This Royal Enfield Diesel owner stood outside the Hindu temple of my friend's native village in Tamil Nadu, India.
We came for the day to meet his family and the beautiful old Mandir. The small village outside Kallakurichi is all about sugar cane. On the dusty street sides Jaggery (sugar cane juice) juicer stand use the same Greaves Cotton engines.
The bike, 1989 model, was converted from petrol in 1993 by a mechanic in Erode. A good idea, it now runs 70 km/l. Just like a Hero Honda but with a power and torque of 350cc diesel.
A Krishna sticker and rainbow of orange and red pin striping paint job.
Kick at the starter, black smoke at the exhaust and the heartbeat pulse of the engine comes alive. It's not shaking but smooth to drive says the owner.
Around us a group of curious kids laugh and say "mechanic engineer" maybe talking about me...
"No carburetor" our rider friend tells happily. "No spark plugs" I add to the joy. But what about cooling in Tamilnadu heat of the summer, I wonder. "Air cooling" he points to the fins on the cylinder. Then I take a closeup video around the bike: oil-bath air filter, fuel filter, clutch, a cow, an agriculture combine and elders sitting on the temple wall stone bench. And... what is that strange button on the fall/knee-guard? Oh... it's an engine-off lever, not the decompressor which is on the cylinder head.
Today original diesel motorcycles are available in Pondicherry and Madras (Chennai), he says as the kids around jump and joke with their Cricket bats while I shift my camera over the quiet village.
