Inspiring. So glad to hear that the Corps are being allowed to regain the essential Commando ethos. A couple of comments of warning, I’m afraid - words are cheap; politicians are bred to nod in agreement to a principle and then fail to resource correctly. A small example, why are are men, putting their lives on the line, having to buy their own kit? Compare to the US Marine Corps - best kit available? You will get it. - surely, even politicians might know have worked that America, as a political establishment, could not give two figs about NATO, the UK - or anything outside the 52 states. Don’t rely upon; use them as they use us. The US Marine Corp are a very fine Corps - worthy allies of THE Corps - but deserve better than the US politicians.

50 States Outside of the US, its an easy mistake to make (and is sometimes even taught in school) that US protectorates are sometimes mistakenly lumped in with US states. (Like US Virgin islands, Guam, are sometimes mistakenly taught to be US states.)

@@chrisburke624 I have to agree. I worked with many fine Americans in Texas, Illinois and Michigan particularly whose knowledge of the world outside the US was very ……hazy. Part of that is, no doubt, down the sheer size of the US itself. However, I am astounded when I watch UK TV programmes in which people are asked, for instance, to pinpoint Mount Rushmore and you see answers from South Carolina to New Mexico to California; then you see the same people putting the birthplace of Strauss in France, Italy or Romania.

What about this Operation Frankton was a commando raid on ships in the German occupied French port of Bordeaux in southwest France during the Second World War. The raid was carried out by a small unit of Royal Marines known as the Royal Marines Boom Patrol Detachment (RMBPD), part of Combined Operations inserted by HMS Tuna captained by Lieutenant-Commander Dick Raikes who, earlier, had been awarded the DSO for operations while in command of the submarine HMS Seawolf (47S). (The RMBPD would later form the Special Boat Service). That will take so beating.

The Royal Marines are transforming, and have been for a few years now, quite aggressively to succeed at small unit operations. They have rekitted with different operational uniforms, and have even replaced the SA80 family with the C8 family of rifles. Being 'special operations capable' but mostly operating in the gray space will allow them to do very well conventionally, but also so very well as a Tier 2 SOF organization. (Tier 2 isn't worse than Tier 1, a lot of people don't understand that. Tier 1 and Tier 2 bring different capabilities with them, and focus on different mission sets. Broadly they can overlap, but each brings some specialist capabilities to respond to different specific tasks)

Pathfinders are one small platoon, there is no comparison.

As far as I know, if one has an ambition to become a Royal Marine Commando you`d normally apply to join The Royal Navy ( not The British Army ) or The R` M Commandos directly. The RMC`s are a part of The British Royal Navy. If one wishes to become a member of a special force attached to The British Army ( essentially The Special Air Service ) one would first join and serve two or three years in our Regular Army. After which time you may be able to apply to join The SAS. In short, joining The British Army is a long way of going about getting to be a British Royal Marine Commando.
