As a life-long musician I must say that the composition and arrangement on this one is beyond good. It sounds simple, but the production is very deep and mystical. A great Roxy Music gift to all. Also, no one brings it like Bryan Ferry. That voice!!! What a treasure. Speaking of treasures, Amber...you ALWAYS get this stuff. Again I'll ask; "how old is your soul?" Love and peace to you both, always. Thank you! Everyone here, be well and happy.

Roxy music is NOT a rabbit hole. It's a complete UNIVERSE to explore: Roxy Music: 8 albums of ecclectic beauty, each one perfect in its own sense from the avant-garde debut through the wackyness of "For your Pleasure" up the the perfect elegance of "Avalon" Bryan Ferry: The lead singer 16 albums full of wonderful cover versions of mostly unknown songs. The few original albums in between are too cool and mature to believe. He perfected the sound of avalon up to the frozen elegance of "Mamouna". So influential as style icon (Yuppies) and his singing style was so much imitated by a lot of bands. Brian Eno: 20 albums. The soundscape mastermind, who as a producer went on to make Bowie a legend and U2 a chart-topper. His early albums are very much an extension of the wackier sound of Roxy Music before he single-handidly invented ambient/trance music. Phil Manzanera: 12 albums A perfect guitarist, often working with Pink Floyd and recording rock artefacts like 801 which is still sampled today. Very sought after as a producer. Andy Mackay: He introduced classic instruments into rock music with Roxy Music as early as 1973!

Hello. I think that Avalon is at Baschurch.All the best.
@zarbnet
@zarbnet 10 ай бұрын
Avalon is also supposedly at Glastonbury in Somerset - but Baschurch clearly has a claim too ... As others point out, this song is from Roxy Music's last album, in 1982. They formed in the early 1970s and were hugely influential in the UK. Their career had two phases - first as pioneers of glam and art rock through to the late 1970s, and then a transition to a smoother, cooler sound on later records like Flesh and Blood and Avalon. Bryan Ferry, their lead singer and main lyricist, had a very successful solo career alongside and after Roxy - others have mentioned "Don't Stop The Dance" from his 1985 album "Boys and Girls" which also features the hits "Slave to Love" and "Windswept" - I love his song "Sign of the Times" from 1978. Roxy did lots of fantastic songs, as did Ferry. Other Roxy classics - Virginia Plain, Street Life, Out Of The Blue, Love Is The Drug, Do The Strand, Dance Away, More Than This, Oh Yeah (On The Radio), Over You... - so many...!

I fell in love with this song when I was a preteen and the early days of MTV had this in heavy rotation (there were only so many videos when the channel started.) It sounds like twilight, it's romantic, understated, and sophisticated. The strange thing is that in lesser hands this would be elevator music, and yet it absolutely isn't elevator music. It's very intimate and hypnotic. It's a slow dance vibe. I just love it. This album cover is framed and hangs in my bedroom to this day. great reaction as always!!!!

I love this band! Here's a snippet of a quote from George Michael on Roxy Music ". When talking about his love for the band, it always came back to the sexual tension of Bryan Ferry, as Michael explains: “At both ends of the spectrum, Bryan Ferry’s made some of the sexiest music of the last 30 years. It’s so original, so sexy, and so insistent.” I think this is such a true statement! Thanks for the reaction and I'm so glad you dug them! ❤️

The second CD I ever bought was "Bryan Ferry and Roxy Music: Street Life 20 Great Hits" and what a fantastic compilation that was (yes, Avalon was included). Ferrry is such a smooth and stylish singer - one of the best of the 70s/80s.

You can’t imagine the impact this album had, at the time. It didn’t sound like anything they’d done before, though the previous album was definitely moving in this direction. It was starkly different from their early work, but if you follow the trail from Country Life through Siren, Manifesto, Flesh and Blood to Avalon, you can definitely see a progression that led them here. This whole album is a masterpiece. The only thing I know that’s even close to it came out soon after, Icehouse’s Primitive Man, which you should definitely check out too, if you like this.

Another vote for "More Than This", but Roxy Music has a fascinating back catalogue. The guitarist Phil Manzanera was on David Gilmour's last tour! This video was directed by Ridley Scott (yes *the* Ridley Scott as in Alien!) and was filmed at a big country house called Mentmore Towers, about 20 minutes from my house.

Yes they changed a lot, from the early prog, sometimes hard rock in the early 70s, to the smooth new wave group of 1980. But it was all good. (and Eno went off elsewhere, always doing something great. )

Great song. And great production quality. I'm glad you've discovered it! Avalon is the famous island of Arthurian legend. The magical place where King Arthur's sword Excalibur was made and later where Arthur was taken to hopefully recover from being gravely wounded at the Battle of Camlann. The album cover seemingly depicts someone - perhaps Merlin the sorcerer, on the waters surrounding Avalon.

Roxy Music was a complex British Rock band. They started out in 1970. Their music in the early-1970s had elements of Glam Rock, early Punk Rock, early New Wave, and Techno-Pop/Electronic music. “Avalon” was the title track to the group’s final album, which was released in 1982. Lead singer Bryan Ferry has released a number of solo albums, but often had members of Roxy Music working on the recordings. Roxy Music was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2019.

You've found them right at the end of their commercial success. Early 70s Roxy Music was edgier - even weird - 'Pyjamarama' and 'Virginia Plain'. 'Let's Stick Together' is probably their best known. They even did a superior (in my opinion) cover of John Lennon's 'Jealous Guy'. My favourite is 'Dance Away'. Great and surprising (I didn't think Jay would like it) reaction 😊

Great reaction, Jay and Amber. Roxy Music are a great band, they have two very different sounds, the early part of their career and later part, this is from the later part. They're a British band who started in the beginning of the '70s and continued into the '90s, Bryan Ferry their lead singer had a solo career too from the beginning and he's still recording today. Tracks to check out from them are: "Street Life", "Out of The Blue", "The Thrill of It All", "More Than This", "This Space Between Us", "Over You", "The Same Old Scene", tracks by Bryan Ferry, "Let's Stick Together", "The Price of Love", "It's Only Love", "This is Tomorrow", "Don't Stop The Dance", "Slave to Love", "Zamba", there are plenty of other tracks but these are good ones to start with.

The drums here are played by a session musician named Andy Newmark, who also played with Carly Simon, Pink Floyd, George Harrison, Bowie... tons of different artists, but in particular, Newmark drummed on Sly and the Family Stone's album "Fresh", which featured "Que Sera Sera". Just a phenomenal ability to subtly create a mood.

There was a time in the 1980's that whenever you went dancing at a club, any club, they would play Avalon at the end of the night as they were closing. Every. Single. One. The song is about a certain sadness at things ending - the party's over/ the background's fading/ the picture's changing - and Avalon itself is from Arthurian legend, and is the mystical island that King Arthur went after he was mortally wounded.
