Whole tone is totally very useful musically!!!! Your description word "monstrous" is perfect!!! 19th Century Russian composers used the whole tone scale and octatonic scale (like 2 dim7 arps a fret apart) to depict monsters and magical things. Larry Lalonde of Primus throws it in occasionally order to create a sense of weirdness. Buckethead uses it in his horror/sci-fi/gamer music too, often in the form of augmented chords. I think Exercise 3 is my favorite of the bunch!!! :)

These legato phrases remind me of The Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing by guitarist Joe Satriani. Your legato is smoother than his. And yeah I think your legato is as good as Allan Holdsworth. Just one question though, do you have to practice with a metronome for building guitar speed?

Hi Rowan Cool teaching ! By the way, what's this nice light music piece that we can hear at the beginning ? Is it yours and is it available ?

Man, I always have problems with my legato. My pinky rings the other chords when pulling it off, should i try to bar other chords with my first finger? Or train my pinky so he won't do that anymore? Ty, great lesson!

interesting...it kind of makes a sweep picking-like effect without sweep picking...i don't think i've seen that done quite like that before...i'll bet the next step is to add tapping so you get even more notes per string than 4. interesting name for the chord too "sus 2"...i would call it an "add 9"...whatever, it doesn't really matter as long as you put the 2 (or the 9) in there to make the sound... far out :)

Hi man, the piece at the start is from a tune of mine called Mount Olympus. You can find it on my Sound Cloud page. Cheers Rowan

Yes, more Satriani than Holdsworth perhaps. No, my legato is definitely not as good as Holdsworth but it's not too bad! Yes, I use a metronome and drum machine constantly to develop and maintain my chops. Cheers Rowan

Hello, what effects setup should i have to help with the legato clarity and power?
@RowanJParker
@RowanJParker 6 жыл бұрын
Devilisk Well, honestly the clarity and articulation comes from the left hand and effects are not going to compensate for that if it's lacking. Notes should be audible with a flat clean sound without any effects whatsoever. However, having said that any effects that cause compression will help so overdrive, a compressor, and possibly a little delay will smooth things out for you. Don't overdo it though, remember effects are there to enhance your playing, not to cover up shoddy technique. The fundamentals have to be present or it's rather like putting lipstick on a pig. Get it sounding good with a clean tone then it should sound magnificent with a bit of fairy dust tastefully sprinkled on the top. Hope this helps. Cheers Rowan

It sounds like your problem may be muting as much as anything else. Look for a video on my channel called Rock Guitar Fundamentals - Muting. This could help you I think. I would suggest that you don't barre with your index finger as you need to move the digits independently. Check out my current video series I Love Legato for more cool licks. Cheers Rowan
