I was shocked when I heard he passed. This was the first Newport Jazz Festival for my wife and me, after years of wanting to go. That's me in photographer's row, with a camera slung over each shoulder. I got some great shots of this performance. Those photos mean even more to me now. Thank you, Roy Hargrove. Rest easy, brother.

The alto saxophonist looks like Bruce Williams. I am not as yet quite familiar with his sound or style. Could it have been he? If it were he, then I would have first heard him with trumpeter Russell Gunn and drummer Cecil Brooks 111 in 2000 - on CD record. Oh, yes! It's he. Roy has Just shouted the names of the players - the performance having come to an end during my commentary. On "Altoicity", Bruce does some beautiful playing, his CD. I especially like "You Are So Beautiful" and "Sophisticated Lady". Bruce Williams gives a rendition in style and sound similar to that of Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Miguel Zenon, and Myron Walden. The rhythmic pulse is kind of 'different' from that which is the 'norm' in "Organic Real Jazz ". Thanks for posting!

Isn't Sherman Irby an alto saxophonist whose style is rooted in the "Organic Real Jazz" milieu? He can performance well. I may have seen him in one of Wynton Marsalis' Lincoln Centre Groups. Sherman is maybe a little stouter than altoist Bruce Williams who is herein pictured in the video with Roy Hartgrove. Both altoists are lettered in the rudiments, theory and practicality of true "Organic Real Jazz" - not to be confused with the misnomer "Smooth Jazz". The song poses the question thus:- "Mr.Magic, where have you gone?"
