This album came out when alternative music was huge and branching into many subgenres. Roxy Music, along with bands such as Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, led the New Romantic scene which was identified by fashion as much as by the music. Bryan Ferry was generally recognized as the icon of the movement.

Yay! You gave them a second chance! Mad respect for doing that. Not many reactors would bother doing that after an initial negative reaction. I myself didn’t really ‘get’ them at first, but as my exposure to them grew, so did my respect and admiration for what they were doing. The thing with Roxy Music is that they’ve had such a varied musical output it’s impossible to judge them from a single random track. If you listen to something from their first album and then this (their last full studio album), you might wonder “is this even the same band?” Not to say that they don’t have an easily recognizable ‘sound’, just that they evolved quite a bit over time. They really are a hugely influential band and have had a rich history. Even if you don’t like everything they’ve done, it’s at least useful to know what they’re about.

I got introduced to this song in 2003 by the movie, "Lost in Translation" starring Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson. Became a Roxy Music (and Bryan Ferry solo fan) after hearing it. I will be seeing a reunited Roxy Music (with Paul Thompson, but no Brian Eno) later this year on their 50th anniversary tour.

70s Roxy Music - experimental pop, 80s Roxy Music - polished mainstream pop. Both have their positives and negatives, but I think I preferred them when they were taking risks, even if they didn't always pay off.

Hi NicknLex, this is their more commercial/poppy 80's sound. As i & others have said you should listen to their first 4 albums ( more experimental, art rock, glam rock period ) for a more rounded perspective. Glad that someone has mentioned Be Bop Deluxe as well, massively underrated 70's British band with the great Bill Nelson on lead guitar & vocals.

Roxy Musics best & most creative period was from 1972-1975 where they released 5 Albums. Most Americans prefer the late 70's-early Eighties period where the music was more polished & Radio friendly, most Brits prefer the earlier stuff which i would describe as Art Rock. So here's my personal preference of earlier songs from this amazing band. Lots of Deep Cuts which you will Love. trust me. Absolutely love your Reactions by the Way, the show is brilliant. 1st ALBUM (1972) Virginia Plane (Single) Ladytron if There is something ReMake/Re model Sea breezes FOR YOUR PLEASURE (1973) Pyjamarama (single) In Every Dream Home a Heartache Blue Lagoons Editions Of You Do The Strand STRANDED (1973) Street Life (single) Just Like You Amazona Serenade A Song For Europe Mother Of Pearl COUNTRY LIFE (1974) The Thrill Of It All All I Want Is You (single) Out Of The Blue Casanova Prairie Rose SIREN (1975) Love Is The Drug (single) Sentimental Fool She Sells Whirlwind Just another High

Roxy Music is a great band with a very diverse back catalog. Avalon was their last album and really ushered in the '80s New Wave sound. Although Roxy is not popular in the USA they were enormous in England and in Europe and were very influential. "Both Ends Buring" is a great song in my opinion, but it comes from a slightly earlier era it was more unapologetically masculine in its perspective. I think of it as a yearning but internal dialogue, whereas "More Than This" has a detached romanticism that is not held secretly. The singer, Bryan Ferry also has multiple solo albums full of excellent material. one wonderful song it does not get much attention is called "When She Walks in the Room" off of his album called The Bride Stripped Bare" I highly recommend you guys check it out, it's mostly violin and drums but full of tragic, yearning romance like so much of Bryan Ferry's work. There are also many traditional guitar based rock songs on that album. "Can't Let Go" is a good one. Also worth checking out our the Roxy Music songs "Street Life" "Grey Lagoons" & "Do The Strand". I guess you can tell I'm a fan, but there are many many great songs Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry

Avalon is certainly the most accessible Roxy Music album and one of my favorites. You mentioned Brian Eno in your commentary - Eno was actually a part of the band for their first album. Big part of art rock/prog history there. Check out the rest of the album - it is quite good. Also, investigate Phil Manzanera, the guitartist. He is amazing. He also played with Eno in a live band called 801. Keep up the good work! and thank you

I think the outstanding thing about this song is the lyrics. I always interpreted it as a plea to God to reveal himself. It's heartbreaking. It's not a happy song. "It was fun for a while. There was no way of knowing. Like a dream in the night, who can say where we're going. No care in the world, maybe I'm learning why the sea on the tide has no way of turning. More than this, you know there is nothing. More than this, tell me one thing. MOre than this - no, there is nothing." It feels to me like a description of the transition from carefree childhood to the deep, troubling questions of adulthood about life and death.

They have a great back catalogue of albums…. Please try the track “Perfect Weather To Fly” from the fabulous album “The Seldom Seen Kid “ It’s a song about how the band came together and their ambition Please listen carefully to the lyric the lead singer and lyricist is a complete genius. After listening to this track then try “ Grounds For Divorce “ and “ One day like this” from the same album……..( remember the lyrics!)

In the early 70's Roxy Music (Bryan Ferry) were in the same bracket as David Bowie. By the early 80's they moved onto the smooth sophisti-pop feel. Both periods are valid and as good as each other, but we don't have to like everything. As a suggestion for something new give Kate Bush a try...or even her duets with Peter Gabriel. There was a song they did together for a tv special in 1979 or 80 called 'Another Day'. It's worth finding on KZbin

I saw Roxy Music in Cardiff, Wales in the mid-seventies - coming down from Shrewsbury with 5 friends, we dropped some LSD on the train in anticipation of arriving in good time for the concert. At Abergavenny the train broke down and we sat in the carriage watching a beautiful sunset over the Welsh hills until British Rail sent a new engine. On arrival we ran to the concert hall and got there in time for the start, helplessly tripping. Eddie Jobson was playing a see-through violin if I remember correctly. Can't say I ever listened to their music again after that, I thought Brian Ferry was a snob...

Nick & Lex, Please don't let others dictate what you do. Also, most appreciate your true feelings and never be dishonest to appease the few selfishly rude listeners. We all have different likes and dislikes. It's very immature and unrealistic to think that your thoughts and impressions are any less important than mine or anyone else CHOOSING to follow your reactions. We wouldn't have so many genres of music if we all heard music the same way ... boring!! I, like most of your followers, appreciate your reactions and comments. Follow your hearts 💕 and enjoy every moment experiencing new music. Roxy Music ... I understand your first reaction because something didn't quite seem correct on some of their earlier albums. However, the band members are excellent in their own right. I've seen others suggest most of these, but Bryan Ferry's album, BOYS AND GIRLS is excellent. There isn't a bad song. Suggested songs ... SLAVE TO LOVE WINDSWEPT DON'T STOP THE DANCE ... Any song 🎵

I saw them at Radio City Music Hall for this tour. What a thrill! Not Only did I get to see Roxy Music, I also got to see former Grease Band members Alan Spenner, one of my favorite bass players, and Guitarist Neil Hubbard. These guys just don't know how to not sound great. Phil Manzanera, Roxy's lead guitarist, is a Prog Rock Icon and Brian Eno was a founding member -- He's on the first 2 albums. Some of their early recordings feel raw and unsettling (reminiscent of The Mothers or Gong) while some are pure pop, but most fall somewhere in between... Bottom line is that you can't hear one, two or half a dozen songs by them and truly know what they're about. BTW - Phil and Eno both appeared in the 801 projects. Anyway these guys were Prog Pioneers. I KNOW you guys ARE cultured and anyone who says otherwise is anything BUT cultured. Salud to you both Cheers!

I can't recommend Roxy Music enough, esp. if you liked this (or loved it). Their 1st two albums are my favorite, but 'Avalon' and 'Siren' are excellent as well. 'Stranded', 'Country Life' and 'Manifesto' have their moments of brilliance as well.

"Avalon" is an exceptional "album" - just one amazing song after another. So atmospheric, sophisticated but very emotional at the same time.

I can not believe that Nick didn't raise up his right hand next to Lex's face lol. Always reminds me of someone holding up a treat to a dog. 😃😃 btw I love this tune.

If you dive into the Roxy rabbit hole, don't miss guitarist Phil Manzanera's solo albums. 'Listen Now" from 1975 is a good place to start.

Avalon is fantastic. Good music for young couples in love…with the lights turned down…fire going…a little wine… Excuse me for a minute……

The movie Flashbacks of a Fool makes brilliant use of the track “If there is Something”. Maybe give that a listen…. Also love is solo stuff - Slave to Love and Don’t Stop the dance are big hits.

He was only on the first two albums, years before Avalon. He was producing Talking Heads, soon to produce U2 by this time. In addition to his own ambient music.

This whole album sounds so seductive due to the production and the tasteful use of delays - especially on "The Space Between Us". "The Main Thing" sounds something like a post Genesis Peter Gabriel song.

This was Roxy at their smooth commercial phase: perfectly pleasant but lacking the idiosyncratic touches in their first four albums. Try In Every Dream Home a Heartache from their second album (For Your Pleasure) for a taste of their art-rock beginnings…

“In Every Dream Home a Heartache” captures that gothic horror sound of Bryan’s vocals and Eno’s eerie synth sounds, and Phil’s breakout guitar solo, combined with the shock and sarcasm of the lyrics. But it’s so hard to represent Roxy Music with any one track - similar to attempting to introduce Bowie to someone with just one song. The whole is worth more than the sum of its parts - and their influence is undeniable but hard to display in just one song. Thanks again, everyone, for the interest and comments. ✨🤩

I love their first 5 albums, and my favorites are STRANDED and COUNRTY LIFE. I think they peaked with those 2 records. After the SIREN album, they became too soft, smooth, and overproduced for my taste. I think the Eddie Jobson lineup was their best.

The entire Avalon album is wonderful……I will confess to not knowing their music outside of that album…..and I’ve been told it’s different from the rest of their catalogue, but this album was very special to my husband and me when we first were dating…….still together 37 years later….

This is a song you just listen to with no effort , put the top down on the convertible and enjoy the drive. Check out Roxy Music's "Country Life" album it's the best of their 70's albums with great music on it more polished with a touch of eccentricity ✨✨✨✨♥️

Definitely worth checking out is Bryan Ferry's solo album ' Boys and Girls ' , it's in the same laid-back vein as this single from ' Avalon '. Not a week track from either album. Stellar musicianship too , Boys and Girls featuring the likes of David Gilmour ( Floyd ) and Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits ) , amongst others. Superb stuff , and thanks Nicknlex. 😍

Another Bryan Ferry solo album is 'Boys and Girls' has a nice cut on it called "Windswept". It got airplay on a soft rock/smooth jazz radio station I use to listen to when I lived in L.A. Some nice sax and guitaring (David Gilmore) going through it. A couple other more known songs on it are "Slave to Love" and "Don't Stop the Dance". Album came out 1985.

I'm happy I became familiar with your reaction videos. Youre both so very well rounded musically and I love your enthusiasm discovering new/old music I'm glad to see you both get into Roxy They are kind of hit and miss with me but when they hit they really get me. I like them because they have a multi faceted moodscape music sound to their later songs. You would have to ask somebody else about their earlier music. like I mentioned kind of hit and miss with me. Funny you should mention Brian Eno because he was one of the original members! "Take a chance with me" and Avalon are also good cuts off of this album. Phil Manzanera. their guitarist is very versatile and while his sound is kind of ambient with Roxy Music his solo efforts are worth checking out. His "6 PM" album has a David Gilmour vibe for me so enjoy and THANKS and sorry for babbling on!

Of Bryan Ferry solo material love “I Thought” where he reunited with Eno. Also “Lost” with Mark Knopfler and “Soldier of Fortune”. They each really pull at the heartstrings.
