@@annaswanson5903 my culture doesn't mind marrying your cousin. But you uncle, now that's taboo as hell. I knew their blood tree was weird but I never knew it was that convoluted. I thought it was just cousin marriage and was perplexed for a while because it's not a problem in my country. Turns out it was much much worse.
@piarateking80945 жыл бұрын
@@hajarmdn4883 actually there have been lots of problems with cousin marriages especially when there have been multiple generations of cousin marriages the same thing happens as what happened to the king. you lose genetic diversity within the gene pool and recessive genes are more likely to come up as cousins share a set of grandparents
@calenlass11125 жыл бұрын
@@hajarmdn4883 If you only marry 1st cousin to 1st cousin in many successive generations, though, you raise the likelihood that the gene pool will shrink and contain many duplicate recessive genes that otherwise would be phased out over time. The gene pool shrinks more quickly with niece-to-uncle or nephew-to-aunt marriage because of the statistical likelihood that the niece or nephew shares more genes with their parent's sibling, but simply turning to just 2nd cousins (or even 1st cousins one generation removed) the chance of compounding recessive genetic problems actually drops to that of any random woman and random man within a generation or so. The mathematics are involved, but rather straightforward, and you can work them out using dog or cat traits (spots vs no spots, normal tail vs bob tail) as examples with Punnett Squares. Genetic diversity is VERY IMPORTANT! :)

I love this video I think of it often, actually. Here's why: I loved the phrase "the most Habsburg Habsburg to ever Habsburg." But also, in small bits there is a slight vibe of disability hierarchy and/or disparaging certain conditions. I found it jarring in this video, because I know you are aware of/have mentioned the hierarchy of disabilities in other videos, so I'm certain you never intended this vibe to be here. But that might be something to watch out for in how you frame things. As always, I love your videos and they bring me calmness, joy, and geeky goodness. I'm so glad you're here. :)

I think a lot of people need to see the importance of mental illness and learn to separate this idea that depression fuels creativity, or that one must be sad to create art. I've heard many people say that his talent came from sorrow and I hate this idea that people with mental illness need to be mentally ill to be creative. Horrible stigma.

The odd thing about my home country is, it is perfectly legal to marry your cousin. I think I heard something along the lines of maybe the couple needs to have the approval of the family or something, but more distant relatives are a-okay to marry? Of course it still sounds weird to most people and they wouldn't consider their cousins that way, but the way I've heard some foreign people talking about family relations, that you can have exactly zero shared ancestry to be an acceptable partner, is a bit harsh to me. I mean, if I meet a person that I fall in love with, and it turns out we share a great-great-great-great-grandparent, I wouldn't really think it was something uncomfortable. If you're that distant relatives, you share basically no blood at all. But yeah, I don't think my country is particularly incestuous, the cousin thing might be legal but it's still such a rare thing, it's just that we have been a very secluded country with a small population for a long period of history and have only in the last century started to open up, I guess? :D

Marrying your 1st cousin is perfectly legal in the US & UK, & not even that rare in the US, tho it's more common with ie Amish, fundamental Mormons etc. In the UK it's mostly South Asian families. Rather than outlawing it, governments try to educate people, but loads of kids are born with severe disabilities- a doctor in Pennsylvania specialises in treating a few diseases only found in Amish communities. So your country isn't unusual at all, imo!
