Hi Jessica, I work as a guide at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, the Habsburg family's summer residence and also the place where Maria Theresias family including Maria Christina and later on, Isabella of Parma with her husband Joseph lived. I really, really, truly appreciate your video and because, as you say, history™ very much paints Isabella and Mimi just as close friends (GAL PALS!) I often tell their love story in my tours to change the narrative around them a bit. Thank you so much for this piece of gay Austrian history that is so often overlooked, also from me personally as a bisexual Austrian woman/historian :D Also, nice work trying to pronounce all of Maria Theresia's titles and the German place names! Maria Teresa was actually King of Hungary. Like the Main Ruler™. Her husband was King of Austria and she the Queen, but he was like a royal consort to Hungary. Sidenote - Mimi's palace was built from scratch next to the old, cold castle. Said castle is being reconstructed to include the baroque palace and gardens from Mimi's time. Big bro Joseph was responsible for the accident that caused the castle to burn down, it stayed like that until 1960' when it was reconstructed. But the baroque parts are an addition from the early 2010'. I happen to be a tour guide for that city. Hit me up, if your in the area.
@Persephonemybff4 жыл бұрын
Sorry but this is all wrong! Maria Theresia was arch duchess of her ancestral lands (including but certainly not limited to Austria), after the death of her father, which were part of the German Holy Roman Empire. She was also Queen of Hungary (which was much bigger than it is today). Her Husband was also Holy Roman Emperor after Maria Theresia dad (something woman could not be).
@TonyThimble4 жыл бұрын
@@Persephonemybff what exactly are your sources on this? I agree on her husband being the Holy Roman Emperor, but she was King of Hungary as the nobles pledged their allegiance to her specifically. MT led a war with Prussia mostly to secure her kingdom+inheritance and won because of this help from Hungary. Here's the link to the Coronation Church where she was crowned. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Martin%27s_Cathedral,_Bratislava Notice how there is no epithet like wife of next to her name? It's because she was no appendage to a male ruler for Hungary. She was the ruler, which at that time was shown by giving her the title of King.
@Persephonemybff4 жыл бұрын
@@TonyThimble that part was correct, I didn't say it wasn't. The next statement just wasn't.
@TonyThimble4 жыл бұрын
@@Persephonemybff prefacing your statement with "this is all wrong" is unclear on you agreeing with some of my statement. Sorry. MT also definitely was Queen of Austria. We even learn about her as Empress in grade school because the Austrio-Hungarian monarchy used the title of Kaiser which is emperor in translation. K und K in German means königlich (King's) and kaiserlich (kaizer's/emperor's) Monarchie/y.
@Persephonemybff4 жыл бұрын
@@TonyThimbleok here is were u got confused: the K&K monarchy was established nearly 100 years after Maria Theresia died. It was established by Franz II. who was the last holy roman Emperor, dissolved the holy roman empire and made himself Franz I of the Austro Hungarian empire. During Maria Theresia time, Austria was still a particularly the Holy Roman Empire, therefore it could not have a king, it was an arch duchy (Erzherzogtum). Maria Theresia is referred to as empress because her husband was Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. She herself, in her own right, was "only" arch duchess under him. Does that clear things up?

The Habsburg's were super Catholic and Mary (Maria in German) was one of the family's patron saints, that's why all of the girls carried her name (Joseph, for example, was one for the boys). The multiple Maria Elisabeth's and Maria Carolina's did happen because the older one's died as infants, so they were reusing their names.
@Vely14 жыл бұрын
I think that used to be a common thing to do. Just look at Johann Sebastian Bach and his father, brothers and sons. And the first Maria Elisabeth died after three years while both Maria Karolinas didn't live for more than one year, so the names were reused.

My father's family was catholic, and his mother's generation were *all* named Mary. my nana was the eldest, so she was the only one of the ~10 sisters that actually _went by_ Mary, while the rest went by their middle names (which doubled as their confirmation names, and often they took them on legally after marriage - Mary Theresa Cabin might become Theresa Cabin LaRose, for example). Confusingly, my nana and her (1-2 years younger) sister actually had the _exact same name_ - they were both Mary Alice, but my nana went by Mary + her sister went by Alice 😹

Mimi's life may have mirrored that of every lesbian movie that came after, but it is lovely that she did get a "happily ever after" at the end with a man whom she loved and who sounds like a class act. Preserving and publishing Isabella's love letters to his wife, clearly (to me) because he understood how cherished that relationship had been, is such a beautiful act of devotion by Prince Albert. Of course we all wish Isabella herself had a happier fate, but I personally have no doubt that she'd be glad that her love ended up with someone who valued and respected her so.

I WANT THE HISTORICAL DRAMA OF THEIR STORY SO BADLY!

Isabella and Mimi were second cousins, so their union was traditional in at least one sense.

I don’t know where else to say this but my history prof in uni is currently teaching us Sappho and saying she was completely straight with no female attraction and I’m so mad bc I chose to do my final on her thinking I could finally do a paper on being bi and now I have to write pretending she was straight. Thank you for coming to my ted talk
@comradewindowsill42534 жыл бұрын
...how?? she’s literally the ur-example of a lesbian! she lived on an island called lesbos for which lesbianism is named because of her and her *very* *gay* poems ...your prof is whack, man, is all i can say
@louisac3034 жыл бұрын
hold up hold up the book is called "I'm dying of love for you"???? and there are historians saying that that's not gay?!

I’m straight but I absolutely love these recent videos you are posting. I think it’s so good to go over history and definitely talk about the parts of history we all looked at a little side-eyed when they tried to mask it to fit the “norms” of those times. I think these would actually make fantastic podcast episodes

The hair in the portrait at 15:10 is on point. Also I love growing up in an era where people are calling out historians for not noticing or being willfully ignorant of the obvious.

I was so excited to get this video today!!! I love your voice. I’m able to read less and less because of my macular degeneration. History is my favorite, and listening to you tell history is better then listening to Sir Attenborough.

Hiiii thank you for covering my favourite princess story of all times!!! Also for the same names in the family, those were only repeated because the first daughters of such names like Marie Carolina died as infants. Albert and Mimi also fell in love only after Isabela passed away, even though they already knew each other by that point! Albert was so sweet and supportive about the whole relationship too, he is one of the only historical male figures I actually like! How I wish they made a movie or a documentary about these three...

The real shame is that no one gave that one lady a baby name book.

Unfortunately, American, Swedish, and Russian doesn’t really help you out. You just get to add the guilt of three more empires.

I think it was pretty common to just name all your daughters Maria and then give them another first name by which they were called in everyday life. The male equivalent here in Switzerland by the was was Joseph, I know of at least three families (all born in the first half of the 20. century) where at least three sons were called Joseph and then got another first name to keep them apart...

10:38 Oh, my goodness! That reminds me of how the legend of Orpheus and Eurydice was used to symbolise the forbidden love shared between the two female protagonists in the French film 'Portrait of a Lady On Fire.'

Jessica I love your content, but as an Italian I must say that she is Isabella of Parma, with an R Edit: sometimes it is written correctly, but sometimes it is misspelled in the subtitles
@carameldare4 жыл бұрын
The subtitles are probably autogenerated. Her accent is non-rhotic, meaning she doesn't pronounce rs after vowels, so technology just hears Pama.
@johannageisel53904 жыл бұрын
The video description also says "Palma".
@carameldare4 жыл бұрын
@@johannageisel5390 well I can't explain that lol except to say thaf we all make spelling mistakes.
@jokerzbabe134 жыл бұрын
You do see it written parma in the video as well, but keep in mind she has an English accent, so she elongates her vowels.

A nice german documentation is "So liebten die Habsburger", translated 'this is how the Habsburgs loved' is where I first heard of Isabella of Parma and of her love to Mimi, to whom she wrote an actual letter containing the words "Ich küsse dein erzenglisches Arscherl" (Arscherl is a south german/austrian abreviation of Arsch, already not so formal word, like butt) translated by me to: "I kiss your arcangelic buttocks" Isn't that nice, and it does imply they shared a bed. Oh; and Isabella of Parma had an incredibly nice and long name: Isabella Maria Luisa Antonietta Ferdinanda Giuseppina Saveria Dominica Giovanna of Bourbon-Parma

i dont doubt they had a romantic relation but technically calling them best friends isnt wrong. it just omits the fact that the person/people you are in a romantic relationship with SHOULD be your friend lmao.
