As Erling Haaland steps out into the Premier League as a Manchester City player he will be watched over by his dad’s footballing nemesis, Roy Keane.
Haaland senior played for Man City, and Keane, now a Sky Sports pundit, played for Manchester United. Keane committed one of the worst fouls you are likely to see in professional football on Haaland senior.
This is the story of why that happened, the aftermath, and the (lack of) remorse.
Written by Seb Stafford-Bloor, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

@@jsn14 Yeah but Haaland didn’t know he was seriously injured wasn’t he? When a player goes down it’s normal for the defender to go “Get up and get on with it” and this was 2000s Prem mind you wherein tough tackles were part of the game. Whether that tackle was career ending or not is a different story now but the fact that Keane “wanted” to purposely injure Haaland is very immoral and psycho like in the first place.

The obsession with people accusing him of fake injuries is an interesting aspect to Keane's psychology. It's also the reason he walked out of / was sent home from the 2002 World Cup when the Ireland manager mentioned him missing certain games because of made up niggles and injuries. For a man that really doesn't appear to give a sh!t about other people's opinions and certainly couldn't be described as a people pleaser, its odd that this is such an issue for him. It might seem abit trite and cliché but I suppose Keane is that archetypal warrior mentality where weakness or being accused of not giving 100% is the ultimate accusation that can be leveled at him.

So Keane kicked Haaland once, not even trying to get to the ball and injured himself. For a revenge he kicked him a second time four years later, and this time way worse. It just baffles me that a player like this did not get a ban for at least the rest of season, as he had only the intension to injured Haaland. Although I highly doubt it played a huge factor in Erling signing with City over United, in my opinion it must have factored into the equation, even slightly. Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion or whatever, but this kind of attitude in the game is something I despise and I'm glad the football I get to watch doesn't have these so-called rivalries as much as there used to be before and football becomes about the actual technical skills and clean tackles that are far more challenging than an animalistic approach to the game. Frustrated players who get physical when they cannot get the ball are like toddlers who throw themselves on the floor when they don't get what they want.

The bit I don't get is that Keane's initial lunge and injury were quite clearly his fault. He can be as hard, stoic and angry as he wants, but both incidents were his fault. The second incident were in reaction to what Haaland said while thinking Keane had faked an injury to try and get a penalty. It must have been pretty tasty, to warrant that response 12 months later, so I'll assume it was pretty bad. The football culture in general probably feels fairly understanding of a player getting clattered by a player and then coming back and getting some justice... But I don't know if many of us agree with the idea of a bloke assualting another, intentionally, based on words alone. Just doesn't make him seem tough to me, just insane and petty.

This is from an interview with Alfie when Erling played at Molde under Keane’s former teammate Solskjaer: «Going back to the initial incident at Elland Road, Haaland said: He tried to tackle me and I got the free-kick. He was lying on the ground and I just told him to ‘get up’ as you normally do with players trying to tackle you - nothing more than that. I wasn’t trying to intend anything against him, but obviously he took that very hard. And about that ill-fated day at Old Trafford in 2001, Haaland added: “For eight years, I wasn’t injured. Coincidence or not, that was my last 90 minutes in England. Is that a coincidence, or isn’t it? “If you’re in the ground and someone hits you in the right leg, you can still twist your other leg. It can get injured and that’s probably what happened. “I haven’t played a full 90 minutes after that incident, that’s the hard fact. And people can judge whatever they want from that».

Then someone is lying here. Why are other people writing Haaland had some injury issues before this Roy Keane tackle? Also, even if Keane's tackle had an effect, than it's the doctors and physios fault (at Haaland's club). He continued to play after this tackle in this game and played a few games after this. Why did they let him do that? Obviously they didn't treat the injury properly and didn't think it was very serious at the time.

It's an odd concept to me that Alfe Inge isn't named by his name in the title, and that there will be people watching who never saw his dad play, never saw this match live and in some cases may not have even known that Erling's dad was a player himself Guess I grew up in the right era

A bit of a biased opinion, ain't it? There would be famous situations/ relations from previous generations that you might not be aware of. Therefore, videos about that era would have to be titled with respect to players you would be familiar with. Even if you are a scholar in the history of football, that doesn't mean everyone from your era would be like that (Not to mention that there would be people who do know about Alfe Inge even though they might not have seen him play).

I don't think it was an autobiography - it was more of a biography. Keane didn't actually say that or write the book himself. So many people talk nonsense about this quote and Keane ending Haaland's career it's utter BS. He did his job as a CM and yes sometimes let personal conflicts and his temper get the better of him most footballers have. I think there's very few people you'd want to face if you were the opposition and he was a great leader, doesn't get the respect he deserves.

One can't really say that tackle wasn't career ending, even though Haaland snr. was already injured in his other knee, you play football with both knees/legs so Keane kicking his "good knee" definitely impacted his playing and probably led to him retiring quicker. Keane is an inspirational player, but what he did to Haaland and how he described it years afterwards shows he is a sick human being.

does anyone know the details around why Alf-Inge and ManCity dropped taking legal actions against Keane for this? think it was at least partially due to Alfie having played with the injury for such a long time and the medics team said that part of the case would be impossible/difficult to win. But I remember roughly the same time, Duncan Fergusson got 3 months jail time for headbutting a John McStay on the pitch while playing for Rangers. Is the only difference here that Alfie didn't press charges, while McStay did, and they have to be filed by the offended party in UK? We have newly implemented rules in football where I live where all violent conducts will be reported to the police by the officials - irrellevant if the offended person wants to or not - at all levels of football. But the rules are different in different countries of course

Keane spent his whole career feeling insecure about his abilities.. that's what drove him and why he projected his anger onto those around him. Because of his limited technical abilities he deep down thought he was a "bluffer" a phrase he still uses about others. He had a decent first touch, brilliant positional awareness, the ability to keep it simple while playing forward, good decision making and amazing leadership skills on the pitch. Technically he had to keep it simple because he wasn't capable of much more. The fact that Haaland stood over him and called him a "bluffer" or a "fake" at the very moment Keane knew his season was over was an unfortunate misunderstanding but tapped into all of Keane's insecurities about himself and the rest is history.
