Hello and welcome, today I'm performing the 310 mile first service on my wife's 2022 Royal Enfield meteor 350. I will be covering tappet adjustment and oil and oil filter change. I have time stamped each process. I do encourage owners to work on there machines because it gives you a better connection of the motorcycle, however I cannot guarantee this will not effect your warranty, but please proceed at your own risk.
Remove the rear back rest screws using a 6mm hex bit
remove the side rails with a 9mm hex bit
slide the rear set off
with a 10mm socket remove the rider seat
remove the tank bolt with a 8mm and 10mm socket
its a good idea to do this with an empty tank
gently lift the tank and slide back, get an assistant to hold the tank up
un plug the main fuel line, it has push clips either side
remove the rubber cover around the fuel pump plug, with your finger push the tab inwards and pull the plug
go to the right side and remove the 2 breather hoses, one is bigger than the other
lift the tank and put it in a safe place
remove the rocker bolts with a 10mm socket, start from left to right
remove the coil unit by unscrewing the 3 bolts, use a 10mm socket, there are 2 earth wire the go through 2 bolts
gently lift the rocker cover, leave the gasket on the cylinder block
grab a 14mm hex bit and unscrew the crank screw cap
make sure the seal stays in the screw cap
remove the spark plug with a 16mm socket
check spark plug gap, it should be between 0.7mm and 0.8mm
you dont have to do this but for illustration purpose im double checking im at top dead centre, here I place a clean screw driver into the park plug hole, here I can see when it lifts to the top the piston is then at top dead centre ready for adjustment, turn the crank anti clock wise
the camshaft gear will have a T on the top this should face plat with the rocker arm clamp
you can also check the valves have free play, if the dont, turn another rotation and try again
here are the valve gap measurements, 0.18mm for the exhaust and 0.08mm for the inlet
both valves were too tight, to adjust unscrew the 10mm lock nut and use a flat screw driver to turn, as you tighten keep the centre still it will take some trial and error but you will get there, once done turn the engine over twice and re check
install the spark plug
check there is no debris in the engine
slide on the rocker cover, gently place the seal into the groove with your fingers, you shouldn't need to replace the seal at your first service, no sealant is required if you have left it on the engine side. Once you are happy and you can see the rubber seated all the way around then tighten the rocker bolts to 10nm
clean the engine
screw the crank cap back on, just nip it up
install the coil pack and dont forget the 2 earth wires here
install the tank, make sure the hoses are not pinched, check the cables that run along the frame are not getting caught at the front of the tank locaters
install the bolt
start the engine and leave running for ten minutes checking for any leaks
while its running install the rider seat
then install the passenger seat
and finally the rear grab rails and back rest
leave the rails loose until you screw the back rest in
clean all the areas you have touched
now we are ready to change the oil and filter
here is the oil I use, it exceeds manufactures specifications, they recommend semi synthetic but im switching to fully as this is the brand I always use and its vastly available
start by turning off the engine
allow to stand for ten minutes
remove the oil filler cap
place a drain bowl underneath
unscrew the filter plate underneath the engine using a 10mm socket
loose the bolts and allow to drip for 5 minutes
fully loosen the screws
pull out the plastic filter
place on a rag
unscrew the crank case drain bolt with a 17mm socket
unscrew the oil filter cover with a 6mm allen socket
remove the filter and not orientation of the filter, spring facing outwards
clean the area with parts cleaner, this cleaner is rubber safe
grab the new filter and soak it in clean oil
clean all the parts
keeping the filter dirt free place in the filter hole with spring facing out
firmly push the plate and even screw the bolts in working around as you tighten
tighten to 10nm
tighten the 17mm drain bolt
place the plastic filter in and tighten the bolts, only nip these to 8nm
clean the area
fill the jug with 900ml of oil
slow pour it into the engine
grab the 1 litre bottle and pour 700ml in
check the oil level inspection glass as you go along, make sure its above the minimum mark
start the engine, idle for 2 minutes, turn off wait one minute and re check level, put the rest of the oil in, this bike takes 1.7 to 1.9 litres of oil

Just a quick note, the manaul says use 15w50, however I'm using 10w50 oil because the climate in the UK isn't as hot, so 10w50 is ideal. Please check with your local dealer before you decide what oil grade to use. 😃

Hi Nick. Just a few observations from me following your video to adjust the valve gear on my Classic 350. I found it virtually impossible to accurately reseat the cover back on the gasket with the gasket in situ. I removed the rear electrical connections that impede removal and replacement of the rocker cover. I also removed the little finned piece on the near side just beneath the rocker cover. I removed the old gasket completely with the D section rubber piece covered by the small finned piece. I then fitted the gasket into the rocker cover groove and reassembled the two together. Without those 2 electrical connections in the way it slid back on easily without any wrestling! I am not knocking your video, it was excellent. I am just noting for other's benefit that I found it necessary to take a slightly different approach.

For me, this was the most helpful video for me to service my Hunter 350. 👍 Like others have said, both valves were too tight. I bought a 500km service kit and oil from Hitchcocks Motorcycles but didn’t use any of the supplied gaskets. So they are saved for the next service 👍. Hunter 350 indicator reset is to find trip B with ignition switched on, then press and continuously hold i button for 10 seconds, keep it pressed and switch off the ignition, count 15-20 seconds while still pressing the i button, then switch on ignition and continue pressing the i button. The spanner symbol should flash 5 times before disappearing and then you can finally release the i button 👍

A first class demo. I would just add , it's always a good idea to put a little copper grease on the spark plug thread. The coating on the plug can react with the aluminium of the cylinder. It's rare, but its a big problem if it happens.

So others know, this pertains to the new Royal Enfield Classic 350 as well. Best, clearest video so far on these two topics. I'm using 15w50 Motul 5100 here in California, and I think it likes it. Still not sure about the warranty and valves, but need to decide quick as I'm getting to 300miles now. Dealers want outrageous money here to do that - $500 and $630US if you can believe it. Anyways, this bike is a load of fun, and I appreciate well-done videos like this one! Ride Safe 🙏🏼

Not sure if you got an answer on this or not Scott. But in the US, you have the right to service your own bike or car or add on accesories without impacting the warranty. Or to have that work done by a third party. Harley were recently heavily fined for contravening owners rights in this area. I was advised to keep receipts for service parts (oil, filter etc) as proof that the needed service work was done. I don't know if the UK is the same way in this respect. I also got some crazy quotes for having the first service done ($320 and $450), hence why I'll be doing it myself. Paying almost 10% of the cost of the bike to have a valve adjust and oil change is extortionate especially when I hear folks in the UK are paying between 120 to 200 pounds for the same.
@scottboettcher
@scottboettcher Жыл бұрын
@@bgilgall I did not get an answer, but like you I do the work keep receipts. Keep RECORDS, etc. That’s exactly my point to pay 10% of the cost of the bike for a service that takes less than two hours is obscene. I found a good local mechanic who has a shop and charge me 30% of that or $165 I’m still using the MOTUL oil, and unless I see something telling me otherwise I guess I’ll stick with it for now

What document shows the tappets' gaps? I dont see that in my USA maintenance manual. FWIW, I just did mine thanks to this video and zoomed into the screenshot of your manual to double check. Exhaust was hadn't move in 300mi, the intake was a wee tight.

Great video, I'll be following all your instructionals for my Meteor. And I think you all covered Interceptor and NC750, both of which are shortlisted for my next bike. No need to change the crush washer on the plug? On my ratty past bikes I admit to reusing them if they still looked in shape and I couldn't find my replacement ones at the time, seemed not to leak from there afterwards (they had other worse leaks anyway!)

Great video! I followed this and everything went smooth. However, on crank shaft cap and oil filter cap I’m getting oil misting (not really a leak). I used torque wrench on them. Any ideas on why this is happenening? Thanks for doing video. My dealer wanted $750 for this.

Thanks Nick, for this excellent clear and complete video. Understand that hex bits and Allen key are the same? Interested to hear why fully synthetic oil is better than semi-synthetic? First video for this job, that mentions checking the spark plug gap - thanks! Love that Meteor's colour, but I have to say I prefer my Halcyon Grey Classic Reborn ,-) The dealer said that checking the tappets "wasn't necessary!

tappets are 100 percent necessary at first service, do not skip this, only a non RE dealer would say this.

@@nicksepisode unfortunately it seems many RE dealers don't do it to avoid cheesing off owners with a hefty bill for the first service (which I believe is free in India). I wrote to RE and they replied very quickly, and were concerned that their Official dealer wasn't following the service manual. I think I will do it myself. Many thanks again.

I followed your videos instructions and although it was a bit of a pig to do, I did the adjustments (inlet was very tight). Now (of course haha) it seems to be noisier "clickety clickety" than before. Stupidly I didn't record the engine noise before. Some posts on forums suggest that with the clearances being tight from the factory, the engines are quieter, and once set to 0,08/0,18 then the tappets are louder? Would very much appreciate your comments / suggestions. I will do the job again and check once more (I didn't turn the engine and recheck as you suggested) So that could mean improper settings (i.e. what a plonker). Many thanks!

Thank you for the video. I have two questions: 1. You showed images of pages with the torque specs in your video. Where are they from (Is there a service manual available?)? 2. What is the “parts cleaner” spray you were using? It looks handy.

@airborne15545 the noise should be the same as before. Take your feeler gauge to your mechanic and show them the specs to make sure you have used the correct gauges. The numbers can get confusing on them

Just a quick one, won't using fully synthetic oil increase the running in mileage due to the reduced friction of the synthetic oil 🤔 I'd have thought sticking with the semi synthetic till at least 1200 miles and then switch would be better.
