Hey Paulie. Haha. I'm on Aram in some way. Cool. I like it. The point is that a drill of what ever type is designed to exaggerate something so that you can learn a new habit, and in our case it' was putting the blade in as part of the recovery rather than the drive. Once you have that mastered you can reduce your backsplash to a minimum to maximize efficiency.

Hello Aram. Kevin S coached me to make a back splash at the catch , to get the best catch. I noticed this gent is doing exactly that . Regards. Paul.

yes :) well spotted. What would you do if a camera were next to you? I would have done the inefficient but supposedly beautiful thing - creating back splash.

How would you coach a sweep 4+ or 8+ to get closer to the water, just before the catch, at higher rates rather than at low rate steady state paddle?

Taping straws to the side of the boat with the top section inches marked off at the correct height, then get the rowers to touch the straws above that marker just as they get to the catch - it gives them something visible to aim for with their hands

I usually do high speed recovery / super slow drive drills. The objective is to keep the waterflow / bost flow steady, despite the exagerated recovery.

Sorry Aram, respectfully, but you don't understand the mechanics of the blade entry. Any braking effect that the blades cause is much smaller than the braking effect of the pressure on the stretcher. Look at what happens to an RP3 at the catch - the machine moves back 5x faster than the rower moves forwards. You also neglect how the blade is creating lift - at this point it is working like a wing, not a bucket. I am sure you have achieved great success with your crews and are an excellent coach, but this is despite, not because of your understanding of boat mechanics.

I politely disagree but respect your opinion. The RP3 has little to do with the hydrodynamics of a racing shell and second, the main idea of moving the boat during the drive phase is not blade propulsion but boat propulsion past a stabilised blade. The shovel shape of a blade allows for pressure differences which in turn lead to a horizontally locked blade, provided vertical motion can be excluded as early as possible.
