Mike Rowe Wears Trump’s Robe, Fights a Drone, and Solves the Labor Shortage

What's life like for Mike Rowe without a network television show?
Since "Somebody's Gotta Do It" is no longer on CNN, Rowe has had his privacy violated by a drone, the former host of "Dirty Jobs" survived the rumors of his own death swirling about the internet, and in the home stretch of an ugly presidential election, he worries more than ever about unemployment, the skills gap, and a widespread loss of meaning in American life.
Yet Rowe himself remains more popular than ever. Days after Rowe read a letter from his mother detailing how she lost her purse at Wal-Mart, the post went hyperviral. It was seen by over 100 million people - "a third of the country!" he exclaims. "I've never seen anything like it," Rowe tells Reason TV, "I've talked to people at Facebook who said they've never seen anything like it."
Rowe has also found a way to turn C.R.A.P - that's Collectables, Rare and Precious - into philanthropy. His auction of a swanky Trump Tower bathrobe, signed by The Donald himself, fetched a cool $16,000 on eBay. The money then trickled down from the alleged billionaire to The Mike Rowe Works Foundation, which funds "work ethic scholarships" that provide out-of-luck workers with valuable skills for the modern economy.
Nick Gillespie caught up with Mike Rowe in Nashville, Tennessee to chat about his affection for the Second Amendment, his adventures in podcasting, the 2016 election, the secret to extracting semen from a prize racehorse, and more.

Mike Rowe has the key to happiness. Just listen. I'm grew up on a farm in rural Georgia. I watched my Dad castrate calves and throw the stones over the fence for our Boxer dogs to fight over. I know the sound of a pack of beagles running a rabbit. I listened to my grandfather tell of Wyoming sheepherders castrating lambs with their teeth(as Mike said here) when nobody would believe him. I got my own shotgun for Christmas when I was eleven years old. I've hoed a garden numerous times in my formative years. Had the pleasure of taking a salt shaker into the garden and eat ripe tomatoes from the vine. Watched my Dad plow behind a mule (only once). I know the feeling of fresh cow patties squishing between my barefoot toes. Playing in the pastures and forests all day, day-after-day I had the pleasure of stopping to eat wild plums right from the trees and wild blackberries right from the vine. I smoked dried wild grapevines and chewed wild rabbit tobacco for a grown-up thrill. I took baths in number 3 washtubs in a corner of the kitchen. My Dad always got to bathe first and we (Mom and five kids) reused his bathwater. We had to share because the bathwater had to be heated in a kettle on the stove. For more than a year we all used the outdoor johnny house with the old Sears or Montgomery Wards catalogs for toilet paper. If TSHTF I can survive without any modern-day conveniences. I flunked out of college at the end of the end of the first term. I enlisted with a guaranteed job in the USAF and learned telecommunications electronics. After being laid-off from thirty one years of employment at Verizon with a healthy severance package, I decided to retire with no debt at all. My wife handled our finances during my forty year telecommunications career and even our credit cards were paid in full. To this day our balances are paid before we get the bills. We live in a small wooden frame house with aluminum siding we intend to remodel if the economy ever improves. We live within our means and always have. Mike Rowe has the key to happiness. Just listen.

Caught this episode on a random u tube feed six years later and not much has changed at least not for the better. I’ve seen Mike Rowe many times since then but watching this episode I must say that Mike is truly a modern day philosopher. And that is the classical meaning of the word. A friend of knowledge. I think that a lack of understanding of what philosophy is is what is missing now. Knowledge is what makes us human. Without knowledge nothing else in our present life could be possible. The reason that they are pushing the driverless trucking industry is because there is a 75,000 trucker shortage here in the US. As of today, where I live, if you go to trucking school and survive the first day, you will have job offers for when you get out.

mike is so right about jobs..i did not stay in the culinary industry for over 30 years now because the money is great.....wages in that industry have actually decreased..i made more on the average 20 years ago than i do today...but because i devoted myself to the industry and worked my ass off..i got a couple really great jobs on the pay side of things. but i wasn't happy..had no time for my family and phone would ring every day off and just wasn't what i really thought it was going to be.. in that i digress...but i can go anywhere in the country now and between my printing industry exp when i was young and my culinary exp.. i can pretty much find a job just about anywhere, because i learned the skills and devoted myself to an industry that very few get rich from, but it is a constant and allowed me too raise a family and have a pretty good life and i have made my contribution to the working class of this country that keeps the machine working...learn a trade kids...culinary, heavy equipment operator, hvac technician and road safety/flagging are great ones because there will always be a demand for people skilled in these trades and you can make decent to excellent money and have a good life....work hard America..

The unintended consequence of tariffs to make US workers more competitive with imported goods is retaliatory tariffs on exported goods to make US workers less competitive in those countries... The Smoot Hawley tariffs made the great depression significantly worse, and more tariffs now would probably hurt the economy more than it would help it.

I'm not okay with other countries taxing US goods when they can ship goods to the US tax free. It's a bailout for all these foreign countries. If they are going to tax US goods, then we must tax them the same rate. If they want to stop taxing our exports then we'll stop taxing their imports. This will result in more jobs here in the US and it'll allow other countries to create products better and cheaper than what we can create in the US. Competition is a dirty job, but it's not a dirty word. Our US politicians have sold out the American worker. They have said to foreign countries, "We'll give you our jobs, you buy our treasury bonds." Our politicians have sold off American jobs to finance Big Government. That is not a good deal for the American worker and they are finally mad enough to vote Trump.

The trick is to figure out how you can extract equal amounts of tariffs from them. Just putting a tariff on the same goods generally wouldn't end up being equal. The other key to a civilized exchange in society is not being the first one to throw a punch. Retaliatory tariffs are fine, even on differing goods, but putting tariffs in place against a country that has none on your goods is unhealthy for the economy. Heck, putting retaliatory tariffs hurt the economy as well, but can be necessary. In iterated prisoners dilemmas, co-operative, retaliatory, forgiving strategies tend to do the best overall across many competitors. They won't come out ahead one-on-one against a purely punitive opponent, but they beat those opponents in total points scored because of their cooperative nature with those others who are cooperative. The benefits of trade and specialization are immense, and if you go purely to putting tariffs on everyone even if they haven't struck first, then you're doing yourself and your workers a tremendous disservice.

To get familiar or more of a safe feeling, just go take a safety course. Ask to take a strict one and just go. Go out to the range either indoor or outdoor and just practice. Start with a .22 and work up. I was shooting competitive shotguns since middle school (12 gauge almost instantly). The most you have to be afraid of is simple, easy, muscle memory firearm safety. You should never get complacent with it. Other than that, its a fun and enjoyable sport to just go unload lead at a target, paper, steel, clay, etc. edit. an easy acronym is TAB+1. T - Treat every firearm as if it were loaded (always always check to make sure its clear whether handing to another or receiving). A - Always keep the muzzle/barrel pointed in a safe direction (pistol/rifle down and away from anyone and down range. shotguns in the air above the tallest persons head and or down range) B - Be sure of your target AND beyond (do not want a stray round going past the target and hitting someone or something). +1 - Finger off the trigger until ready to fire (this isn't Hollywood, keep it off the guard even. What happens when you trip with something in your hand? you squeeze the thing you're holding.) Extra Tip - Never trust a safety. the safety is a device that will inevitably fail. (old shotgun I had if you squeezed a bit harder, the trigger it would switch off)

Greg Evans if you have a Concealed Weapons License (CWL) you can carry a loaded gun most places, though often not schools, federal buildings, hospitals, airplanes and a few others. If you put the gun somewhere in your house other than locked up and you have kids in the house, that seems to violate the law.

This is one of the BEST interviews/conversations I have ever watched on KZbin, or anywhere else, for that matter. Maybe because my father was a carpenter/woodworker all his life after serving four years in WWII (he enlisted at age 19) or becasue I've made my lving as a welder, hospital orderly, carpenter, salesman, janitor, groom on a Tennessee Walking Horse stables (your story about the horse breeding had special meaning to me; been there done that or close to it), LSW w/Master's degree+, etc, etc, ad infinitum, now retired age 73. Mike Rowe (I'm a "Mike" also) represents the epitome of what we used to call "The American Way" and also represents what total immersion in ANY job, however menial, when approached with a "can do, will do or die" attitude. He's a product of the product, and honest hard physical work is the product.Work can give us everything in life, all we have to do is surrender our ego, put on the gloves, the mask, and the boots, get out of the bleachers and onto the playing field.
