The backstory of this, if you want to know, is that the Dr. was aware of the photo (I can't remember how) possibly orchestrating the circumstances of the photo. His goggles were intentionally engineered to fail, allowing the operator to see a nanosecond/microsecond of 096 face. Too short for the operator to notice, but long enough for 096 to sense that he was seen. He then set a series of events in motion in which the photograph ended up in the hands of the farmer at the same time that Daniels went on his geology trip so that he would not be at the facility when 096 breached containment. His reason for orchestrating the breach and the non-functionality of the goggles was to, as this short film showed, convince the O5 council to allow him to try to kill 096. You can watch several animated features of the attempts to kill it. In some retellings of this Breach, 096 ran through a town before getting to the end target. Dr. Oleksi was a party to this intentional breach and grassed Dr. Daniels up, which is the rest of the story leading up to the short film, here. If I remember right, the foundation was able to fix the intentional time delay Dr. Daniels had put into the goggles and make them work properly. Obvs this comment is 2 years too late, but it might be good for anyone just finding this video.

I personally don't think the doctor added a delay rather he purposefully didn't add a delay, no ai(unless it is also anomalous) would be able to scrub faster that the speed of light so you would need to add a slight delay to give the ai time to scrub the face out before showing the operator the camera feed from the goggles.

In order to trick the 05 council into changing their mind, he orchestrated a series of failures, the point of which was to show that 096 is too dangerous to simply "contain". Basically, "If we don't kill it, this will only happen again and again." The point of making the goggles fail was to make it seem like, even that advanced countermeasure was no good against 096, adding more weight to his argument.

They actually give another reason for not killing the SCPs. Basically because the SCPs defy the logical rules of the universe many of the SCPs become more dangerous and hostile AFTER being "killed". I can't remember it's name but there is a series that focuses on this for a season. They decided to try destroying the unkillable lizard by throwing it into the sun. Unfortunately it adapted to the solar environment and went from an already dangerous creature to a universe ending solar beast ( basically a space dragon ). That season ended with that version of the SCP foundation merging their minds with the minds of their alternate dimensional twins in their neighboring dimension. Thus warning them not to make their mistakes.

iirc, 1609 was the chair. That scp was not dangerous, so attempted termination did not need to and shouldn't have happened but the GOC are dumb. To answer your question around 9:40 Most of these things are either indestructible, exist in separate dimensions/time periods, create others of themselves, or simply return after they’re destroyed. Others are too beneficial in the long run to be destroyed, despite how dangerous they can be, while others require co-testing with a completely separate SCP in order to negate or destroy.

One article connected to SCP-096's actual page details how a Class-D who was an artist was lowered something like 16000 fathoms below sea-level and shown a photo of SCP-096. They then asked the Class-D to draw a picture of what he saw. In the meantime, SCP-096 breached containment and proceeded to dive all the way down the the diving bell that housed the Class-D, breaching the diving bell and killing him. This is how they found that video and photo images containing SCP-096's face can trigger it, but artistic renditions can't.

You also may be wondering how they even got a realistic interpretation of 096’s face (If you don’t already know) They got a Class-D who use to be a tattoo artist, they submerged him underwater in this submarine like capsule thing about 4km (I think) away from the site, they gave him a photo of 096 and he was told to draw a picture of the face and put it in a waterproof container for later collection. 096 took the fastest route towards the CD and dived into the water soon after the CD put the drawing in the waterproof container, 096 broke through the wall of the capsule and killed the CD.

There are three main reasons as to why the foundation tries to avoid killing something. The first you already said, they can test them to help the contain other anomalies. The second is they simply can't and it's safer to lock it up than try to kill it. The third is the fear it won't stay dead. What will happen if you lock it up is more predictable than if you try to kill it. I think there are a few scps that where not dangerous, but after failed termination attempts they become hostile.

the reason why the scp foundation doesnt destroy the scp's like the global occult coalitions is because they are anomalous and they may become more dangerous if destroyed. there are logs which show a example of this, but there are also scp's like scp-682 who the scp foundation are constantly trying to terminate to no avail.

This one is adapted from a story on the wiki itself. See nothing in SCP is technically "canon" so youre allowed to make your own and no one has to follow one single storyline. The story has a lot more detail I believe. SCP-096 is the Shy Guy. If you see its face it will know. No matter how far, no matter how high, no matter what you're behind. It will know and it will find you. The foundation wants to kill it but its near indestructible.

Since nobody in the top comments really explained it, the reason the goggles didn't work is because there was a slight delay between viewing its face and the AI recognizing that it was 096's face meaning they were watching its face for a split second, the last guy succeeded because while viewing its mouth was enough to get the AI to register it it didn't trigger 096

So to make it more clear: the o5 are on the top of the SCP foundation hierarchy and control the foundation itself. There are 13 o5s , tasked to control the different parts of the foundation, for example: an o5 can control the mobile task force, while the other one controls the scientific department. They have their own clearance level, which is the highest and have to be protected the most.

Some SCP's like 096 or 682 are extremely resilient to any damage at all. And they'd rather keep them contained by any means possible than to kill them if they could. The SCP community goes extremely deep into detail and you should check out.

This is a bit late but one of the reasons would be what happened with SCP-1609, to keep it simple: a chair that teleported to those who need to sit down, the GOC put it in a woodchipper, that turned it into a pile of scrap that teleported part of itself into the loungs of everyone near them that looks formal, military or angry of sorts. a chair that helped people turned deadly.

Each scp has a unique mechanic in more ways then one each one has a safety level to it The Foundation concerns itself with containment, first and foremost. A box is a container. The box metaphor is an apt summary of each class. Safe - put the thing in a box, nothing weird happens. Euclid - put the thing in a box, and keep an eye on it because weird things might happen anyway. Keter - put the thing in a box, watch the box carefully, and pray the box works, because the weird things are too dangerous. Thaumiel - a thing that can be used as a box for other, more dangerous things.

You got to read about the antique wooden chair for why destroying the anomaly isn't the best choice. in short, it was a peaceful chair that just teleported around a small property. GOC decided to throw it in a wood chipper. Now it teleports as wood shavings into your lungs if you upset it. It went from safe to Euclid.

Fun fact: That wasn't supposed to happen. Some GOC agent was a complete idiot, so instead of waiting for a furnace to arrive/get done burning something, they chucked it into a woodchipper. It was explained in another SCP why they didn't kill the SCPs blindly, when they destroyed that specific SCP, it came back and became hostile towards the foundation.

S.C.P = Secure. Contain. Protect. The reason why they don't kill them is cuz they are an orginization focused on containment, the SCP universe actually has groups which only aim to kill SCP's. Oh and there's also a small issue, that you can't kill like 80% of the SCP's, for example. SCP 096 you can blow him up or do whatever u want but he will always regenerate, and nothing can destroy his bones

Why SCP doesn't kill is explained through a few articles where the GOC (European led equivalent organization that tries to kill everything even slightly anomalous and has astronomically higher fatality rates as a direct result) decided to kill one, failed, and made it much worse. One of my favorites is a helpful teleporting chair that turned into a pile of teleporting murder mulch.

There are several reasons why they don’t kill scp’s 1. Some SCPs are either too valuable to destroy or can’t be destroyed 2. The Foundations boundless curiosity which makes them choose securing the anomaly over human life 3. Some SCPs that do get destroyed either delete this save file we call earth or cause some other issue (such as the teleporting chair that goes wherever people need to sit which got put through a wood chipper and now the mulch kills anything affiliated with the culprits)
