Roy had a tragic life. He died in his 50's from a coronary, lost his wife in a car accident and his sons in a fire. All of his contemporaries admired his unique voice and amazing range. In 2014 I was riding in a bus in Italy when this came on the radio and the whole bus was singing and dancing along!!! You can't sit still to this beat!

Roy wrote this song with his friend Bill Dees in 1964. It was a huge world hit then & re-released in 1990 for the Movie of the same name. He received a posthumous Grammy in 1991 for his live performance of this song for his HBO Special Roy Orbison & friends, A Black & White Night. He was one of the Greats.

Roy Orbison is one of the legendary singers of early rock and roll. He has a great catalog of songs to explore. The song "Pretty Woman" is a great place to start. It is the song he is best known for and his signature song. An absolute classic. Once again, Momma Gap and I share the same taste. "Pretty Woman" is also my favorite Roy Orbison song.

Orbison is a legend. A movie "Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night" is a perfect representation of how revered he was. Back up musicians included (there were more i Forgot).... T-Bone Burnett/ Bruce Springsteen/ Elvis Costello/ Tom Waits Backup singers Jackson Browne - Bonnie Raitt - k.d. Lang - Jennifer Warnes And the celebrities in the audience were A list all. It was recorded and released about a year before he died. Many musicians/singers that could fill a concert hall on their own... playing backup ... and awed to be there.

Roy Orbison was part of Million Dollar Quartet: Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis
@wnsafford1854
@wnsafford1854 Жыл бұрын
Roy wasn't part of the original "Million Dollar Quartet", which was actually just a 1 time event; Dec. 4, 1956, when Elvis, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis & Carl Perkins, bumped into each other, at Sun Records. They were chatting & impromptu, began singing around a piano. Thankfully, someone recorded part of that audio, which later, people began calling The Million Dollar Quartet Session. 21 years later, Dec. 1977, on the Johnny Cash Show, Johnny, Jerry Lee, Carl & Roy, recreated the "MDQ", to honor Elvis, by singing "This Train." I don't know if these 4 did later performances as the "MDQ", but in 1985, they did do an album as such, to honor Sun Records/Sam Phillips.

My mom had brown eyes, and when I was a little boy I heard my dad sing "beautiful beautiful brown eyes" over and over to her. (There actually was a song back then that he was using, but in that song the eyes were blue). Well it wasn't until I was quite a bit older that I heard the original song, and realized dad had changed the words from blue to brown for my mom. I miss "em both, but plan on seeing them someday in the not so distant future. Really enjoy your channel, thank you.

He has won numerous Grammy Awards for his songwriting/singing. He is listed #37 of the Greatest Artists of All-time and #13 on the list of the 100 greatest singers of all time. Started in 60's in rockabilly & country-western genre. Between '60 and '66 he had 22 singles in the Top 40, including: only the lonely, dreams and Pretty Woman. Some rough times in the 70's but rebounded in popularity in the 80's with several covers of some of his songs. In '88 he co-founded The Travelin' Wilburys - and died in Dec '88. A month later his single "You Got It" was released and went into the Top 10. He wore dark suits and dark sunglasses to hide his shyness and stage fright. He is a true music icon and legend with an operatic voice that is clear and smooth with very good range and tone control.

I tried my dam*est to meet Mr. Orbison, I did live somewhat near at one point but too young and the folks moved away. I received a new position in and around Nashville, this meant an apt. back home to where my soul was, but to my great disappointment both Roy and Johnny Cash passed away before I could get back. My entire life it seems the Universe has done such things to me, often look on purpose (It would be an interesting read), but at the same time has given me pretty much all I need to be Happy. I still would have liked to meet Mr. Orbison. *- Your boy Barry Gibb purchased Johnny Cash's home.

"A pretty woman never needs any money" was what the co-writer told Roy when he asked his wife Claudette if she needed any shopping money. Yes, many people associate Oh, Pretty Woman with the movie and what woman would not want to be also associated with it (GGR should know). 1964, The Beatles and The British Invasion, and yet this song was a strong #1 for 3 weeks around September (it was his only #1 hit, on the radio all the time). Roy did have earlier hits and was known for what people describe as an operatic voice. As Iconic As It Comes. :)

I consider this song the perfect single-when this aired on the radio-the drums lock you in-the guitar riff grabs you and Roy's grorrrowwwlll was a bit subversive and suggestive at the time-all ingredients combined add up to a great rock and roll classic. In Dreams is another son of Roy Orbison that should be listened two. Roy Orbison claimed in interviews that the lyrics for this song came to him in a dream; he wrote the music once he woke up. Typical of many Orbison songs, it's a heartbreaker: asleep at night is the only time he can be with the one he loves, as when he wakes up, she's gone.

(8860) This is probably the place and time for a call for sth. from the "Traveling Wilburys". They may have been short lived (1988 - 1990) due to Roy's death, but they were great! Don't be confused, that there are two albums called "Traveling Wilburys (Vol. 1 & 3)". There are several theories about whether "Vol. 2" did ever exist or what was it like. Strong recommendations include "Handle with Care" and "End of the Line"...

They are a Super Group, which included Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne and Bob Dylan. Handle with Care is great and has Roy Orbison there with them. End of The Line is also great.
