OK, I have to jump in. Criminally underrated? Not just underrated, which every movie seems to be if I were to believe KZbin comments, but criminally so? It had a great critical response when released. Steve Martin was nominated for a Golden Globe and won a Writer's Guild of America award for his screenplay which is the best you could hope for since it's voted on by other writers. It made a decent amount of money and through the years has been considered a classic with it frequently being listed on top 100 lists for comedies. It's rated the correct amount. I do not know how you came up with anything otherwise.
@capamfan70603 жыл бұрын
Hello discovered your channel with this one. Just so you know some of the more random elements like the fight with the tennis racquet is from the source material. This movie is an updated adaptation of Cyrano de Bergerac a play from 1897 set in the late 1600. Cyrano was a real person. The play is actually a tragedy. It was also recently adapted into a teen comedy called Roxy. Love the Channel.

Savinien de Cyrano de Bergerac was a real French novelist, playwright, epistolarian, and duelist in the early 1600s. A play, Cyrano de Bergerac, was written in 1897. Few people know this, but it is in our minds with films in 1950 with José Ferrer and 1990 with Gérard Depardieu each playing Cyrano in a drama as he was in the 1600s. Using the play as their basis, his love interest was a Roxanne. This movie in 1987 took a comedic approach using the same ideas from the Cyrano play and put it into modern times.

Maybe this is not the best movie ever but it was performed with dignity, and in those days Steve Martin was at the top of his interpretive histrionism, for which he fits perfectly into the role of an intelligent man with a physical handicap who was accepting life with humor.

The Steve Martin comedy movie "Roxanne" is based on a classic story "Cyrano De Bergerac". Cyrano is an excellent swordsman, a literate romantic and is cursed with a huge nose. He provides the romantic words for a handsome, but clueless man. The woman Cyrano loves is named Roxane.

This movie, Roxanne, is based on a 1950 movie Cyrano de Bergerac. Jose Ferrer, who played the lead character Cyrano won the Academy Award for Best Actor. Only difference, "Cyrano" was a romantic drama complete with the bar scene where our hero skillfully dispatches an insulting dolt. Jose was the first Hispanic actor (Puerto Rico) to win an Oscar.Absolutely loved your reaction. Bar scene in Cyrano (1950) "Respectful: Sir, I recognize in you a man of parts. A man of - prominence." The "stripper" movie you were thinking about is "Striptease" with Demi Moore (a fun movie).
@Widdershins. Жыл бұрын
Actually it's based on a 19th century play, which in turn was based on the real life of a man who lived in the 17th century. There have been many film adaptations of the play, but the best one will always be the '80s BBC production starring Derek Jacobi. No one can change my mind. Much as I liked Peter Dinklage in the role from the 2022 "Cyrano," Jacobi still breaks your heart harder.

My drama geek side is coming out on this one, as I played the character this movie is based on. This is based on the play 'Cyrano De Bergerac' (1897) written by Edmond Rostand. It was a French play about a real man and set in the 1600s as the play mentions Musketeers, D'Artagnan, Cardinal Richelieu (who ruled France and King Louis XIII), and part of the play takes place during France's war with Spain during the Siege of Arras. In the play, they play up Cyrano's nose, and actors who play Cyrano always have to figure out how big to make the nose. The play is considered one of the great classical plays, as it is written in verse...it is done in Britain on a regular basis. There is a wonderful film from 1950 starring Jose Ferrer (the uncle of George Clooney) as Cyrano that won him the Oscar for Best Actor. There is also a brilliant French film from 1990 that starred the great French actor Gerard Depardieu (who was nominated for an Oscar). Steve Martin is Cyrano, Daryl Hannah is Roxane, and Rick Rossovich is Christian...the love triangle of the play. Steve Martin just adapted the story for a more modern audience...and did so brilliantly. The 20 Insults scene is a major part of the play, but in the play, it leads to a sword duel...during which Cyrano composes a poem as he fights. This film has a happier ending than the play...Cyrano dies, but he dies in Roxane's arms...knowing the truth about his love for her.

I don't get it either - it's such a well done movie and not a stereotypical teen romance. Most people just think of the boombox scene, but they think it's an example of stalking because of some mandela effect where everyone thinks Lloyd was standing outside Diane's window. But if you look at the background he's actually in the parks near her house and not trespassing at all. I think Lloyd Dobler has been done wrong and he and Diane actually have one of the healthiest teen romances on film.

@@carm3d Agreed. I believe it was probably also a reference to some of Steve’s stand-up or his Knotts Berry Farm days or similar. Every now and then in one of his movies you get some random bit of dialogue that feels like it’s an in-joke. Like in Planes, Trains and Automobiles when he tries to get people to sing the Three Pennies song. I think it’s a deliberate choice that harks back to some part of his past career. I’ve got his autobiography Born Standing Up. It’s a great read.

Steve Martin is a comedic genius. He was The comedian in the 70's. He would sell out arenas the same as rock concerts. He was a philosophy major but switched to theater. He is a master banjo player as well. He did a lot of comedies, a lot of tv. A great movie not many people have seen, though not exactly a rom-com was "Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid." It was truly an experimental movie as it was in Black and white in 1985 and took cuts from movies in the 40's to make a Phillip Marlowe type comedic Film Noir. So it starred him, Carl Reiner, Humphrey Bogart, Rachel Ward, Alan Ladd, Barbara Stanwyck, Burt Lancaster, Ingrid Bergman, Veronica Lake, Cary Grant... If you like old movies it's a good watch.

My intro to the story of Cyrano de Bergerac was at age 13 with the 1950 Hollywood adaptation. The film itself was flawed with the exception of Jose Ferrer's amazing performance as Cyrano, one which earned him the Best Actor Oscar that year. I recommend that you seek it out for his performance. Also, just recently, I saw the French film, Cyrano, My Love, which is a fictionalized account about Edmond Rostand and how he came to write and stage his famous play in 1897. It is in French with English subtitles, and is a wonderful story. Thank you, Cassie, for your reactions. A tip of my hat to you for your honesty and sensitivity.
