GEARBOX: A quick update on the gearbox: After taking a viewer's advice and adjusting the gear lever position, all my issues with false neutrals were solved-it was simply rider error! As for the controversial 6th gear comment, after riding the bike nearly every day, I’ve come to prefer the 5-speed setup. It suits the bike perfectly, as it doesn’t need a 6th gear for higher speeds. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with it. Thank you to everyone who has supported this video! I wanted to share a few updates. Since making this video a few months ago, I've changed my opinion on a couple of things. First, the "hates" I mentioned were really just minor quirks, emphasized for entertainment purposes. I do not want these "hates" to dissuade you from the bike-I absolutely love it! It’s the best bike I have ever owned. Considering what this bike is meant for, it’s incredibly hard to find any real flaws. Thanks again for your support and for joining me on this journey! Feel free to share your thoughts or experiences with this bike in the comments-I’d love to hear what you think!

I have the exact same bike & I love it too, regarding your hates my findings are: 1/ Take no notice of valve clearance frequency, when they want adjusting you will hear them start tapping away, it's old school maintenance, NOT stealers maintenance. 2/ Transmission, I've found mine to be very slick, I did move the gear shifter downwards on the splines as the factory setting wasn"t good for me, maybe that's your issue. 3/ Power, yes a little more would be nice, but I've loaded mine up with a weeks camping gear & it still pulled just the same as riding it solo. 4/ A sixth gear would be useless with the amount of H.P. the engine produces, the engine will just bog down when you selected it. Bonus/ Gear indicator would be good. 5/ Anything this stunning to look at is going to take some cleaning, live with it. These are my take on the machine, I've been riding, maintaining, & rebuilding classic motorcycles for 51 years, in all that time over a multitude of bikes owned this is one of only 2 bikes that put a grin on my face whenever I ride it. Thanks for the video.

DNA Stg. II filter, FuelX Lite, Hitchcocks De-Cat pipe and Cam make a huge difference. 33% more power. I have the same Chrome-Bronze and hated it for the first 1000 miles coming off a CBR1000RR but I only ride my Classic these days. A totally different riding experience. The Royal Enfield Classic 500 has 8 more horse power and self adjusting tappets,it also has the option of putting a 535 upgrade from the old 2015 Continental GT, its the same motor so it just bolts straight in, they are available from Hitchcocks, I have the conversion on one of my bikes and I’m very happy with it, anyway food for thought hey! The Super Meteor 650 has 6 gears and a gear indicator,. I own both and I love them 😊

Thanks, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed. As far as keeping the bike clean,Stuart Fillingham has been reviewing a ceramic polish that is spirit based and lasts for a year. I have bought a bottle and it is bloody amazing stuff and the grime just doesn’t stick to it so it makes keeping it clean heaps easier. If you’re willing to wait a bit I believe Hitchcocks are bringing out a big bore kit for the 350 that will really help with the power problem. So there are a few good solutions around and you can’t really go wrong with any of the Royal Enfield bikes, they really are something special 😊

@@felixVanDiemen 100% agree! And that will be very interesting to see what Hitchcocks will cook up. I have since this video also bought a ceramic polish spray, and it has done the job perfectly, not as long lasting as the spirit based one Stuart uses, however doing the job perfectly. The last "Hate" was a bit of a cop out anyway, hard to find faults with these bikes!

Great vlog! Gearbox - I’ve had the opposite experience. This gearbox is THE BEST box I’ve ever ridden (like you, ridden Japanese and triumph bikes and still have one of each). It is buttery smooth and I’ve never had a single false neutral. Not sure if it’s, like you say, it’s user error or if yours is a Friday bike and mine is a Monday bike? As for six gears, this kind of bike doesn’t need six gears - in fact, particularly on this bike, you’d be changing gear far too often and missing the torque this little engine has. Good work!

I’m glad you like the spoked wheels. Me too. A lot of people hate them because it generally means tubes. I have ridden the hunter 350 which was fun and relaxing. I have, amongst others, a 2022 interceptor 650 (with a blown gearbox due to all of those false neutrals but inside of warranty…..it’s not really rider error, it’s RE error), and a 2021 Bonneville T100 so I love the classic look…..also re maintenance intervals the Bonnie has 16,000kms wtf? (Or 1 year which is more like it).
@RippleMoto
@RippleMoto 4 ай бұрын
Yeah the spoked wheels are great. It is a shame they are tubed but that being said you can DIY convert them. However for me they look too damn good! The intervals are crazy, your Bonnie is great, think that might have to be the next bike for me or in the running. Nothing beats the classic look. Enjoy your ride, and stay upright!
@tomstockell9481
@tomstockell9481 4 ай бұрын
Yep all true....maybe you should look at the Interceptor, but reckon the T100 will be your next bike ...thats what I'm aiming for as it has a much better riding position ( as you probably know the Interceptor was an after thought in the production of the Continental GT, same frame, same rake of 24 degrees, which you're always fighting against in the upright position )
@RippleMoto
@RippleMoto 4 ай бұрын
Agree 100% about the interceptor. The T100 definitely screams out to me, I have always admired them. i really loved the look of the older 865cc models, but the newer ones with a few mods look really nice aswell. I also love the scrambler styling on both (I know they arent everyones cup of tea) but I really need to test ride one. shame the newer models cost an arm and a leg compared to the 865's. I dont think they come with ABS on the older ones either from what i can tell, which is annoying as I would always prefer ABS.

Yep no ABS on older models….Scrambler looks great, but no chance of throw over panniers like the T100 because of the exhaust…suggest having a look at The All Year Motorcyclist’s recent review …he’s also got a T100 and a Classic, it’s great channel….reckon we both need to start saving ! …content with the Classic in the meantime - cheers

For the false neutrals, try moving the shift lever one spline clockwise. From the factory they're set a little too flat. With it's less than ample power I don't think it would pull a sixth gear. I was talking to a gentleman today on his BSA Bantam D1. Fully restored and just beautiful. But, with just three gears (shifter on the right) and a very peaky power delivery he said riding it was an art form 😊
@RippleMoto
@RippleMoto 4 ай бұрын
An art form indeed! wow, what a bike. Thank you for the insight, I will look into doing this, however with getting to know the bike it is less and less of an issue and mainly a problem only when I find my self not concentrating properly. None the less it might still be worth it. Do you have a classic 350 of your own?
@PhilipBallGarry

@@RippleMoto yes, I've had one in gunmetal grey for just over a year and love it. At first it was a little frustrating especially during the break in period. But in 45 years of motorcycling I have to say that the climb back down the performance ladder has been much more satisfying than climbing up. The engagement and accessibility are what makes it so satisfying. I can ride it almost anywhere - where bigger bikes would have me nervous about falling.

If riding under 60-65 mph the fuel consumption stays very economical. True, I also hate the service interval of the bike. I'll probably get another bike but will never part with the 350, unless a 500 single is made. Doing ALL the performance upgrades (filter, pipes, fuelx, camshaft) to the 350 may get you 4-5 more ponies, which given it has only 18-20, isn't that bad but probably changes sound of bike too much. I think RE did rather well with the stock sound of the bike.

From what I've seen, switching to the DNA air filter just changes the sound, while also opening up your engine to more particulates. It doesn't actually make the bike any faster. That comes from just one rider's experience but it made sense. May as well save that money and put it toward some crash guards.

If you are willing to tinker a little bit, try the fuelX lite , DNA air filter with stage two and 16T front sprocket. These help the bike run a lot smoother at higher speeds. FuelX helps with fuel mapping and makes the bike run cooler and gets rid of any hiccups. DNA air filter with its stage two upgrades lets the bike breathe easier which helps with acceleration. 16 tooth front sprocket from memory will make the gears longer which means at 100kph in 5th gear you should be running the engine 300-500 rpm lower than using the standard 15 tooth. Will this increase top speed? No they are limited by the ABS.
@RippleMoto
@RippleMoto 4 ай бұрын
I will probably have to add these modifications to the list, they do sound like the fix many of my issues with the bike! I have however heard that in changing the fuel mapping, it can remove some of the character of the bike, but for the smoother high speed it might be a worthwhile trade off. I didn't know the ABS limited the top speed that is also very interesting! Thank you for this insight. Have you done these modifications to your own?

It doesn't actually make the bike any faster. That comes from just one rider's experience but it made sense. May as well save that money and put it toward some crash guards. You could get the heel toe shifter for that money instead.

It's a relief to hear you talk about false neutrals, I was beginning to think it was just me. Most 350 riders say things like "the sweetest gearbox I've ever owned", which has not been my experience. It's mainly the long shift through neutral between first and second, but can appear in other gears. Finding neutral can also be tricky, and the green light doesn't mean it's in neutral, and no light doesn't mean it isn't! However, the box does get better with miles.
@RippleMoto

Glad I am not the only one! It definitely seems to be getting better with more miles. And yes I have learnt to never trust the light lol, I let the clutch out very slowly every time to avoid the embarrassment of it tricking me into stalling. Another commenter recommended that I change the angle of the shift lever, as it is slightly too flat. I am going to look into doing this as this might also be a contributor. -Recently I purshased a red/chrome 350 . I owned a Yamaha Trailway125(12hp) a decade ago and now a moto guzzi Griso12008V. I specifically shyed away from chain drives but having known RE for 30years (since the diesel engines I can remember) I pulled the plug when noticing the belt drive option. I have Gates belt on my bicycle and love it no noise, no adjustments, no maintenance or cleaning. When they are in stock I'll order a set and store the stock chain and sprockets. -There are just so few downsides in this bike when accepting it is just what it is. The only thing worth considering is a fuelX to cool the engine down a bit and maybe a decat and open intake nozzle with stock filter. I have seen throttle bodies with a fine dust sticking inside on K&N filtered bikes. The "stone mesh" is strongly disadviced and a slightly more open intake house will do just fine. Other than that, I wouldn't want the original sound pressure level increased it's spot on IMO and if it can easely do 105kmh it's fine. -Touring seat or mudguard might be nice but I'll find out. -new Beeline Moto2 is on order and might be installed on/in the dash or a tripper installed One thing I really love about this bike is without pillion seat it's soo easy to throw your leg over the bike. The only negative right now is having a leather jacked now and like to have a more allround jacket to match my Griso and classic is a PITA.

From an owner of a 2008 Bonneville T100 with almost as much chrome except for the fenders, try S100 Total Motorcycle Cleaner. Just spray S100 on a cool, to the touch, bike, let it sit for 30 seconds and hose off. Dry off with a leaf blower and you are done ready to ride in 15-20 minutes. Before with hand cleaning the chrome spoke wheels by hand, could take 3-4 hours depending on how OCD I was that day.

Imagine there are people touring around on 9 hp Honda Cub 125s lol, they love them, have to say I'd love to ride one too, lovely little bike. I'm currently on a 2007 Tmax 500 , it has 40 Hp and it just about perfect, I couldn't see myself wanting more power and not sure I'd want a bike with less power that I'm used to it. I rode a Honda CF600 recently and loved it, so much better handling and comfort compared to the tmax. The RE classic 350 is a gorgeous looking bike and here in Ireland it would be a nightmare to keep clean and this is what is causing me to think twice about what bike to get next because I love classic looking bikes, the RE 350, the Kawasaki W800 all lovely bikes but I've no garage to store them for now and don't want to have to keep cleaning because here in Ireland the climate maybe be shit but there's not many places 53 Degrees North that can allow motorcycling pretty much all the year around if you're prepared to put up with the wet and not many places 53 Deg North that can grow healthy Palm trees either lol. XCP clear coat is supposed to be incredibly good at keeping your bike protected all year around, once the bike is spotless and dry spray it on and wipe off excess. XCP clear coat is much better than ACF50 too ! XCP clear coat is supposed to make cleaning easier too as it doesn't stick to the bike as much. I wonder is the rumour true that Royal Enfield are bringing out a classic 650 ? that would be amazing.

Felt like I'd drop in my 2 cents about some of the the negatives for the 350s 350s are the perfect bike for DIY enthusiasts for sure. I grew up working on the farm bikes, so I like the ease of servicing and cheap parts of the 350. Very simple bike for sure, yeah valve checks are a bit more frequent but when it only takes 30 minutes to do once a year I don't find it much of a hassle at all haha But for others that are not wrench monkeys, a Japanese bike or similar may be a better way to lean. The 350's are real tinkerers bikes. As far as the engine, I think I did maybe make the right choice getting the Hunter, as it apparently does have a different tune + I installed an aftermarket airbox and filter, so I find it just right. But I'm sure this bike will feel under powered for most riders who just expect more. Most people have a mental image of bikes are fast. I think you do just need to have different expectations with a fun little bike like the 350s. No 6th gear is a bit of a bummer I agree, I guess it's just because it wasnt designed for the highway they thought better to save the costs and keep the ticket price low. Again, I have the HNTR with the different tune + airbox so I think mine has a little more breath for the highway as well, so I maybe don't mind as much. I have had a couple of bad gears changes, but very rarely. I think less than or equal to other bikes I owned. It monstrously better than the nord 401s I've ridden. I did change my oil when I got the bike to Penrite Full synthetic at the first service (500km), so potentially that helps with the transmission. ... HNTR has gear indicator xD... We should meet up sometime, in Freo or something, to compare 350s haha Stay safe

Spot on review. I'm torn about whether extra power would be a good thing. On the one hand, I want to take my Classic to the Scottish Highlands but the journey from where I live is 450 miles just to get there which means motorways or extra days travel there and back, so an extra 10hp would help. On the other hand, for riding country lanes it's perfect as it is and I wouldn't want to change it at all. Thinking about a bike trailer for my camper van.
@RippleMoto

One thing that needs sorting is the speedo . Notorious for fogging ( mine does occasionally) which would be a really easy fix for Enfield during manufacturing. Used to 4 gear bikes 5 with this power its fine. Power? I ride at 50 to 60 so its enough for me. I'm retired so cleaning my Red and Chrome classic is therapeutic. Music on comfy seat and detail away its great. Sump guard certainly has help with keeping the engine clean.

Completely agree on the speedo, thats a really good insight. I stated gear indicator for beginners would be helpful as people new to riding would be looking at this a as well. I also stated that not having an indicator adds to the engaging ride, and that I secretly like it for that reason, maybe this wasn't made obvious enough?
