I recently paid 3 times as much for a US made weightlifting belt that looks like a import belt. The difference is that my belt is custom made to my specs and of vastly superior quality both in fit and finish but also material. This is not just my opinion but also the opinion of people who have taken the time to compare the two. This is how we get people to buy American, better value, we can not beat them on price. My belt has no logo and casual onlookers will never know the difference but I do and I am the one who put down my money.

Many years ago Japan copied the Singer sewing machine and it was better than the ones made in the USA. They got into a bit a trouble for the copying business but Singer was really interested as to why the Japanese machines were so good. Just about everything those folks made was quality. Their cars were excellent. It all came down to them really caring about and taking pride in their products. It is a cultural thing. That is what needs to be brought out in more American workers. A job is more than a paycheck.

I'm studying economics right now in university, and it becomes more and more apparent to me how economic realities are not intuitive. Knowing how to run a business does not translate into knowing how to achieve optimal economic outcomes for an entire society. People are economically illiterate. It's a fact. Look it up if you weren't aware of that. The vast majority of economists agree that trade wars of any kind, whether that's products or services (jobs), lead to lower average standards of living of both nations. It matters very little to me that 73% of the participants in that poll support Trump's actions regarding American labor. Do you trust what 73% of Americans say about the effects of a new drug? This is where the democratic process breaks down- when majorities are used to decide issues that have nothing to do with civic issues, but with matters of science and economics.

This is only my personal opinion but while I did everything the company asked of me and more, the union protected the slackers in my crew more than me. Mike, the trucking industry has seen wages stagnate for thirty years. This happens solely because foreign born drivers work so cheaply the entire industry suffers depressed wages. OTR drivers have pretty horrible jobs. Gone from home for extended periods of time, forced to work 70 hour weeks, week in and week out, living in a truck sleeper, maybe 7 feet by eight feet, eating ridiculously expensive unhealthy food, driving in the absolute worst weather conditions, putting their very lives on the line. They do this for little more than minimum wage when the number of hours worked is part of the equation. Why? Foreign born drivers. The construction business in my part of the country has an identical problem. Abysmally low wages for skilled and semi-skilled jobs, again because foreign born workers will work for next to nothing. Of course you'll argue that the consumer will have to pay if the wages are increased. WRONG. The business owners POCKET the "found" money acquired from low wages. The savings are NOT passed on to the consumer. The same thing is happening in the European Union, with Brexit getting the blame. B.S. It is ALL about the rich getting richer on the backs of the people who EARN the rich their fortunes. The nonsense about "racism" being behind peoples problem with illegal immigration is simply a way of steering the conversation away from the REAL problem. Try earning a living framing houses in Texas. For that matter, try living in a house framed by people without a clue as to how to measure and cut boards for a good fit. Compound angles on roof rafters?? Surely you jest. I take it you heard about the "cheap" sheetrock imported from China. Cheap that is until the homebuyers had to replace it because it was making them, their children and pets sick. I generally agree with you. I'm 100% behind vocational education. After all I had no college, and without a skill I'd have been poor indeed. We have a problem with our young people's approach to jobs not "white collar" in most people's eyes. So yeah, we're partly to blame for allowing the influx of workers sabotaging wages in many industries. And NO, McDonalds workers do not deserve fifteen bucks an hour. It's a no skill job without any effort required to get it and keep it. If after a week you can't work the back and a register you're a moron. A welder, plumber, carpenter, electrician, mechanic doesn't GET his/her skills in a week. And therein lies the rub. You spend the money and time to ACQUIRE a skill and are forced, because of unfair competition to work for next to nothing. That's wrong. I'm long retired, but concerned for the folks, white, black, brown and yellow who were born here, did the things required to obtain a skill and end up on the short end of the stick because HONCHO'S hire foreign born workers for pennies on the dollar. Somebody needs to stand up for the MOTIVATED American worker. The bums, ***** em. But there are a couple of hundred thousand underpaid truck drivers on our roads. Many tradesmen working for half or less their worth. Maybe new laws or presidential pronouncements aren't the answer. But a guy like you, articulate and with a following might make a difference. I can't.

The Australian government started a "buy Australian" campaign when i was a kid in the eighties. It had an effect. I certainly consider and look at labels to see where things are made. Things such as clothing, there is no option though. Everything is made overseas. So, sometimes it's a question of economics, not loyalty. Products that simply cannot be made because of the price expectations of the consumer, how can we get around that? I think it's important to focus on what a country can do really well, and protect that from foreign workers being imported to make it cheaper. Here, its mining. We do it really well. So, these jobs should stay here. That way we can maintain the trade balance with other countries.

I was at a small get together and was asked where I got my blue jeans, as they had the "perfect" wear and holes in them. I simply said "I bought new pants and then I worked in them". Eh. Loss of American manufacturing jobs is a symptom, not a root cause, and failing to address the root cause while forcing a symptom away can lead to worse symptoms arising when dealing with economic issues. People choose foreign labor because they perceive the value to be better. The value is perceived to be better because of lower costs for similar quality. This lower cost is caused by worse working conditions, which we, Americans, do not tolerate. Thus, the best way to make an even cost playing field is to sign enforceable treaties globally that set the same minimum safe/humane labor standards globally as we have in the U.S.. Only then, will the competitive mantra "may the best product win" be viable and meritorious at the global level.

One thing that could help is get rid of labor unions. Let employers compete for employees. Stop unions from holding up work because the insane amount of starting pay and benefits aren't enough. Example. United Auto Workers and GM. I'm pretty sure that union is the reason GMs are so expensive and lack the quality of Toyota. GM and Chrysler have to cut corners to SAVE (not make) their profits because their labor costs keep going up and up every negotiation cycle, yet the quality keeps declining. Make wages and retention performance based rather than seniority based. Same thing with the teachers unions. So I would say get rid of unions all together. They've long since served their purpose and now are trying to create new purpose for themselves.

One thing I disagree with Mike on (I agree with most of what he says) is that you can't form business policy with an end result in mind, you certainly can and must set goals and factor in how government can help not hinder business to accomplish those goals. Most of what I'd like to see is a government in this country that stays the heck out of regulating business except in the case of graft or consumer protection. This country is great because of business innovation without government interference and over taxation. Left Dems want MORE government control, everyone else wants less.

Went into a store recently and wanted to buy American. The majority was made in China the rest in Mexico. I asked the manager and he said 99%was Mexico and China, I looked around and did find one thing made in US, it was a toilet brush, so I bought it. The scale and umbrella both died after the first use! I would rather pay more and have it last. The companies who make these inferior products don't even care they are of poor quality, because they make so much money !

The biggest problem is retailers /suppliers Mark up American made products more than they do Chinese products. Chinese products they buy in large container loads and They don’t want That inventory sitting around. So they don’t Mark it up as much. (Sell it cheaper) it sells faster because it’s cheaper. When they buy American made they don’t have to buy container loads of it. So they add on a higher mark up. they know A lot of people pay a little more for better product and if it sells it sells. Because most people take the cheapest they don’t sell as much. Just go to Dollarama in Canada and you’ll see a lot of Canadian made products they don’t mark up as much and they sell a crap load of it and that’s why they sell it so cheap because they don’t market up as much. I purchase Products from the United States and Canada. One manufacture I purchased products from prices are reasonably in line with stuff made in China. I’m talking about maybe a 10 percent difference in Price. (At the wholesale level) when you buy the same quantities.) What I mean is when you buy one. when you buy 100 or when you buy 1000. I come across Products that I can buy in the US for $.50 Made in China for $ .40. Product made in US will sell for seven dollars. The product made in China is selling for two dollars. I’m talking in Canadian stores. But I see products made in the United States sell for less money in Canada then in United States.GAF Shingles at Home Depot in Canada. $24.95 Calgary Alberta. Canadian dollars. US$19. Saint Paul Minnesota. $27.90 US. That works out to $36.27 Canadian dollars they are made in St. Paul Minnesota. Try that on for size. The wholesale price in Canada is. The same as the retail price. Home Depot in the US made their beginnings In selling cheap Chinese junk. And made money and ripping you off one made in US products.

I grew up in southwest Louisiana in the 70s and my blue jeans looked like that most of the time, working on the farm, mechanic shop , 4 wheeling. You want to know what’s funny ...I ordered the wrong jeans from Marshals . I received pre distressed $200 jeans instead of a non distressed pair .The jeans were made by Diesel industry’s . When I went to return them for store credit , they told me “ sorry but these were obviously used”. Had to ask for a manager who “straightened out “the dumb tramp that was customer service at the time who had major embarrassment gave me a full refund of the non sale price of $249.$50 profit ha.

I say the US government should prioritize american goods and services but only because they get to tax the money they pay for it in a sense giving them a massive hidden discount. If you can buy some product from company A for 100M or company B for 120M but you get a 40% refund from company B then they are cheaper. The government should factor the tax refund into the price and then buy whatever is the best quality for the price.
