I'll just scrub through to see some highlights." I did the exact opposite. I got sucked in with all the INCREDIBLE information you provided. Seriously, you provided the how AND the why. Incredible job, and now I'll always remember to move the weight uphill.

@@OtisOriginals I did end up purchase one! I was able to get pretty close to balancing my Canon 70D with a 50mm lens on it. At first it was a bit frustrating and my hands started to hurt. But I sat down with your videos on repeat and I eventually got pretty close (I may be in between weights and need to use washers like you said since I'm getting some slight rocking front to back). Again, I'm so thankful that you explained the science behind it so we can understand and get smoother shots.

Great balancing tutorial and well, I got it balanced with 2 sec drop time... Footage looks good... I'm not really feeling it though. If I go indoors gotta take my ND filter off, as to keep proper shutter speed, time to re-balance. Go back outdoors, put ND filter on, re-balance. Change prime lenses, re-balance. Go with a zoom instead, still gotta re-balance for any change in focal length. Set the device down or use it for a period of time... most likely gotta tweak the arm back to starting position, aka re-balance... A couple minutes to re-balance is a lot when shooting. Little things like the ND filter can be balanced fairly quick, but changing lenses is like re-balancing from scratch. It would be easier to have a separate camera and roxant for every setup I want to shoot with, but who can afford that? Since you mentioned working with cameras for years, is there something else you would recommend, as a camera stabilizer, for someone who likes to regularly use different focal lengths? Thanks Otis!!!

Hi Brent. I feel your pain. I have the Neewer Steadicam and the Neewer shoulder mount. With a friend as my "actor" I used my Steadicam first for the walking shots then used the shoulder mount in a static position as my friend would walk through the scene. In between this of course was a fair amount of time changing lenses, swapping release plates and setting up the follow focus etc. Then back to finish my video. My conclusion, I need another camera. I used the Nikon D5300 with an 18-55mm on the steadicam and a 75-300mm on the shoulder mount. So yes it's a pain but it's what it seems to take unless you can have at least 2 cameras.
@OtisOriginals5 жыл бұрын
Hi Brent. I feel your pains. I work in Hollywood as a Steadicam operator. Even with our full size rigs and cameras we still have to do the exact same thing whenever we change lenses or add or remove filters...we have to rebalance the rig. Sometimes it's as quick and simple as sliding the camera forward or backward slightly (say for a filter change), and other times it takes a minute to shift things around if changing a lens that weighs significantly more or less than the previous lens. We just learn to make the adjustments as quickly as possible to keep the production moving along. I wish there was an easier answer, but I'm afraid there just isn't. The best advice I can give you is to practice balancing different camera setups until you can do it almost without thinking. Thanks for your question and for watching, and keep on shooting!!

Kudos to you Sir! Excellent videos Thank you! I just received one today directly from China. Unfortunately, while setting it up for the first time, the screw for holding the camera wouldn't tighten the camera snugly, it was too long. So instead of putting a spacer in, I saw threads in the bottom of the knob and thought I could tighten the knob. Pliers applied and......yea, snapped the stud. This put me in mind of a 'Got Talent' programme I watched, where a magician set up an impossible challenge, and then pulled the rabbit out of the hat brilliantly. This too, especially the one with a roll of quarters taped to the camera, was brilliant (side note, I am british, so I'm not too sure what a roll of quarters is, but I can probably guess.) Anyway, did this video accomplish its purpose? Well, I have just ordered a Roxant from Amazon, I am also regretting the fit of frustration I had a few years when I threw a similar stabilizer in the rubbish bin in a fit of pique, and I am thinking about looping the audio as a soporific for when I can't sleep. As another commentator said, the video version of Bob Ross. All in all, good job, and many, many thanks for an excellent manner of teaching.

Gonna give the Roxant a try, never used anything like this, i have always used a tripod when doing video or just still shots, I'm what you would call an aspiring amateur :) I tried ordering another brand from amazon but it went out of stock as I ordered it and was looking at the Roxant. Took a few video views to find yours to figure out how to set it up, I'm using a canon Vixia HF S11 camcorder, I have a Tripod also, but would also like to have a hand held stabilizer for other projects. And not to mention my Wife's girl friend is getting married and would like me to get it on video. So I will give a go and if all else fails I will just use the tripod. :) Thank you for the very helpful video and informative as well, I will fer sure be watching it yet again.
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
I'm glad you're giving the Roxant Pro Stabilizer a try. Even as an "aspiring amateur" I think you'll notice an almost immediate improvement to the overall look of your video shoots. Just be sure to use it carefully. In other words, don't go running all over the place with it at the wedding just because you can. Controlled restraint and selective framing will give you a much more professional look, along with a good combination of tripod and stabilizer shots. And be sure to get some practice in with it before the big day. The more comfortable you are with balancing and operating it, the more you can concentrate on getting great shots. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for getting back to me, and yes I do understand that running around like a mad man is not like "Woo Hoo lets go." I should have it today as per the shipping info, and will be getting right to setting it up and practicing with it, feels like I'm cramming for an exam :) as the wedding is this weekend. I wish I had more time to get comfortable with it, so I was thinking of putting marks on it once I have it set up so that when moving to the tripod and back might make things a bit easier to get it balanced again. Just an idea?
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner, but I hope your Roxant Stabilizer arrived in time for you to get comfortable with it. Thanks so much, Otis, for another excellent video about the Roxant Pro! I’ve watched your whole series and your videos are by far the most helpful and thorough I’ve ever seen! One topic I don’t think I’ve heard you address is whether you oil or lubricate the ball connector on the gimbal. I think the instructions recommend a drop of 3-in-1 oil. What do you recommend?
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
Hi Linda. Thank you so much for your kind words. I'm glad you've enjoyed my tutorials and I hope you've found them useful. Yes, Roxant recommends using a drop of 3-in-1 oil, as the gimbal comes un-lubricated from the factory. And please use ONLY 1 or 2 drops....no more! Any more than that could gum up your stabilizer. I like to use sewing machine oil, as it's lighter and more slippery than 3-in-1 oil. But either one is fine. Please let me know if you have any further questions, and thanks for watching.

Otis... Can you balance a Camcorder that uses a flip out screen as it's view finder? The Panasonic, I have, has a forward end mounting 1/4 20 female... add the flip screen.... and she is a beast to balance. If I ever figure that one out.... I will definitely make a video to show people anything can be balanced on this stabilizer. Great video man!!! Am able to balance all my other rigs thanks to your excellent instruction.
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
I was thinking about your issue with balancing your Camcorder and want to suggest an option. You should be able to find a small version of what we call a "Cheeseplate". It's basically a thin rectangular piece of metal that has many mounting holes in it...so it looks like a piece of swiss cheese. You would mount your Camcorder to it using that forward end 1/4-20 mounting hole, and then screw your Roxant's mounting screw to one of the holes on the back end or near the middle of the cheeseplate....and that will bring your camera's center of gravity over the center of your Roxant stabilizer. And by mounting it off-center that could also help with the balance of your flip-out screen. Here's an example of one for about $10: www.amazon.com/SmallRig-Switching-Camera-Railblocks-Dovetails/dp/B00X5NXSRQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1529006283&sr=8-3&keywords=camera+cheese+plate Let me know if something like that would work for you, and thanks for watching!

You're very welcome. You deserve the BALANCE AWARD ever... I am trying to balance my Canon 60D (1220g) with battery and 18-135 lens fitted without strap. Sir, please suggest me the nearest weights I need to use in my case. I am using all the 3 weights provided with the stabilizer(each weighing 85-86g total =258g.) Also I have extended the weights to the extreme far using the last screw hole at the bottom of the silver colored weight hanger. Please help with the nearest weight required.
@OtisOriginals7 жыл бұрын
Praveen GreatHindu Thank you...very kind words. Your camera with that lens weighs almost 2.7 pounds (1220 grams), which is more than the 2.1 pounds (957 grams) recommended by Roxant. You can balance it by adding more weight to the bottom of the stabilizer, but just be aware that by using a camera and lens that heavy you might void your warranty. Try getting a longer bolt, a nut to fit that bolt, and some heavy washers or other kind of weights at your local hardware store for the bottom of your stabilizer. You will have to add about 1/3 pound of weight (150 grams) or maybe more to the existing 3 counter weights...yes, use all 3 weights, and extend the bottom arm all the way. You will have to experiment with how much additional weight to add at the bottom. I regularly use my Canon 7D with a prime lens, and that weighs 2.4 pounds (1088 grams)...and I am just barely able to balance it with the 3 counter weights that are included from Roxant. Does that all make sense? Let me know how that works for you. Thank you for your question.
@praveenkirsur7 жыл бұрын
Otis Originals Thank you so much for taking out your valuable time to reply to my comment. Sir, I have added a total weight of 433g as of now. The horizontal balance is just 1inch away from bottom position and tilt is set perfectly. So I am thinking I would need an extra 20g of weight to align it vertically. I will update you on the progress. Thank you so much again for helping with your knowledge. Any body builder can lift weights easily but can't fix weight on Roxant stabilizer.

Otis, great videos. I can't get my drop time slow enough. I have a Canon T5 (24.3oz). When I shorten my arm, it hid the handle. I have the red roxant with the red handle that is longer. I am using all three weights. Camera set towards the back and handle on the second hole to the front. Ps, I hope roxant is giving you some commission!
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
Hi James. It sounds like the T5 should not be a problem for the Roxant, but I think I know what the issue is. You mentioned that you're using all 3 weights but can't get your drop time slow enough. Try removing one of the bottom weights...try removing the smallest one first. Then extend the bottom arm all the way and slowly shorten it until you get to the 2 second drop time. If removing the smallest weight doesn't work, put that weight back on and remove the middle sized weight and then try extending the arm again. Somewhere in there you should find the perfect weight combination and arm position for your proper balance. Please let me know if that helped, or if you're still having problems. And thanks for watching!!

First, great video tutorials. But I have a question. My camera uses a USB cable going to a computer (this is needed for some real-time image processing). I know that this may mess up the forces that balance the gimbal. But if I tape the cable to the handle or wrap it around the handle in such a way that it doesn't pull on the balanced top end, and then send the loose end to the computer -- would that help? I suppose I should just try it. But if anyone has experience doing that please let me know.
@nahumgat57676 жыл бұрын
Oh, and BTW the computer (lap top) of course is not on the stabilized gimble but in a separate carrier) -- This is obvious, but I wanted to make sure no one think that the laptop is a part of the stabilized payload.
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
Great question. We actually have to do this with full size Steadicam rigs for films and television sometimes...running an external video cable instead of a wireless transmitter, or to receive signals from the broadcast booth for a live taping. And yes, I understand that your laptop is not part of the camera payload :-) The trick is to use a thin enough cable and make a loose loop that won't pull on the camera when you pan or tilt the stabilizer, and then attach the bottom part of that loop to the handle. So basically your initial idea was spot on correct. The issue is going to be finding a thin enough USB cable. I would definitely like to know if you find one, and if you were able to get it all to work properly. And if you do, I would love to see a video showing how you did it. Thanks for your question, and thank you for watching.

How to tighten the weight part? When off to the side as you have it, the bottom of the gimbal it tends to shift back with movement as I can't make the screw much tighter. What hardware do you recommend to secure the screw on that silvery part so it stays off to the side when balanced? Mine won't stay in place very long. Thanks!

Otis the video was very helpful. However I still have a problem. As I walk with the set up I get some side to side movement in the video. I don't think the stabilizer is swaying at the bottom it just seems to be my stride that causes it. Am I doing something wrong. Thanks for your assistance.
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
Hi Larry. It sounds like you may need to do a little practicing with your walk or stride. You hit the nail on the head with your guess. When you're using a stabilizer or gimbal you need to learn to walk differently. Basically, you should bend your knees like you are ducking down slightly and let your body absorb the bounces from your steps. These bounces would normally be transferred to your arm when you are walking standing straight, but by squatting very slightly you can minimize those bounces. You'll also need to walk almost like you're walking on a straight line or a tightrope. This will help to eliminate or at least reduce your hips swaying side to side when you walk, which as you've seen gets transferred through your arm and into your stabilizer...and finally into your video footage. It takes a little bit of practice, but you should see an improvement in your videos very quickly. I hope that answered your question. Please let me know how you're progressing, and thank you for watching.

Will this work if i mount something tall or with a high center of gravity as long as it is under que recomended 2.1 punds? Lets say, a lightweight camera with a bracket and a relatively heavy light mounted high and off the center of the stabilizer
@OtisOriginals5 жыл бұрын
That's kind of a tricky question to answer, as it all depends on the weight of the item and how high above the camera it is mounted. For example, even if the camera and light only weigh a total of 2.1 pounds, by having the light that much further away from the fulcrum point it virtually increases the total weight of the camera and light...think back to my see-saw analogy in the video. The further away from the fulcrum point a mass is, the heavier it will "appear" to be. I suppose you could mount almost any weight within reason, you'd just have to have the proper counter weight on the bottom of the stabilizer...and after a while that total extra weight will do a number on your arm. And I don't mean the bottom arm of the stabilizer, I mean YOUR actual arm...ouch. You might want to also check out one of my other videos "How to Balance Heavy Cameras" kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3-WpYCoht2Lhac It might give you some ideas on how to balance out the rig you're attempting. Just keep in mind that by going over the 2.1 pound weight limit you may void any warranty from Roxant...so proceed at your own risk. Thanks so much for your question, and thanks for watching.
@libertycity1175 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for the answer, both camera and light are under the 2.1 pound and i didn't know what i was doing wrong, your comment helped me to solve it, i was not thinking about "The further away from the fulcrum point a mass is, the heavier it will "appear" to be." and i was thinking only about being under the 2.1 weight limit, so i added more weight at the bottom and now is working fine,but it's really doing that number on my arm tho, but it's working! Thank you again and sorry if i make a mistake typing, not a native english speaker

Great video! I only have one weight. So should the weight be heavier or lighter then the device?
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
If you only received one weight you should contact Roxant so that they can send you the correct weights. The bottom of the stabilizer (including the counter weights) should weigh only slightly more than the top of the stabilizer (including the camera).
@protarget15 жыл бұрын
Hi looking at the links you gave for the Roxant and all the OEM ones ;-) I can't find one that has the 3 different weight sizes. All the weights look exactly the same, and the heavier size. I bought one off eBay UK for £9.50 posted. Surprised by the excellent quality. Weights are identical. again all the heavier size. I had no problem getting it right thanks to your excellent vid. Advice on washers or similar weights, because I have one weight, but to get the drop time correct I need one around half the size of the heavier one.Cheers

Sorry, I cannot answer questions about those cheap Knock-off eBay copies. Only official Roxant Pro Stabilizers have the correct weights in 3 different sizes, which are extremely important for correct balancing.

MOHAMED GAYED Hello. I'm sorry you're having some difficulties. I'm not sure why you're having a problem balancing your Nikon d3300. With the kit lens and a battery installed it only weighs about 1.5 pounds...well under the 2.1 pound weight limit. What kind of problem are you having? And if you watched part 1 of this video you will see me balance a Canon Power Shot which weighs 1.4 pounds...almost identical. Please go back and watch part 1 again and follow the instructions EXACTLY. And I mean watch and listen to EVERYTHING that I say...there is some very important information in there. Then if you're still having problems let me know. Thank you for your question, and thanks for watching.

This is super helpful-I'm still having a hell of a time getting this thing balanced. I'm using an iphone 8 with a battery case, so heavy enough I hope? It's just floating way too much. Everything seems fine, I ended up using the smallest weight with like 6 washers. Any tiny adjustment throws everything off so much. Any suggestions?
@OtisOriginals7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment and questions. Yes, the iphone 8 only weighs just over 5 ounces...so about 1/3 of a pound. That's pretty light for this stabilizer, although you said you are also using a battery case with it. Do you know how much that weighs? The problem with using a very light weight camera (or phone) is that just the smallest adjustment will cause a big change in the balance...as you've noticed. I know it can be frustrating, but with practice you can learn to make even smaller adjustments to get your perfect balance. When you said that it's floating way too much, do you mean that it sort of leans to one side, and then slowly sort of leans the other way? Or is the bottom swinging back and forth consistently like a pendulum? And are you able to achieve that 2 second Drop Time?...that part is so important to getting it balanced correctly. And if your drop time is too fast (less than 2 seconds), try removing the smallest weight and use just some washers as the counter balance...and adjusting the bottom arm up or down to get your drop time. Another that will help is adding some weight to the camera itself...or even the top stage (the part that the camera gets mounted to). You can get a small bolt and add some washers up there for weight, or even tape some washers or coins to the iphone case...anything that makes the camera heavier. That will give a greater overall mass to the stabilizer and make it easier to balance. I hope these suggestions will help you, and please let me know how it's going or if you have any further questions. And thanks for watching.
@alexpauley68287 жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought about putting a weight on the camera itself. It seems to level out eventually but when I move it it might tilt up or to the side, perhaps I should just submit a video. Everything seems to be good though, 2 second drop etc.
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
I'm so sorry, I just realized I never replied to this post. Yes, if you are still having balance problems and can post a video of what is happening it would help me to see the issues and help you fix the problem. Show that the stabilizer is level front to back and side to side...and also show the drop time test. Once I see those 2 things I can usually pretty quickly give you a solution.

I just cant make it tight enough. As soon as I try to check my drop time it comes loose and the weights move. Have I bought a cheap knock off version? It cost 24 English pounds from Amazon.

Otis, I got a Roxant Pro and balanced it per your instructions. Tried it today for the first time. I walked the up and down Hermosa strand. The shots were a lot smoother than w/o the Roxant, but the camera kept trying to rotate left or right and I had to keep rotating it back it so it stayed straight. Do you have any tips to keep the camera pointed straight ahead while walking? I'm using a Sony X3000 action cam with only a few washers as weights.
@OtisOriginals6 жыл бұрын
Hi Square Bet. I'm familiar with the strand in Hermosa...great place to try out your new stabilizer. Yes, I've also found that when using very lightweight or small cameras ...and therefore only using washers as counter weights ...that the stabilizer wants to "wander" left or right...it has to do with the physics of the rig. It really wants to have at least the smallest included counter weight on the bottom to give the whole stabilizer more stability. In order to do that you need to add some additional weight to the camera itself, or to the top section of the stabilizer. You can do this using a bolt and washers up top, or even taping some washers or other types of weight to the camera or top stage of the stabilizer...and that will allow you to add more weight to the bottom arm for balance. I'm currently working on a new tutorial covering balancing very small and light weight cameras and should have that online very soon. In the meantime you can also watch my tutorial on proper 2-handed operating technique...it's on my KZbin channel. It has some information that you might find useful for your rotation issue. Thanks for your comment and question, and thanks for watching.

@@biru9816 It sounds like you might need to do just a little more fine balancing. If the balance is not perfect to start you might not notice it when you're just walking slowly or smoothly. Hi again. I assume you are asking about my reference to using Loctite on the screw insert? (The same screw insert you had asked about in your other question?). "Loctite" is a brand of thread sealer, and it helps to lock threaded items together...but not permanently. So when you unscrew your handle from the stabilizer to move it to another balance hole, the screw insert will come out of the hole already attached to the top of your handle...so you won't have to unscrew the insert separately to move it to a different hole. For me, it makes the whole process of moving the handle much faster. Just make sure you ONLY use "Loctite Threadlocker BLUE 242"...and only use a tiny drop on the top thread of your handle, and then screw the screw insert on top of your handle. The Loctite BLUE is the non-permanent version and you can separate the screw insert from the top of your handle using a pair of pliers if you ever want to remove that screw insert. If you use Loctite RED or any other type you will not be able to remove that insert without a lot of trouble. Does that all make sense? Please let me know if I didn't explain it correctly for you, and thank you for your question.
