For me, this was the most helpful video for me to service my Hunter 350. 👍 Like others have said, both valves were too tight. I bought a 500km service kit and oil from Hitchcocks Motorcycles but didn’t use any of the supplied gaskets. So they are saved for the next service 👍. Hunter 350 indicator reset is to find trip B with ignition switched on, then press and continuously hold i button for 10 seconds, keep it pressed and switch off the ignition, count 15-20 seconds while still pressing the i button, then switch on ignition and continue pressing the i button. The spanner symbol should flash 5 times before disappearing and then you can finally release the i button 👍

Best video I have seen for the valve adjustment. Never really wanted to tackle that job. I normally do the service on mine every 3000 miles. (oil and oil & air filter change) But when it comes to that 6000-mile valve check/adjustment I take it to my dealer. They charge a pretty penny to do it. But as someone else commented you do a good job on the video so a person can see what's going on. Some videos I have seen are poor quality, they go so fast or their hands or something gets in the way so you can't see what they are doing. A person watching ends up having to pause the video and rewind it several times trying to figure out what they just did. I still don't know if I want to attempt it, but if I do, I will look up this video again.

Thanks that means a lot. The only thing that id say, be very careful on tightening the head bolts and valve lock nuts, these are often over tightened and snap, definitely get a torque wrench. the other tricky issue is the rocker cover gasket, its very fiddly to get in, make sure its all flush, if it is all the head bolts when screw down and stop the same amount with using your fingers, just triple check the head is flush before getting the tools on the bolts. one last tricky thing is the plugs for the tank, you need good fingers to squeeze the clips, dont force them, if you give the plug a push in then pull out this helps. and get someone to hold the tank for you, dont rush, give yourself all day to do this job, take breaks and enjoy the experienced, you've got this

Not sure if you got an answer on this or not Scott. But in the US, you have the right to service your own bike or car or add on accesories without impacting the warranty. Or to have that work done by a third party. Harley were recently heavily fined for contravening owners rights in this area. I was advised to keep receipts for service parts (oil, filter etc) as proof that the needed service work was done. I don't know if the UK is the same way in this respect. I also got some crazy quotes for having the first service done ($320 and $450), hence why I'll be doing it myself. Paying almost 10% of the cost of the bike to have a valve adjust and oil change is extortionate especially when I hear folks in the UK are paying between 120 to 200 pounds for the same.
@scottboettcher Жыл бұрын
@@bgilgall I did not get an answer, but like you I do the work keep receipts. Keep RECORDS, etc. That’s exactly my point to pay 10% of the cost of the bike for a service that takes less than two hours is obscene. I found a good local mechanic who has a shop and charge me 30% of that or $165 I’m still using the MOTUL oil, and unless I see something telling me otherwise I guess I’ll stick with it for now

Hi Nick. Just a few observations from me following your video to adjust the valve gear on my Classic 350. I found it virtually impossible to accurately reseat the cover back on the gasket with the gasket in situ. I removed the rear electrical connections that impede removal and replacement of the rocker cover. I also removed the little finned piece on the near side just beneath the rocker cover. I removed the old gasket completely with the D section rubber piece covered by the small finned piece. I then fitted the gasket into the rocker cover groove and reassembled the two together. Without those 2 electrical connections in the way it slid back on easily without any wrestling! I am not knocking your video, it was excellent. I am just noting for other's benefit that I found it necessary to take a slightly different approach.

Now (of course haha) it seems to be noisier "clickety clickety" than before. Stupidly I didn't record the engine noise before. Just a quick one, won't using fully synthetic oil increase the running in mileage due to the reduced friction of the synthetic oil 🤔 I'd have thought sticking with the semi synthetic till at least 1200 miles and then switch would be better.
@nicksepisode2 жыл бұрын
Oil will be changed at 1k anyway I don't belive 300 miles is enough really.

Thank you for the video. I have two questions: 1. You showed images of pages with the torque specs in your video. Where are they from (Is there a service manual available?)? 2. What is the “parts cleaner” spray you were using? It looks handy.

its literally brake cleaner. you can find the manual on a royal enfield forum, link is here in the comments somewhere.

It's just a T bar. You can get them at most tool shops

Nice to see an engineer working on a bike. Some videos I watch, make me cringe, with poor working practices and lack of any real knowledge. I am getting to like the Meteor more and more, as a potential next bike. What parts cleaner do you use, or are you not allowed to say? Thanks again Nick, for a very useful video.

Great video, I made the mistake of tightening the engine cover bolts too tight and snapped one, thank god I was able to get it out and order a new one…. Watched another video which says to tighten them hand tight, and then give an quarter turn…anyway you can comment on this with your opinion on tightening those bolts

@@nicksepisode thank you, also did you notice the tappets sounding more noisy after the service? My bike runs so much better after the service but I had a guy tell me the tapping noise is not good and I might have adjusted them too loose, but he doesn’t even own a royal enfield😞 I’m hoping it’s just the way the bike is supposed to sound
@nicksepisode Жыл бұрын
@airborne15545 the noise should be the same as before. Take your feeler gauge to your mechanic and show them the specs to make sure you have used the correct gauges. The numbers can get confusing on them

Hi, I should've seen your video first on how to adjust valves! Done mine yesterday and they were both tighter than spec, now I seam to hear the valves clicking more! How can you unmistakably know you're on the compression stroke TDC? Would it be possible to loosen the exhaust valve while on the exhaust stroke TDC? I used locking tool and could easily loosen and adjust both valves... Also for oil grade, my RE dealer sold me full synthetic 20W50 oil for my first oil change.. because of city heat.. I'm in Canada, not LA! Many thanks!

What document shows the tappets' gaps? I dont see that in my USA maintenance manual. FWIW, I just did mine thanks to this video and zoomed into the screenshot of your manual to double check. Exhaust was hadn't move in 300mi, the intake was a wee tight.

Would you recommend putting sealant on the Rocker cover gasket if you have disturbed it on the first service, And if so, do you put sealant all around the Top and bottom, sparingly? I'd be most grateful for your opinion? As I have a slight leak after doing my first service on my Royal Enfield Hunter 350 And I'm thinking that the only thing that would stop it now is my new gasket (which leaked) , and I should do it with sealant now, Cheers Paul Foster
@nicksepisode Жыл бұрын
Put the gasket in the rocker cover first. Smear a thin layer of silicone sealant on the rubber. Try that
