Thanks so much for making these great videos, I have spent hours trying to figure out exactly why my 500 bullet was not starting - and when she did it looked like a smoke grenade had been let off. I reckon there will be a lot less swearing when trying to start her up ;)

Simply superb! My RE use to throw oil from the breather pipe each time I started it after three or four days.With yr top dead center technique seems it's sorted.I was not sure if I will find some help here but thanks to you,Sir.M finally out of this worry.

Ok good vidio. Wet sumping can also occur when the oil in the timing chest drains back along the timing shaft. On a 500cc Indian model of RE there should be a rubber oil seal where this shaft comes out. If this seal is worn then wet sumping will occur no matter what you do. You have to take off the timing chest cover to fix this. If you have an English RE there is a brass bush that fits in the timing shaft housing to stop the oil seeping back into the sump. This gets worn and wet sumping will occur. You can take the engine apart and drive out the brass bush and in its place you can put a 22x28x4 oil seal and this will fix the wet sumping from the timing chest for good as once this is done you only have to change the oil seal if it wears out. To change the Indian made RE oil seal just put the motorcycle at top dead centre. Open the timing chest and take the worm drive off (left hand thread). Then take the cams out making sure that the timing marks are lined up. Take off the timing pinion (small gear that drives the cams) being careful not to loose the woodruff key. Now you will be able to see the black rubber oil seal. Get a small diameter (thickness of a needle) piece of hardened or high tensile wire and put a very small hook in the end. Now you can push this hook past the small seals sealing lips and turning the wire just a bit to hook the seal just pull it out. Then you can replace it with a new seal by just pressing the new seal over the timing shaft and into position in the housing. Now put everything back by lining up the timing marks and if the engine is still in the same position as when all the gears were removed it should start and run ok. If the engine has moved at all it will have to be timed again. PS some Indian RE did not have a brass bush or a rubber seal as they just left the alloy as a neat fit to stop the oil seeping back into the sump, BUT when these motors wear there is nothing that can be done to stop them from wet sumping short of buying another set of new engine cases or you could get a machine shop to machine a seal housing in for you where it should have been and then you could use the proper seal for the timing shaft oil control.

Nice informative vid again Hoobs, I would just like to add that you must be carefull not to overtighten the sump drain plug, the alloy is not the strongest i the world so take care!!! it's a bugger to fix. Don't ask how I know. Dave

The oil should be a little above the "add" line on the dipstick when the engine's cold. Check it when it's warm and it will be at or near the "full" line.

HI " Some Prematex or similar silicone sealer on the bolt threads should stop it, but that might make it difficult to remove in the future. " IN MY CASE I THINK THE SAME HAS HAPPENED SOME MECH SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN DOING THIS NA DNOW WHEN I AM TRYING TO UNSCREW IT IN ORDER TO DRAIN ITS NOT ALOWING ME TOO . IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY TO UNCREW IT WHEN SLICONE IS ALREADY USED ? OR IS THERE ANY OTHER WAY TO DRAIN IT.

I did a oil change today and drained the sump. Now my Bullet starts with a single kick, something it hasn't done in a year and half. I'm leaking oil from the second nut, the middle one. Is there a way to seal it?

Sir , I have 1985 bullet , I am getting oil from my engine breather pipe is splilling into the chain, is it normal? I don't have smoke issue, but during winter it take a lot more time to start than others bike..
@hoohoohoblin7 жыл бұрын
+anirudh chauhan It is normal for some oil to come out of the breather pipe.
@anirudhchauhan16987 жыл бұрын
hoohoohoblin thank you, and what should be oil level? is it should be between high and low or at high? my mechanic adviced me to put oil little above from high point, because according to him to prevent the loss of oil as it is spliting out from breather pipe. what your idea about this?
@hoohoohoblin7 жыл бұрын
I keep it at the high mark but don't go above it. I'm not sure what the experts say, though. I just do what the manual says.

Careful with Silicone it is very bad for going into the oil system as little silicone balls and blocking oilways, we have often seen devastating damage on parts that come into our engineering shop. If you do use, only use good quality and tiny amounts, if it squeeze out on the outside then it probably has done so on the inside!

anyone there that can help me out with the problem that my bullet a few days ago started to press oil out at the front of the pump housing. Didn"t do that ever, but I had the big ebd bearing replaced and it started to leak after a few hundred miles since that repair.
@hoohoohoblin9 жыл бұрын
I wonder if it is just a bad gasket. You may want to open it up and check.

+hoohoohoblin IThanks for your reaction. I just did open the front drainplug with the long filter in it and a lot of shiny flakes were sticking to the filter. I have a picture but cannot copy that in, unless you have a suggestion how to do that.

Hi, I've got a 1995 Royal Enfield Bullet that is acutely wet sumping! I am frustrated that no one here in Vancouver, B.C. is familiar with these old bike and after spending a ton of $. on a complete top end rebuild... Rockers, head, barrel piston, rings, etc... The bike is like a Nazi death camp (huge clouds of blue smoke) for a good 10 minutes, when kicked over after a few hours!!! Was suggested that 3 main causes would be; (1.) Faulty engine gasket between the main engine cases! (2.) Timing side oil seal (from looking at the exploded engine diagram) I can only figure that would be the timing side roller bearing! But do not know if the cases must be separated to replace it!!?? (3.) Faulty timing cover. Suggested repair: Replace with a new one. I lived in North India, for 4 years and relied on the Enfield Wallahs to deal with mechanical issues at the princely sum of about 100 Rupee's an hour. Unfortunately the bike I shipped home to Canada has been the Enfield from hell!!! Any advice on this wet sumping issue!?
@hoohoohoblin9 жыл бұрын
My bike doesn't do it if I always remember to put the piston at TDC when I park it. This is the simplest solution. It took me about a year to figure this problem out, so I understand your frustration. Here is a great explanation of the problem and some solutions. www.hitchcocksmotorcycles.com/pictures/content13/wet_sumping.pdf
