Do you have any idea how good these men would feel? They endure months of heat, boredom, discomfort, fear, confusion, frustration and near death in some faraway part of the world, take a 12 hour flight with their brains muddled and aching back home, and there they are: the crisp cold air of their home, the clack of cobbles, the bright sun in their eyes, the cheers of their countrymen. It's hard to describe to anyone who hasn't served, but being welcomed home in such a way can bring a man to tears.

The guy isn't wrong when he says that overall the Scottish weren't all that exceptional in warfare, they did however stand out which might be what makes them more memeorable. Also in the thin red line at Balaclava the russians were outnumbered cavalry charging into bayonets and rifles

I recently took a pilgrimage to Scotland to honour my grandparents who lived near Aberdeen. The Miltary Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle brought me to tears. Hundreds of pipers and drummers playing "Scotland the Brave." A great country....so cold they invented wool sweaters, and scotch to keep warm.

The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland, were based at Howe Barracks for 10 years, and this was their farewell parade. What a magnificent sight, and one to stir the Scottish blood. The locals will miss them though and my thanks to them as a Scot for making them feel at home for all these years.

And the Borders were always in a mix of Scottish territory or English territory (as I understand Newcastle is a bit up North?) I know that Northumbria and Cumbria were Scottish territories until 14/15th Century... and that they have a big Scottish population, so maybe you have some Scottish heritage too!

I'm American. Served beside the RAF in the gulf (90's).My father was born in Birmingham and use to tell me he remembered seeing tanks and bombers flying over during WWII. Told me stories how the Scots use to march into battle with bag pipes playing and how it would frighten the enemy, back in the day. Ever since then I have loved to hear bagpipes and see them used in the military. There might be some in Great Britain that are divided, as in every country. ( #sorryabouttrump ) But just know, that you guys have each others backs and are so entwined, that you are stronger together. It was good to see the English react to the Scots, and it actually took me a second as an American to get that reaction. ( except that one lady as the pipes got there... she had shopping to do and didn't have time for no Scots bullshittery, lol) When the shit happens, you guys are all there together, and your goofy Cousins are right across the pond for you ( and we're bringing the Canadians with us, lol )

d1mitry01 There was a vast majority of Scots that emigrated to Ulster after the three failed Jacobite rebellions and Highland Clearances, yes you are correct there. However, there was still a majority of Irish that existed there. One could also argue that the Scots and Irish are one in the same; as far ethnic and cultural lines go. The old name for Ireland in Latin was Scotia Majoraea. Which translated to Greater Scotland; and the Latin name for Scotland translates into Lesser Scotland; Scotia Minoraea. We are essentially all Gaels who branched off into different Christian sects; that’s the only difference. However, if one goes to Dundee or Forfar or areas around there then what I have suggested - and from observation I can confirm - that the people who inhabited that area were probably the last vestiges of the Pictish culture who spoke a Brythonic language, and were more closely resembling the Welsh/Briton tribes. We don’t know the ethnic lineage of the Picts. Ethnically, we are essentially all the same. Furthermore, if we look closely at English ethnic and genetic makeup they resemble very closely the Welsh’s; however, they are far more distinct ethnically from Northern Germans than the Welsh. This implies that the ‘English’ simply took on the culture of the invading Jutes, Angles, Saxons, Norse and Normans but these groups of invaders did not make a lasting genetic or ethnic impact upon the Britons in that area - or modern English. It’s very interesting but essentially these facts prove the ‘British’ (People inhabiting the areas of the British Isles) have been largely genetically homogenous for around 2000-3000 years approximately, but possibly longer. A small addendum is needed, in areas in the South of England such as Canterbury and Dover, additionally the area of Anglia to lesser degrees, have a lot of Frisian (Dutch) admixture. Historical analyses seems to indicate this fact as being the cause; the Brythonic Iceni (Ancient people who inhabited modern day Anglia) and other tribes in that area witnessed migrations, raids and some failed invasions by Frisians (ancient Dutch). With the close geographical proximity it is no surprise these cultural and ethnic exchange took place. So, that explains that small anomalous ethnic lineage of those peoples.

It is part of the honour bestowed by a city's governing body, represented typically by the mayor, upon a military unit - Army, Navy or Air Force - (in this case the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 5th Battalion the Royal Regiment of Scotland) when they are granted Freedom of the City, which includes the right to parade, drums beating, flags flying, and bayonets fixed. In some parts of the world, the "keys" to the city are an equivalent honour which can be bestowed upon a citizen, groups, or military units. This video shows the march...a sad day for the battalion and Canterbury when the military reorganized its deployment. On the plus side, quite a few pints were shared in friendship.

When the clansmen joined the British army in the eighteenth century they were allowed to wear their tartan again as many of the Scottish regiments were entire clansmen raised by their Chiefs: Cameron and Gordon to name a few.
