The thing I find interesting about WW2 is that the monarchs of the majority of the countries Hitler invaded fled to the UK but still sent messages to their country to bring hope to those still living there. The only monarch that didn't flee was King Christian X of Denmark, who walked around on a horse in Copenhagen every day without guards he quickly became a symbol of resistance.

fun fact: Operation Catapult, a British plan to neutralise or destroy French ships to prevent them falling into German hands in the aftermath of the Allied defeat in the Battle of France. The British bombardment of the base killed 1,297 French servicemen, sank a battleship and damaged five other ships, for a British loss of five aircraft shot down and two crewmen killed. The British attack was almost universally condemned in France and resentment festered for years over what was considered a betrayal by their former ally. Marshal Philippe Pétain, who was appointed the prime minister of France on 16 June, severed diplomatic relations with the United Kingdom on 8 July.

One thing I rarely ever see mentioned, is the reason why the rescue at Dunkirk was such a resounding success for Britain. It could’ve easily ended in a bloodbath and a complete failure. Shortly before the Raid on Dunkirk, Hitler personally ordered the Wehrmacht to stop and take a break for a few days. The Invasion of France was going ‘too well’ in Hitler’s eyes as he heavily suspected an Allied Trap. This eventually turned out to be unfounded, but by the time he had realized this, it was already to late. British Troops were already in the midst of evacuating, when the German Army finally arrived. Many Historians called this Hitlers first and greatest Mistake. It is believed that without this short mandatory break, Britain’s Army in France would’ve been annihilated, Churchill probably forced to resign and his successor would’ve had to make peace with Germany. Britain had its best troops in France and would they have been wiped out, there would have been little chance to survive a land invasion. It is scary to think about how one little mistake may have completely changed the war and if Hitler listened to his Generals (who basically all opposed this break) History could’ve been completely different and the Third Reich could’ve won the War…

I’m happy that you’ve chosen to react to Oversimplified and look forward to more reactions to his videos. Regarding Churchill, my opinion of the man is that he was every bit as crazy, murderous and racist as Hitler...which made him the perfect man to lead Britain against him. Churchill’s decisions during the war, such as attacking the French Navy, re-routing food supplies from Bengal and making false promises to Eastern European nations, can all be argued to have been morally terrible but necessary actions to Ensure Britain’s survival. He did what he felt he needed to. Still, I find it highly amusing that he was fired not long after the war ended. I love Churchill as a historical figure and would gladly watch a TV series of him that is honest and upfront about the sort of person he was. Apparently the guy genuinely enjoyed being a soldier in WW1. Like I said; crazy.

Fun fact: The Altmark incident is the incident where British sailor on Destroyer Cossack became Thomas Cochraine. Cossack's crew change to German colours and get close enough to the Altmark to board the ship it self and liberated 300 British POWs and the POWs' First impression by the Cossack's is "THE NAVY'S HERE!!!" Battlecry and this make the German invaded Norway because they let the Cossack go in to the Fjords where the Altmark is hiding. And the first hour of the invasion 1 German Advance Heavy Cruiser sunk because of the century old fortress in Oslofjord and it's the scene in the movie The King's Choice this made the German postpone and adjust the plan to invade Norway and missed out the Nordic Royal Family with the nation's gold reserves. And earlier in the war the German Advance Battleship Bismarck got spotted by a Norway's Seaplane Tender and let the British to chase Bismarck and The Hood got destroyed and became a British's Pearl Harbor and Bismarck got rekt by the entire Royal Navy available at the times.

Dunkirk is a bad movie, since it does not even mention the sacrifice of 50k french soldiers in Lille and Dunkirk to give time for the brit to flee. We don't even see french soldiers in this """historical""" movie. I find it quite hypocritical since the brit never fought in dunkirk because, as the british general Alexander himself said to the french general Fagalde, "my soldiers are tired" (even if they basicaly never fought the german in France and passed their time fleeing from the front line). Churchill admitted that the epic resistance of the french division in Lille commanded by general Molinié, fighting and sacrifying themselfs 20k french soldiers against 150k germans, saved 180k british soldiers. Knowing that they wanted to rescue 20k soldiers, at most, at the start of the operation I think Nolan could have given some credit to the french army in his movie.

@@lafaucheuse2001 Several things. Rewriting history would be if the Germans broke through and captured the soldiers trapped on the beaches. Or say, have the American airforce appear to save the evacuation. The movie leaves out events to keep the pace going and keep the runtime under more than several hours. You're talking out if your ass if you say the British never fought the Germans in France. Ironic considering you accuse the movie of rewriting history. No movie is completely historically accurate. Historical based movies will always take liberties. There is a general consensus among movies critics and watchers that Dunkirk is brilliant in terms of score, cinematography, and many other categories.

I watched the end of the samurai videos by extra credits recently. New developments even gradual ones can cause major damage to certain cultures especially ones that have been experiencing total isolation from the rest of the world. Like just giving them guns horrified them with how outdated everything they were doing was and how their way of life was fundamentally flawed.

"Why can't people just be happy with what they've got" is a bit of a overstatement of the state of Italy's and Germany's economy post Great Depression

The Czech army was larger than Germany in terms of divisions. it was also vastly more mechanized, possibly the largest in the world at the time. The British and French air force was so small that they felt they had to give in to Germany's demands so they could buy time to build an Air Force. The Military commanders of both countries said maintain peace at any cost so they could build up. Chamberlain also famously said he would of had to work with the Soviets to stop the Nazis. Winston Churchill wanted Chamberlain to basically be a domestic Prime Ministers while he focus outside the country, but unfortunately he was sick and died. So he gets mocked here but is no where near the joke he is portrayed as. The respect Churchill gives him is the clearest example of this in my mind. The German army ran out of gas and had massive mechanical issues entering Austria. The news reels showed this powerful military, not the stalled tanks that had people hauling fuel from gas stations. If the French/British had a better intelligence network or diplomatic delegations to Austria they probably would of known and possibly made different choices. The German Army became vastly more mechanized because of being given Czechoslovakia. It gets called a mechanized force but less than 10% of it was when it invaded the Soviets. More than 90% was on foot or supplied by horses, not mechanical. The Maginot Line also extended to the coast. It was not as heavily defended but it existed so the idea the French had not prepared is just false. It was the vast movement of troops into Belgium to try to stop and the Germans, and the fleeing civilians that did more to jam cause a breakdown of the defense. And a few incompetent French Commanders. One general in charge of the Ardennes was given the option to have the entire french Air Force at his command as the Germans started their push. He refused to use it at first under the belief he didn't need it, so commanders in other sections made use of it. His superiors had seen the thrust coming, and moved to counter but he didn't make use of the air force or reinforcements before it was too late. If you want a modern example to justify military build up and spies as a means towards peace, the 1930s have some very good examples.
