'm nonbinary person in my own right who happens to have powers that maybe have nothing to do with my identity at all'. I don't like 'technically' representation, or representation where the person is said to be nonbinary and it's just kind of a word that floats around them but doesn't inform their experience. It's like the weird just as bad counterpart of explcitely two dimensional representation that has the person be nonbinary and nothing else. Men and women superheroes aren't only men and women as an extension of their powers, they're just men and women who happen to have powers. I'd love if the same could be said for nonbinary people.

46:05 Okay, so about the Loki show: On 1 form, Loki's SEX (note: NOT HIS GENDER) was confirmed to be fluid, but this can still be read as him just being a shapeshifter. Plus, at no point in the show is he actually represented as gender fluid. So in terms of his gender identity, Loki was not properly represented. Then, there was a scene on a train in Episode 3, where Sylvie asks Loki about his previous love life, asking about any ". . . would-be princesses, or perhaps a prince?" to which Loki replies, "A bit of both." This would be fine, if it weren't for the fact that they are portraying Loki as bi, when he is in fact, pan. Not to mention that they completely undercut this by having Loki FALL IN LOVE WITH A FEMALE VARIENT OF HIMSELF IN THE VERY NEXT EPISODE, THE SAME VARIENT WHO STARTED THE DAY W/ TRYING TO KILL HIM. & I mention that she's female bc if the Varient were male or genderqueer, then they DEFINITELY wouldn't have had the 2 fall in love. So sorry, Marvel Studios. Your attempt at representation failed miserably & left me physically repulsed at the series. Ok, but here me out. They grew up together, are best friends and one of them needs help after a traumatic event that implied him being brainwashed by nazis. I'm not gonna lie, Bucky might be gay or Bi, there is a lot of subtext to explore. But your point doesn't make sense.

I especially hate how that one line in Endgame was marketed as representation for the queer community before the movie came out (same with the one-second lesbian kiss in the background in The Rise of Skywalker)

Every time Disney releases a movie they say it’s the first gay Disney character when it’s not confirmed or it’s two seconds long

i can't believe you didn't bring up larry trainor from doom patrol!! he was a great example of a comic character that was straight in the original but was made gay in the show. i think it was incredibly well done

13:45 in a interview for Agents of Shield season 3, Chloe Bennet talked about how she hoped the inhumans storyline would help LGBTQIA+ teens. The actress playing a superhero openly talked about the link between realising and coming out as an inhuman and coming out as LGBTQIA+ !!!!

I'm still so salty that there was no proper LGBTQ representation in Agents of Shield...

Great, now I'm back to how pissed I was when they killed off Maria. In one shitty sentence they killed any hope of a good representative relationship with her and Carol :(

Most of my close friend group are bisexual including myself and there are 1 or 2 who are 100% straight, it's odd how that somehow happens

I would really love to see a video from Rowan about The Old Guard, which is a perfect example of a smaller IP doing the exact thing that we want from the MCU. It's worth talking about when representation is done well, especially in genres like fantasy action/adventure.

overall the comics have been pushing for more and more diversity and I can't wait for the movies to catch up even a little. At he very least some of the DC animated stuff has been starting to include more diverse characters (where are my Harley Quinn animated stans at)

You talking about the American Queer as Folk messed with my head so much. Completely believe I'd watched the wrong show or made up Stuart and Vince in my head.

17:50: Of course, the fact that superheroes _already_ (tend to) fight to protect the status quo and uphold the law leads to the conflicting reading that Captain America is basically fighting for the rights of allegorical police to do whatever they think is necessary to promote "law and order" without any accountability. The perils of giving your marginalized-group-allegory great power is that they can read as people with power instead of marginalized ones.

As a 'not straight' I feel weirdly indirectly insulted by being told apparently I'm supposed to have gay magnetism and get plenty of LGBT friends. Where are they? I feel cheated!

@@lued123 that's rough! There was a lot about those films that wasn't the best so I can't say I'm that disappointed they didn't make a third one but that's a shitty reason behind it.

I remember reading that a writer wanted to make Gambit bi in his run and the higher ups told him they didn't want to change a pre-existing character so fundamentally. And I was like... you do know who Gambit is, right?

I'm still so freaking nervous about MCU doing Young Avengers, and how straight-washed it may turn out to be. Billy and Teddy are my favorite characters and it'd hurt so much as a gay man who grew up with them, to see them misrepresented. At least they're badass husbands ruling over space in the comics.

James Somerton also talked a LOT about the gay power couple in young avengers, I def recommend watching that too if you like this video

You didn't mention that Wiccan was kinda sorta in Wandavision. If Wanda is to bring back her children, which the post credit scene seemed to suggest, we could finally have a gay character. Also, Wanda is supposedly going to feature heavily in Doctor Strange 2. Maybe we'll get something there?
