Wow, I'm glad I found you. I recently picked up rowing as it is the most underutilized machine at my gym. I love your videos and I'm improving with your guidance. Thanks for sharing all this wonderful info. Now I see the buff guys rowing incorrectly, and I feel like a pro!!!!

Been using various models of the concept2 since 1998. Bought a second hand model C around 20 years ago. Some years life got in the way, other years i put in 100s of 1000s metres. Other than upgrading to a new monitor, its still going strong after 3.5m+ metres. It's the most honest bit of kit. You can't lie to that monitor. 60+ years old now and hoping to add many more millions of metres. Great videos for encouraging use of this great exercise machine.

I use the ERG app but am wondering if there is an easy way to get my monthly split average without making a spreadsheet? On another note, I have MS and can barely walk but I can row! It's a lifesaver getting my body to move. Thanks for the very helpful videos!

Thank you Austin, just started to workout in a gym for the first time in my life as I used to fast walk, yoga and hike for fitness. However, I live in Ireland and the weather is terrible so getting outside regularly without getting soaked to the core isn't possible!! Your videos have been really useful and I'm really enjoying rowing as it's more interesting than running/cycling! I'm 47 and heading to India later this year to do a yoga teacher training course and wanted a little more stamina and strength in my body before facing all the 20-somethings there!! My family are tall too and I'm the midget at 5' 8" (nephew is 6' 7" and plays rugby professionally) Off to yoga now then to the gym with more knowledge about my rowing workout so thank you 💕

I do not necessarily disagree with you on this subject, however at lower intensities (2:30/500m or slower) Watts starts to vary less than your split because of the non-linear nature of the conversion formula. The biggest reason to use split over watts is the relevance of the unit when you row a distance-based piece (i.e. 6k, 2k) as it says something about how long it will take you.
@trainingtall6 жыл бұрын
A good insight! thanks, Wouter!
@Xuanpa6 жыл бұрын
My oppinion on this (im a newbie rower and might be very wrong though) is that split/500m helps you keeping constant paces, which is really good to know your capabilities on each distance (are you able to keep 2:00/500 in a 1k or 2k? can you row at 1:50 if distance is actually 500m?) I suppose that doesn't mean much for veteran rowers who know themselves really well, but its great when you are learning to keep your pace. The watts graph plus the s/m number are great when you want to train your stroke; if you can manage to generate a rather flat graph (all bars about the same height) that means you apply the same force on every stroke, which seems quite difficult but convenient to achieve. Again, when you are a beginner its easy to apply a lot of force on some strokes and weaker ones when you start to fatigue, all that data helps to keep everything under control.

hey, man! First of all, thank you very very much for your channel! I've seen almost every single video and I've been learning a lot with you! I've been making pilates and it really helps me to use my core and you gave nice tips that stopped some back pain I had when I was rowing! Now tell me, I have the same watch you have. But the machine I use does no have support for it, though I'd like to use more of it's features for rowing. Do you know some apps I could use to row? And also, I am a beginner and amateur, but I'd like to improve my resistance and rowing results. Which statistics should I follow to measure my results? Thanks again and sorry for any mistake, not a native EN speaker here!
@trainingtall6 жыл бұрын
Hey Carlos! Thanks for the kind words - I am glad you've enjoyed the videos, too! I actually use a different heart rate monitor while I row for workouts. The watch you see here is my casual use FItBit. One of the best ways to improve your rowing performance is to practice steady-state heart rate training. Using a heart rate monitor that pairs with a rowing machine will allow it to display on screen which is awesome! As far as resistance training, I would focus primarily on big compound movements such as deadlifts and squats! P.S. Your English is very good :) Let me know if you have any other questions!

What's your highest output in split and watt/calories ?
@gennafer3 жыл бұрын
Doesn't it help you stay more consistent with power on each stroke if you use watts, if you use split you could be going hard every 5th stroke or something and isn't that just inconsistency?

I just sub'd. A video request: I'm rowing to burn fat and would love to learn how to build up to eventually doing HIIT: What sort of aerobic base should we build up to before doing HIIT, i.e. 15 to 30 min. steady-state rowing, and at what pace? And your recommendations on HIIT progression.

Watts and Cals change at every stroke and that’s indeed annoying. But split time may not tell how much you’ve really worked because it doesn’t take into account the drag factor, or does it? Isn’t there a way to have the average Watts or Cals of an internal (eg last 10 strokes, last minute, last 50mt)?

So how do I figure out the distance that I row?
@donmckinney40915 жыл бұрын
This is great info but for a guy 66yrs old in pretty good shape what speed or split should I be looking for? and I'm to keep it consistent at that number?
@trainingtall5 жыл бұрын
It depends on how tall you are, how much you weigh, how much experience you have... all of these factors play in to "how fast" you should go! I would focus instead on just trying to improve that steady number each and every day!
@rickdalbey60095 жыл бұрын
I am going on 69. I have been lifting weights and rowing for 3 1/2 years. I just set my resistance at a medium setting and concentrate on a correct stroke. I lift every other day. On lifting days I row for only 5 minutes, just to get blood flowing in my muscles before lifting. If you row extended periods before lifting it steals your strength from lifting and blunts any gains. On off days I row for 20-30 minutes. Seems to work for me.
