Royal Enfield Classic 350 Lakes Tour - Episode 2 onto Helvellyn.

I continue the Royal Enfield Classic 350 Lakes Tour to my stop for the night, Helvellyn Youth Hostel, or so I thought!
The Enfield plodded along never missing a beat over bleak moorland and at the side of Ullswater.
The highlight of this part of the ride was the “road” to YHA Helvellyn. The tarmac soon disappeared turning into gravel, then parts of concrete and finally large stones and rocks. I thought it would be a challenge for the plucky little 350, but it just dug in and carried on.
When I finally arrived disappointment set in. They were closed! A problem with the water supply apparently. They thought everyone had been contacted, but I had been missed off the list.
They got me in at Ambleside for the night, so I would be riding back down the “road” and over Kirkstone Pas.
But that’s for the next episode. Sit back and let's continue the ride.

@@thatblokeonamotorbike Sadly no, I'm in the car with the wife. I have stopped here on bike trips before though. The view as you come down that hill into Nateby is, for me, one of the best in England. Back off home to the Isle of Man today.

Salut non ce n'est pas un chemin de fer, c'est une piste de montagne qui était utilisée par les anciens mineurs travaillant dans les mines de la région. L'auberge où j'allais rester est à la fin de cette piste. Je suis sûr que vous allez adorer le 350 classique lorsque vous en aurez un et que vous vivrez de nombreuses aventures épiques. Yes - I went by Ravenseat Farm a couple of summers ago and it is a bleak landscape - even in summer. I'd hate to be riding that road in mid winter.

I love the Tractor factor in the Classic 350. It just does what it needs to do without any complaints. Another beautiful ride. Now on to the next part in your series.

Hi Peter, I did find the bed for the night thanks. These little bikes are like mountain goats. In other episodes I will be going over Lakeland passes, Honister, Hardknott, Wrynose and Langdales. It never missed a beat, I loved all of it. Where abouts do you ride yours? Ride safe, Dave

@@thatblokeonamotorbike I live in Basingstoke Hampshire so do not have the car free roads that you are enjoying. However I love every minute on mine having done about 1600 miles since the middle of April. Glad you found a bed ok then, looking forward to the rest of the journey you have videoed 🙂

Just searched what the black and white poles at the side of the moor roads are........snow poles. Learned something new today.

I definitely wouldn't want to ride those roads in snow, although it would be an adventure. I used to ride in snow and not think anything about it, as I got older I have got more sense lol Ride safe

Great trip, very nice views. Shame about the accommodation being closed. I spent a week staying in that Hostel back in the mid 80s whilst on a winter climbing course. We found the bunk beds very short, must of use had our feet Over into the next bunk.

I'm really enjoying this series. I'm so impressed with how versatile and capable these bikes are. Mine's perfect for the Dorset lanes that I wouldn't take my other bikes down. It's been great for exploring Dartmoor and Exmoor too. I've done 3000 miles on it since March and it just keeps getting better.

Enjoyed that mate. A bit naughty of the Hostel not contacting you, but an adventure non the less. I tried Calimoto, just couldn’t get on with it, but I had it in the phone on the handlebars. The direction arrows drove me nuts, but using like you have on voice, seems much better.

I'm amazed that more riders don't seek out these kinds of roads. The whole country is networked with them. You can be a mile from a horror road like the M1 and in total bliss.

Great video. Interested in your mention of Calimoto. I guess this is a free nav app for your phone. I see yours is connected to the USB port on your handlebars. Do have an earpiece connected too? Do you recommend the app? I am still running in my RE 350 classic, red and chrome. I love her, she's called Ruby. Looking forward to your next video in the Lakes. Thanks and well done. Hi, I do recommend calimoto, I have it on my phone in my jacket pocket. I'm my helmet is a £20 Bluetooth headset that connects to it. I was thinking about doing a video of the set up Ride safe

Hi, thanks for the comment. I'm planning a video about the Lomo and how I fitted them. They are very good, these are the large size and I can get my laptop bag in for work. I used some straps from Amazon to fix them. Threaded them through the webbing and round the pannier frames. I have 2 vertical and one horizontal on each one. Hope that helps Ride safe Dave
