When you do the buttonhole on the sewing machine use a water soluble or tear away stabilizer on the top and bottom of the fabric it helps the knit smoothly feed through the machine, keeps the zigzag even , and will stabilize the buttonhole so it doesn’t stretch. If you are really concerned that the tear away may show, use water soluble stabilizer. You can also use tissue paper . Any remaining tissue paper that remains after tearing it away from the stitches will dissolve after a good soak or two.

the hybrid drop shoulder modification may be just the answer I have been looking for. So many beautiful sweater patterns that I dismiss because they are drop shoulder. It is not a good look for those of us “teapots” (short and stout, plus add large busted). What do you think?

Your videos are so helpful!! I am making a cardigan for my husband - it is seamed and I want to increase the armhole. Instruction say the knit for 9” on the back and 7 “ on each front. If I had 1” to each instruction - it should add about 12 rows total. When I make the sleeve do I make it 12 rows longer including additional increases in pattern? I have never made this kind of modification before and I’m unsure about making sure the sleeve will still match the armholes. I love your videos so much and you always help me understand!! Thank you and please keep making them!!!!

excellent Casual Friday. I shall be practising both cast ons you demonstrated - both are new to me. I'm looking forward too to hearing your thoughts on the buttons; it sounds intriguing. I'd probably just be lazy and reuse the old ones off the original! :)

The old buttons were a good match for the original sweater color, but not so much the new one. Plus, I like a button with a little pizazz! :-)

I saw that same clip and thought it was darling. I do like the idea of doing the button band in red and gray that would add a nice accent against all the gray.

Yes! We are kindred spirits, I love reverse engineering from screenshots or a quick sketch of the sweater sitting in front of you on the train. I have to alter all my clothes anyway... Might as well adjust the details too!

@@calisamgalHello Knidred spirit, I don't sketch so much but I tell the person I am a knitter and ask to take a photo, they are usually honored I like their clothes, so it works !!!

I was so puzzled with the decrease using the cable needle until I realized it's the same as using a two prong transfer tool on a knitting machine (which I did a lot of), really easy that way.

Thank you for sharing and demonstrating such valuable information of your reverse engineering cardigan. I learnt how to do double decrease or the cable style decrease in armhole today. Thank you so much once again.

Wow…what a fun design challenge! I just finished a cardigan with a vertical 1x1 rib with vertical buttonholes. I opted to knit it up with an extra stitch on either side intended to curl around for a fuller, finished edge, and allowing for a selvage mattress stitch seam to the body. It worked really well with a very clean finish. Will you be knitting your button band separately or picking up stitches as you go? And do you intend to add grosgrain ribbon to the brioche button band? If so, I’d use your sewing machine like the commercial sweater. But don’t forget to use tear-away backing for stability. I’m excited to see how it all knits up!

Hi Roxanne. Great podcast! Very interesting to see the 3 needle join used for decreasing. Especially so close in time to watching your technique video. The Herringbone cast on is also quite interesting. Thanks for sharing it with us. I am looking forward to seeing what decisions you make regarding the button bands, buttonholes and buttons! Both the red and the gray will look great. Thanks for another great podcast!💕

If this is all about the buttons, and you commented that you don’t even unbutton your cardigans, you just slip them on, just so the buttons on make it a solid piece and you don’t have to worry about button holes. Just a suggestion.
@teresaallan68412 жыл бұрын
Hello! I was just wondering if half fisherman’s rib is a different enough construction that would allow the vertical buttonhole but give the same effect as brioche? Thanks for another informative video!

Hi there, your cardigan looks lovely and warm and nearly finished. I love the story of the frog and will look at it shortly. Some people have brilliant imaginative minds and really get involved. I don't do that because I worry about the guys in white coats turning up so its very straight laced here, I laugh when no one is watching. Being old is fun but on my terms. Thank you for sharing your podcast, as you know, I love it when you visit. I look forward to seeing you next week, if you have time. Take care.

The herringbone cast on really thrives when worked in two colors. It's just like brioche, which coincidentally is the buttonband of the reverse engineered sweater. Hhhhmmmmm 🤔 The red pocket lining on the sweater looks great now that we can see it in a bigger context, with more pieces of the garment done. Really good choice of colors! If the buttonholes in brioche don't work, maybe you can use snaps (magnetic or not) and place buttons on the band to look like a real buttonband.

One of my problems when going from a home schooled knitter to an Internet schooled one, was with casting on. My mother taught me a (long tailed) cast on method, but to this day I actually don't know which one it is. I've never seen anyone do it that way and trying to 3d-analyse all the variants does my head in.
@lulualex95472 жыл бұрын
loved this episode! the three needle decrease is kind of amazing! I might be tempted to try to use the button BAND from the original sweater- just detach it and re-sew it on.....? Not sure if that is possible, but it appeals to my lazy side-lol! (even though it would probably be more work) . just throwing that idea out there- as it does look quite nice with the new pieces pinned together and as there may not be enough wool. but curious to see the red and 2 colour versions as well!
@rosemary200012 жыл бұрын
the two greys look so nice together - could you rip out part of the old sweater and use it for the button band? Or is it possible to remove the old button band and seam it to the new sweater?
@RoxanneRichardson2 жыл бұрын
It's possible, but it's a different yarn fiber, different yarn weight, it's old and stained, and it would mean having three different colors in the sweater.

What are your thoughts on how stretchy this Estonian cast-on is, compared to other common cast-ons? What (in your opinion) would be the most practical applications for it?
@RoxanneRichardson2 жыл бұрын
Well, I learned it from a video on Estonian gloves, where it seems to be traditional, and is also used for projects that are worked in two colors. Either of those two applications would work fine. In most cases, any CO that produces an edge is interchangeable with another CO. Unless you have a very specific collection of requirements for the cast on, it should serve as well as any other.

I was so happy to see your post so soon after it was posted. I've never seen that three needle bind off before...so easy but it never occurred to me. Also have you thought about knitting both sleeves at the same time?
@RoxanneRichardson2 жыл бұрын
I'm not a 2aat knitter. I always feel like it's going soooo slowly. Purely psychological, because you have to knit both sleeves in order to finish the sweater, regardless!

I’m curious what your gauge is compared to the commercial sweater. I love the red pockets. And I also thought I would like to see a lattice cable panel up the back, but I understand why you kept the same cable pattern, and it looks nice. Is the Estonian knitting technique the same that’s used in the Schiaparelli bow sweater? I’m finding myself looking forward to your casual Fridays, even though I’m currently away from home house sitting for a month and brought only my hexipuff kit to motivate me to knit more hexipuffs, and I don’t have any other supplies with me. So watching your videos are like knitting joy by proxy for me, but also have me wanting to go cast on something new.

My goodness, that cast on is the "old Norwegian cast on"!! It was literally the first cast on I learnt!! Look it up on youtube, I'll go find the creator name... Edit: it's "laws of knitting", kzbin.info/www/bejne/iqfGoHpug9Ocd6M I love the herringbone aspect! I do a lot of nålbindning, so it's great to see all these parellels ☺
@RoxanneRichardson2 жыл бұрын
That's a twisted LTCO. There are lots of ways to do it, and it's known commonly by several names (Old Norwegian and Twisted German are the labels most people give it), but it is not the same CO as the herringbone CO. The herringbone goes under only the back strand of the thumb yarn, while the Old Norwegian CO goes under both, and the result produces a CO with an extra half twist at the base. I did a video a while back on something like 9 different ways of doing that CO: kzbin.info/www/bejne/f3vUqH1uhM-Fa7M
