The biggest problem with this is for people like my husband who use a CPAP machine. With so many ships without outlets near the beds. We bring a non-surgprotected extension cord that we run along the ceiling with magnetic hooks so he can sleep at night. We had tried asking for one on the ship to provide, but they never have one available, so we, of course, bring our own. This is a medical device that these people need to use. So unless cruise lines want to make sure they have plenty to hand out, they better not be stricked on CPAP users.

The ship was built in 1996 or 1998, if I remember correctly. @@timlaunyc No, it is surge protectors. Nothing to do with thin wires. Ships are wired very differently than houses and ordinary surge protectors can overheat and burn up, and they can also trip protective devices in the wiring which will inconvenience a lot of people as multiple cabins lose power.

@@steve1la I’ve had power strips taken away on Royal in Australia and Miami. In Australia they gave it back to me after they checked it. At first they told me I had to use theirs which was only Australian: I didn’t have enough adapters for that. In Miami they left it ashore. I’ve been to the naughty room to open my bag because they saw a plug. It was a curling iron. Royal as we were coming back from the pandemic brought me a 6 ft cord -- ONE! Is strung at bed height. I was told there were no others. I’ve always filed the special needs papers to include the extension cords. When I did that for NCL out of port Canaveral they said bring your own, we won’t be responsible or similar words. And they told me to bring my own distilled water which we couldn’t do, but we got that. In non accessible rooms. Royal is hit or miss, but I’ve moved to accessible only. NCL was unwilling to consider the cord, but the room steward offered one. On Crystal before the bankruptcy I asked for a cord and when I came back I thought they hadn’t brought on. The room steward had strung it around the room over the curtains etc so it didn’t show, but it was definitely there. For accessible rooms. Royal is problematic. Azamara normal gives me a cord, but they’ve redone the rooms so now there is one large 220v plug near the bed. We just asked them to check the power strip so we could use both CPAPs. Similarly Celebrity now has on the bed side wall. Oceania gave us a cord, I think, or the plugs were by the bed. Seaborne I didn’t have an issue. MSC has very long cord for which you put a $50 deposit down for. I’m not sure they can be bought for that little now! MSC also has trouble with distilled water. Last time I talked to Guest relations I suggested they weren’t understanding the word distilled as guest service was able to bring me the water. At other times they seemed to be giving me distilled sea water, that was reasonable until one morning my water chamber was completely white -- what a mess. Our biggest problem now is that as of 2018, we now need 2 cords and they resist those. We did carry a construction grade tap that made a single cord to allow for 3 plugs. And I still have a mobility device to charge overnight too, but I prefer not to put it on an extension cord. I know TMI, but yes by all means request cords and water early. Just be aware that it doesn’t always go smoothly.

On the recent Ultimate World Cruise on Serenade OTS, there was a fire in one of the passenger cabins. A World Cruiser shared this information: " the passengers in the cabin had a multiport charger, which they plugged into the outlet, plugged in their devices and left the charger and the devices on the bed. The passengers then left the cabin. Sometime later the bedding caught fire, the smoke detector went off and the sprinklers in the cabin went off. The crew's fire control team then entered the cabin to extinguish the blaze." Wonder if this recent event is part of the renewed emphasis on what plugs are allowed and what plugs aren't allowed.

I agree, it's like they are looking for things to ban. Like the recent story from people wanting speakers banned. The rules already say that using speakers in public areas is not permitted, so enforce the rules instead of trying to ban everyone from having a speaker on the ship. I suspect this ban is because they ban surge protected power strips, and it's hard to tell one from another, so they just want to ban them all. It's stupid.

You don’t have to plug every electric object you bring on board at once! Overloading an electric system by 4 to 10 times depending on how many outlet multipliers you use is dangerous. Now imagine everyone does that. Would you plug 8 things into every outlet you have in your home, certainly not because you’d probably overload the system tripping breakers, or worse burning down your house.

Wow. That sucks. We took a Royal cruise earlier this year on an older ship. USB outlets were virtually non-existent. Even with USB outlets, many are severely under-powered. I did have an international plug, so that helped a bit. Still, people are traveling with so many devices these days (regardless of how you might feel about "unplugging" on vacation - it's a fact of life), this just feels ridiculous. 😢 My next cruise will not be on Royal.

I'm guessing the INTENT is to limit power draw in the room. most US 110 outlets are rated for either 15 or 20A (depending on the upstream breaker and wire used). What happens with these multi outlet/plug devices is that they aren't using the proper internal wiring to support the full power draw, nor do they have a fuse or other safe means of disconnecting power if the current draw is more than the wire can handle, and thus become a fire hazard. annoying because "it worked" in the past, but that doesn't make it any safer. as for the "just put more outlets in". well that's probably easier said than done. this isn't your home where you can just cut a hole in your drywall and run another cable.

I wonder if they will confiscate my device tomorrow. If they do, I hope that they will at least return it to me at the end of the cruise rather than keep it.

I was going to say they better have more outlets. On a recent Carnival cruise, there were 3 US outlets. Well, except one was for the TV and one was for electric razors. So that on left ONE. There was also a Euro plug but it the bedside lamps were plugged into it. But with 2 US plugs plus 2 USB outlets that should work. I will also point out that most TVs have a USB port. We are about to go on HAL and here is what they say about it: Electrical devices such as small fans, power strips, multi plug box outlets/ adaptors, and extension cords without surge protectors are allowed onboard when used with proper caution.

Thing of course is that people tend to somtimes overload these multi port extensions and then they CAN become a fire hazard! Also the Chinese crappy quality of these extensions make that these fire hazards already start at relatively low power usage. Mainly to do with the bad electronics used for the USB ports made.

I am more surprised the plug that steps euro voltage down to US voltage is not banned. Those are notoriously dangerous because they sell ones that look exactly the same while it does not step the voltage down and just changes the plug type and people buy those because they are cheaper and slam 220v into their 110v devices and appliances. That is a major fire hazard because people don't read and just buy the cheap one without realizing they are not the same thing. There is somewhere on youtube of an English youtuber that bought an American hot dog and bun toaster and used one of those plugs. At first he could not understand why it was getting so hot and then the device started melting its external plastic.
@davidthaler7018
@davidthaler7018 Ай бұрын
I agree. There’s a difference between an adapter facilitating the use of an outlet without changing the voltage, and a converter. It seems odd to me that the one European outlet would operate on different voltage, but even so, tablets and phones (and maybe some electric razors) can usually be charged via 110 or 220 so you may only need an adapter.

There are no approved items, only vaguely described forbidden ones. Where is their test data showing danger. Any electricsl device can start a fire when overheating. Like the lithium batteroes of laptops and power banks, but neither has utility power plugs or outlets. But the meanimg of the bams are left to imterpretation of security personnel who have no training in electricity or fire safety

The extension cord thing is ridiculous. CPAP users need it to use them at night because most ships do not have outlets near the beds.
