Part 5 of some old Roy Harper footage that has recently surfaced. Five songs recorded live in studio. All five are in order in this playlist. But... recorded and filmed in which studio? Rumour has it that it's from Norwegian TV 1970. Roy has some vague recollection of the session but can't remember the 'where' or 'when'. We're working on that. Because of the songs being played, and the way some are being played, he thinks this session couldn't have been recorded after 1969.
These notes may develop. Check back for additional info...
'Forever' was released on 'Sophisticated Beggar' (1966)
Available at the artist's shop on cd, flac and mp3

I heard this song, just once, played, on a bitterly cold Sunday afternoon, in February 1974. I was servicing my Motorbike, listening to my little tranny radio, Johnnie Walker played it and it stuck in my head with it's simple pure beauty. I never forgot it. Hard times came and life got in the way..... Fast forward to 2003, an unscheduled, chance visit to a small cut price general store with my then girlfriend, I found a Roy Harper CD in the bargain bin for £1, it contained this magical track. Good things come to those who wait......

This is from a Norwegian (NRK) broadcast produced by Svein Erik Børja, August 1969. I know because I booked all of Roy's gigs and TV appearances in Norway during that amazing time period. No wonder Roy can't remember when and where, there was a lot of smoke in the air in those days. "Forever" is a wonderful song, and this version is so simple and honest. Roy is Roi!

Loved Roy Harper. Seen him millions of times, all over the place. First time at age 17. He had his 16 year old punk rock son Nick with him at the time, with a mohican if i remember correctly. That first gig was in the most intimate of settings, tiny little cozy pub. Made me a lover of his music for life.

We're just spinning leaves In the flight of dawn Little girl Falling through an eternal horizon of time But as we lie here I'd like to think That all we've got will be ours forever Don't you think we're forever I can hear a voice On the wings of my dream Little girl Melting me into love as it touches my heart But sheltered in the distance of your sleep Is all that I could love in a lifetime Don't you think we're forever Open your eyes To the call of the winds Little girl Can't you here them all saying I'll always be yours Lying in the misty morning sun The pillow of the night still beneath you Don't you think we're forever

It's a gut-wrencing, achingly beautiful lyric imo. You just know it's not going to last forever; it's possibly a song about first love in the naive spring of youth. And yet..... Time Is Temporary. It is a product of the mind, of ego. And beyond it is the eternal horizon, the ever-present moment of now: forever.

I first stumbled across Roy Harper's music in a record discount bin about 1979, a marked-down copy of "Bullinamingvase," with the transcendent "One of Those Days in England." I was attracted at first by the all-star guests on that album-Paul McCartney, Dave Gilmour, Henry McCullough (of Wings), etc.-but soon realized Roy was a power unto himself, a true original. I've been a fan ever since.

Simply sublime. So much depth in such simple lyrics; a melody and vocal of such gut-wrenching beauty. This is much more faithful to the original Sophisticated Beggar version than the imo inferior Valentine arrangement.
@lukebieniek9069
@lukebieniek9069 Жыл бұрын
I agree. Although, I started out with the Valentine version. I picked up a pile of Roy's albums in the cut out section at the "Mainstream" "record riot" at the Wisconsin state fair grounds, Milwaukee, approximately 1980. I had never heard of Roy. I was intrigued and began to read the credits on the cover of Bullinaming Vas, & noticed, Admiral Halsey listed as the drummer. I went home with 5 or more essential Roy Harper, "cut outs".?¿ Sophistcated Beggar was not in that rare find. I special ordered it much later along with "Come Out Fighting, Ghengus Smith"..'97ish. One word: lifechanging

Brilliant. So glad he survived the barbaric electric shock "treatment" that my brother didn't. "Electro-Convulsive Therapy" courtesy of Western Academic "Medicine". (My brother also got insulin-shock therapy. Never got out of psychiatric hospitals. Died of heart failure in 2005 aged 62.)

+forestsoceansmusic Well he did only have one treatment, however having met numerous people who had ECT as a last resort to treat chronic depression and following numerous attempts at suicide, I have mixed feelings about it as for many of these people (and their loved ones), they say that it saved their lives, although I agree that it should be used with a great deal of discrimination and as a last resort.

I first saw Roy Harper in 1981 at the London School of Economics, supported by Tymon Dogg (who was diabolical). Afterwards I had the pleasure of meeting him backstage as a 'googly-eyed 16 year young' girl and can only imagine with a good deal of embarrassment how much I probably swooned and gushed over one of my idols (the others being John Martyn, Joni Mitchell and James Taylor). I remember Roy scribbling out 'plus support' on my ticket and writing 'Timon Dog' (sec) which I thought was pretty decent of him. Roy was very charming and somewhat amused by my blushing, stammering demeanor and although I remember him putting his hand around my waist as I spoke to him and his parting 'tongue-in-cheek' words being "See you in a dream or two" - I did not find his behaviour to be offensive, inappropriate or in the least bit sleazy - in light of the potentially life-ruining allegations which were made about him in 2013 - dating back to 1979/80 - from which he has only just been cleared thankfully.
